Hell yeah, I did notice… They have tons of shit… I do worry about ordering online because I’m not exactly doing this (sshhhh!)
Kelp4less is also a good spot like that.

I bought from kelp decent good for a small buy. But for big buys custom beats em.
Oly’s fish compost, all of buildasoils composts, all black owl stuff, buffaloam, Charlie’s chicken compost. Those are a few I know of off hand that are soil food web driven or approved.
Thanks Dave…
Nothing beats fresh compost tho. If you can’t source compost locally and don’t have room to do it outdoors, just get a 20-30 gallon tote fill it with your soil mix about half way and toss in worms. You can topdress it ever week or so like your plants and have a nice fresh source of worm compost you can use to make teas or extracts.
I’m more partial to extract than teas. You just can’t grow populations of nematodes, protozoa, fungal hyphae with teas, but bacteria will be booming.
I agree with @DavesNotHere on municipal compost yards they are just trash diverts for the most part IMO kinda of sad in a way who the hell knows how it was taken care of in the whole composting process probably more detrimental to your gardens after then when it went in before! Make your OWN! is my mantra!
Watch some Elaine Ingham videos on youtube on making compost and the soil food web. They are invaluable.
Great idea but would like to make a suggestion about the container for the worm bins use like a 25 gallon smart pot for your bin probably about the same price but will be much better air is important in the bin for raising worms and having them multiple like mad!
Thanks for all the help guys, I’m going to be upgrading my worm bin soon and I will definitely implement the suggestions given…
I don’t know if I’ve seen any of Elaine’s videos @DavesNotHere but I’ve watched a lot of that dude John soandso from growingyourgreens.com and have learned a lot of things from him about outfit no till.
Also I have a small compost pile going now but I’m moving in October to a more rural area where I can source more nettles and such…
I think what I will do is get my bases locally except for the compost. I’ll have to order that and done other amendments and/or pre mixed ‘fertilizers’
I’ve watched a bunch of his vids, he’s pretty knowledgeable. You don’t have to use nettle and other biodynamic things. My main compost pile is mainly leaf compost and it works out great.
Now there’s a guy that can turn a 10 minute conversation into 1.5 hour show Bla, bla bla get to the point John! LOL
Right… I mean my majority would be leafs… I’ve just noticed that the town I’m moving to has nettles growing all over…
I wasn’t here last autumn so I couldn’t collect the leaves… But I found what I could and mixed with some fresh grass and some broken down grass from an very old pile in the alley. I also added some different weeds. Plus maybe a gallon of really old soil from seedlings that came from a nursery that never got planted, again sitting in the alley… I’ve turned it a few times and missed the timing… Saw some ash in the middle but it wasn’t hot anymore at that point because we had a few days of rain… So I added some more green material and mixed it in… Hopefully it’ll be done before I move… If not it’s coming along… Lol
Haha, you’re defit3rigjt about that… The episode where he juices some fresh bud with coconut oil and I think orange juice… Somehow the thc became decarboxilated and he got high af?
The above reference to ash is actually a bacteria actinomycetes it forms masses of white filaments that grows like a fungus in compost piles it a good sign that things are being broke down it’s the bacteria that gives compost its nice earthy smells. If ya can check temps just make sure it doesn’t get over 160 degrees. Congrats sounds like your on the way of making compost there!
Oh, that’s awesome… I haven’t checked on it since then to be honest, that was a week ago. But I spread those actinomyetes all through the pile when I turned it… If I remember I’ll check on it after work today… All said and done the may be slow to break down because it is so small…
Hey I searched for black owl compost but all I’m finding is biochar?
You’re right. I was thinking they had worm castings too, but I was wrong.
@oranje reminded me about Coast of Maine soils and amendments with his latest journal update. I recommend checking out both the products and his thread lol.
I
Compost is always breaking down even when temps are cooler you have your thermaphilic at high, mesophilic at mid temps or so and psychrophlic bacteria at the lowest temps after that you have critters come in your pile shredders and grinders (pillbugs, springtails, earthworms, and on and on) fungi can also visit breaking down lignin in you woody items, it’s quite an amazing process when all said and done you have natures most perfectly balanced soil additive!
Just keep you pile about 50% moisture and things will keep chugging along!
I forgot all about them too… Smh…
