How can I prevent fluffy buds

My first plant, unknown CBD strain, CFL lighting for first half of grow (sprouted Aug. 6) and replaced with 600W HPS in mid september. In the 6th week of flower with 12/12 light and the buds are still light and fluffy. What am I doing wrong?

well, there are many many factors that can attribute to fluffy buds, it is a general sign of weak productivity, it can be the strain, heat, cold, bad medium feeding problems ph light leaks and what else… try many strains and work on improving everything, the more you give the more you get

I would mix a 1/4 teaspoon of Epson Salt to 1 gallon of water. This should green them up some so we can get a better look at the problem.

Did the plant get to close to the light in the past 3 weeks.

The light was about 36" from the plants but my son said that was to far away and I moved them to about 18" away. The light is air cooled and produces next to no heat in the tent. My tap water is PH 7-8, hard to tell with liquid test and the runoff water after watering with straight water is PH4. Would that be normal? The salts would be to help with oxygenation in the soil?

Epson Salts will fix cal/mag problems. What kind of medium are your plants growing in.

I am not sure if you have a lock out issue or not. If you run the Epson Salts a few times it can fix a lot of problems.

You do need to flush the meduim out a few times and we will see what to do next.

Epsom salt is Magnesium Sulfate, it can fix magnesium deficiencies effectively and provides sulfur as well, it has no calcium though

Cool, that’s exactly what I used to love about OG . and as this proves love again … I learned something!!! I knew the mag def and the mag fix I knew it could be a result of genetics … I have grown bag seed that produced buds harder than a quarterback on promnight outside, but fluffy and low producing, fluffy light flowers in an indoor low to moderate lit grow and from heat issues I guess’ but I never associated light leaks with much more than stress and often hermi-osity, is that a word …? wasn’t… it is now because it on the interweb.!.. … but it makes sense bought the leaks… imagine she is attempting to enter re-vege and then self seed in larger numbers of beans to do her duty to save her species if calamity is likely ??

What about other plants in same cabinet, @rongo? Is it the only one exhibiting this stress? Looks very stressed to me and maybe with slight deficiency / pH problem (light green or yellowing leaves).

In general nature of buds (fluffy or packed) is a matter of genetics, but in this case I’d say some stress added to it.

I’m only brainstorming now… This stress could be caused by (as guys already mentioned) light leaks, fertilizer pH lock off, or maybe overdose of some booster/hormones? What are you using to fertilize?

It is definitely better to use digital pH tester and aim for 5.2 - 5.8.

The plant is in order. I recommend harvest.

I have 2 Green Crack clones in with it and they are doing great, the buds are not real big but they are hard and covered in crystal. There are no light leaks. My tap water is PH 7.5-8 and the runoff water from the bottom of the pot is PH4 or less according to my chart. She is growing in Pro Mix potting soild with some vermiculite and pearlite mixed in. I have been using General Hydroponics Flors Series ferts, mixed at full recommended strength and alternated with plain water. I have been watering twice a week, once with ferts and once just water.

soil, Pro Mix potting soil with verviculite and pearlite in a 3 gallon pot.

I flushed the soil with a couple gallons of water and runoff water went from brown to practically clear.

Update. She looks no better but no worse. Fingers crossed. Noticed I had bumped the tent somehow and pushed it against the heat register. Moved the tent away again so there was an air barrier between the tent and the vent again. Possible one sided heat issue that I can’t measure.

Read up on GH 0-6-9 formula. I have used it in pro mix. There is years of grow information on the net about this formula.

If it is the only problematic clone and different genetics than the others it is probably due to some stress that happened before you planted it (or unstable genetics).

If other clones are doing well under same circumstances there is probably nothing wrong with your technique.

My that on subject is… Looks like it sneaking back in to veg… Or its a temperature issue hope you find the problem… \m/ grow on

A buddy sent me some CBD seeds about 3 years ago. Three strains and some bud samples from two of them. One was really light and airy too.

I’m growing 2 of those strains now and one has yellow blotches on it’s new leaves as they grow out. The yellow tends to go more greenish after a while but can still be seen later.

The plant on the right is the one I’m tallking about. It’s an OTTO#1. Supposed to be no more than 1%THC and anywhere from 10 - 27% CBD so not your average stoner pot.

The two on the left are a cross of the Otto and Cannatonic he named GoldFish. It’s a good toke with nice hard nugs. Fairly high in THC as it gets me ripped even after 3 years sitting in my desk drawer. They look totally normal compared to the Otto with it’s spidery leaves. I had two males from my first sprouting of the Ottos and only got this one plant with the last 3 seeds so praying it’s a girl. I saved pollen from both the males to breed with.

Took a fresh picture a few min ago of the Otto so you can better see the yellowing. They all get the same feed and water in the same soil mix so I’m certain it’s a genetic quirk and not a deficiency of any kind. I think it’s kinda cool and if it turns out to be a boy I’ll collect pollen and breed it with some other plants I have going. I’d like a CBD version of an auto I’m breeding and another strain called LoneStar Blue Heaven another buddy made years back between L.S.D. and BlueBerry. It’s a fast finisher with a great yield and the kind of buzz this old head needs.

I am no expert, but to my eyes that sure looks like its foxtailing. Either from heat, or light leakage.

Hey @LabRat, was there any progress on the plants? Is the growth stunted?
