Incense cones from sugar leaf

Hi OG’ers!

I’ve just got done making a few cannabis incense cones. I’ve yet to conclude on their burning cause they’re in the drying process. I thought I’d share the process on making these incense cones in case anyone is into hotboxing, or a good Shiva worshipping.

What you’ll need:
-mortal and pestle
-powdered wood (palo santo is what I used, but there are quite a few other woods that can be used as well)
-a little bit of charcoal (you can used activated charcoal powder, or the bottom powdery bits of a BBQ bag of charcoal, which is what I happened to have on hand)
-some dried popcorn buds or quality sugar leaf
-some herbs of your choice (I chose cloves, cinnamon and rosemary)
-a bit of resin of your choice (I chose Styrax benzoin and a copal variety)
-a tiny bit of xanthan or guar gum as a binder
-a tiny bit of water (preferably demineralized but it’ll probably work with regular tap as well)
-a conical mold (I used the spout of a decorating/piping bag)
-something to poke the cone back out of the mold
(-a skewer, pin or metal nail) (This is to create a backflow effect which I wanted (and how I first named this thread) but somehow it doesn’t actually work. Online you can find nothing but accounts of how pinning the bottom will make it backflow, but in my experience, it just won’t backflow. It’ll keep flowing up and up and I’m kinda left wondering what the hell is put into these backflow cones to make the smoke drop instead of rise. In case anyone has the answer, please let me know!)

How to go about it:
First you will need to weigh off your bud. I started out with 5g of sugar leaf. I planned to divide this into however many cones it made but was hoping on getting it in 2 or 3. Very thoroughly grind the leaf or popcorn bud into a fine powder in the mortar and pestle. Do the same for the other herbs you plan to incorporate. The resins, if hard to powder due to stickyness, can be frozen, which makes powdering a whole lot easier. When everything is powdered, mix the ingredients together in the mortar and pestle along with 1/6th of a teaspoon of the xanthan or guar gum, 3 teaspoons of charcoal dust and 1 teaspoon of wood dust and give it a final torough mortar and pestle run to really mash the smells together.

Now you add a little bit of water at a time until it forms a dryish paste that can then be packed tightly in the mold. When the mold is filled, check if the top can have some more compression and fill up more if needed. When it’s nice and filled up, insert the skewer through the middle from the bottom all the way till you can feel it at the top, twist it a bit and remove, then carefully poke out the cone from the mold and finish it up carefully with your fingers. Place on a piece of paper in a warm place for 3 to 4 days to dry out completely before using. (the skewer poking was thought to create backflow effect but alas, despite the internet being assuring it would work, such a feat was not accomplished)

When using, light the top, place in a fire proof cup or incense burner inside a confined space. Put on some music, read a good book, enjoy your coffee, and get softly baked like a moelleux cake.

Update:

I’m sitting in my small bathroom while it’s nicely filled up from the smallest cone I had. I’m not feeling high yet. As I am typing it has just finished burning. Before entering the bathroom with the unburned cone I was definitely feeling like a bonghit. That was actually my cue for the test. Right now I feel like a bonghit could be nice, but if I would have to quantify my longing for a bong before and now I would absolutely have to say I long for it a lot less now. I am starting to feel the effects in that it is calming and there’s a certain contemplative state/mood taking hold of me. I’d say this smallest cone (about 1/3rd of the size I used for the big ones, but the room is a lot smaller than the average room as well) is a nice size for people with little tolerance to get high enough for an enjoyable but not overpowering state.

I would reckon 1 big cone to leave me high in this small room, though I am in doubt if 1 large (1.5g worth of sugar leaf) cone would do me much in a larger room.

If I would have more time today I might have burned a bigger one right after the first small one because it definitely brings about an enjoyable atmosphere. Alas, my chickens need feeding, my compost heap needs to be built, and my kid needs to get picked up from school.

I think these would be most interesting to burn during congregations of likeminded people to encourage openness, discussion and philosophic thought.

Sitting in this room for some time now, I feel it’s time for a breather and some outdoor work, as this room is now a bit smokey. I could imagine people with low tolerance or ppl naive to cannabis finding this experience to be a bit too strong, but on the other, I find it is slower to come up and less triggering for anxiety than vaping or smoking weed straight would be. There’s of course no guarantuee that this extends to other poeple as well, so I would like to encourage anyone who tries this to share their experiences.

Thank you for your attention, and enjoy!

Talk about a cool idea. I’d never have thot of it. Hey got any pix of the cones, or one burning even? And you could also make non backflow cones too, right? Can you stand over a cone and get high? Thanks.

Well considering there’s about 1.5g of sugar leaf in each cone, I’d say sitting in a small room with one should get a person high. That’s kind of the idea

Non-backflow cones are possible but for the effort of poking a skewer through it I thought I’d make em backflow style. Plus with the hole supposedly bigger diameter cones work better. I will report back when I’ve burned one but it won’t be for today. I think I’ll manage to do one before Friday though.

I think smaller versions of these would probably be great for people that can’t take too much weed. Maybe with half a g if you’re really sensitive.

Standard or larger size is probably great stuff as a general atmosphere enhancer for groups of people naive to pot or entry level users.

I doubt it’ll get me stoned to the bone but that’s not always needed.

Probably super duper as a gaseous aphrodisiac bedroom veil.

I could put a cone in a pipe, LMMMAO. Still it’s a great idea, unless you don’t want your house smelling like a opium den. I try to do everything i can to keep cannabis smell down, because of the social stigma of using a schedule one narcotic, don’cha know.

Yeah, I get that, and I’m a lil precautious as to when I’m gonna do that first test burn cause my wife doesn’t like me smoking in the house, so I don’t normally hotbox any rooms or anything. Gonna be interesting to note how long it takes for the smell to dissipate

I updated the OP with a review, and changed the title to remove the backflow since that did not work. I would like to know how to make them backflow if it is possible, but poking a hole down the bottom is not the way to do it, apparently. They did backflow when held upside down, but the smoke still went up though the hole, it never flowed down like a backflow cone should.

Perhaps Makko is an ingredient that may help it flow down, as makko powder is used a lot in incense, though I did not have it on hand so I did not incorporate any in my recipe.

If anyone here has experience with makko or making their own incense, please do chime in!

Why is it that you’re looking for the backflow effect? According to this incense specialist, they don’t provide the same quality scent, experience - either way, here is his video speaking on the subject for your reference:
