Hiya, OG!
Light up if you got ‘em, this post is longer than I planned.
Made some big changes recently to my grow space, or at least big for me.
Still using the 2x4 “Tuba Fort” tent. I added shelves with T5 lights so that I have a reliable space for clones & seedlings. Shelves take up 1/4 of the floor space, leaving a 2x3ft area to host the veg plants. Plans are in the works to acquire a second tent which will be the flowering area.
Now it looks like this:
I had to adjust the length of my grow light in order to fit everything. The VIPARSPECTRA XS2500 is just a tad over 3’ long. To make it smaller I shortened the bars as far as they go - almost ran out of space to plug the power cords back in!
These screws are holding everything tightly in place.
The cords just barely plug back in at this length.
The only concern is that this will adjust the PAR values especially near the center between the lights. With the two lights closer together the PAR is going to be higher in the middle. Raising the light has helped to keep anything from getting light burn (ran it too strong awhile back and learned another lesson).
Here under the domes I have cuttings from @JohnnyPotseed. Started with 8 different strains, 3 snips of each.
Honestly, I have learned some more big lessons in handling these snip. Mostly I learned a ton of different ways to kill clones!
BIG MAJOR LESSON: If someone sends unrooted snips that are wrapped in damp paper towels, make sure to get those snips planted ASAP!
I made the mistake of keeping the cuttings in the fridge for 1-2 weeks after they arrived. It might have been okay except for all the excess moisture. Because of this I’ve wound up losing a little over half of these Mostly to damping off, and one had visible white mold growing on a leaf. Major, major lesson learned here. Procrastination once again bit my ass big time.
Literally all of these snips have required heavy maintenance. All of them have needed leaves cut off in unhealthy spots. Some have had stems snap after a day in the plugs. I’ve held on to a few for longer than most people would because it’s a learning experience for me. But there have been some that I’ve been quick to toss out with no hesitation.
The good news! A few have taken root in under 2 weeks. And some of the unhealthiest looking clones have bounced back.
Grape Pupil (left) this was the first to show any roots. Fruity Pebbles (right) is also showing small roots. Both of these will go into solo cups later tonight.
White Rhino - also showing roots! It’s doing a lot better than this picture implies.
Vortex - the only strain with all 3 snips remaining. I’m worried that I fucked up. Tried to lift them out of the tray to check for roots in the plugs, and one of them popped right out leaving the plug in the tray. Pretty sure I snapped the stem off of whatever roots may have started growing (none visible from outside of the plug). Keeping a close eye on these.
Blue Dream - the only strain with 2 snips remaining. Worried that these are damping off. The one on the left’s stem is starting to feel weak.
Alien OG, this one received a heavy trimming. Started off with lots of yellow and spotty leaves that were damp. I’ll be really upset with myself if I lose this one. It’s one of my favorite strains in my state med program (sold as “Blueberry Cheesecake”). I’ll be thrilled if I can grow my own. Luckily this little gal has some resistance when I try to wiggle it in the peat plug - I keep telling myself that means there are teeny tiny baby roots forming!
Grandaddy Purple - this lonely snip keeps going back and forth between “might not make it” and “looks kinda healthy.” It’s needed a heavy trim to remove some bad spots.
Air Force One - no pics for this one. Had one snip make it for a week before the stem just folded in half, completely wet and hollow. I lost all three snips for this strain
Which is a damn shame, for a few reasons. This is the one I was most looking forward to trying. But also, I know that there were other OGers who wanted to get some of this before JP ran out. Now I feel as though I stopped someone from being able to enjoy this strain. It’s honestly made me feel ashamed and is part of the reason I haven’t updated sooner.
I ordered a bottle of Southern Ag “Garden Friendly Fungicide” to help with damping off issues going forward. It should be here today. This is a less expensive alternative to Botanicare Hydroguard, same main ingredient (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens).
Now, on to better news!
My remaining Lemon G and Cayo Hueso clones from @Papalag are kicking ass!
Lemon G are the two short ones in the solo cups. The other three are all Cayo (one solo cup, two in small grow bags in styrofoam cups).
The two short Cayos in the styrofoam cups have had some training done on their stems. At first this was just my impatience and wanting to practice LST. It turned out to be useful, I was able to set the cups on the bottom shelf and have the plants angle out to be under the main grow light.
Both the Cayos in the small cups were moved up to solo cups last night. The plants all pictured in solo cups are ready to move up as well.
If you look closely you may notice… the three pictured in red solo cups all had their tops cut off! The top snips all went under the dome to hopefully make more clones. I also snipped from the lowest node on the Cayo (top right corner of the six-cell tray) but that one didn’t make it as of this morning.
All six of my vegging plants received training, too. Topped five of them, and the sixth is my first ever attempt at supercropping.
Gran Champagne #3, supercropped
And a few days later (view from opposite angle)
Frankenstein has responded the best to LST out of all my plants. She’s starting to give off a good stink!
Gran Cham #2, topped. This girl is the bushiest plant in my garden.
Below is a full garden shot, as of this morning. Ignore the yellowing lower leaves I was late to feed them and they all got super droopy for a day.
All of these are ready to move up a pot. I’ve got lots of work to do over this weekend!
That’s quite a lot for now. Happy growing, OG!
