Is this a good source of nitrogen

Would these moths and such be of any use for fermenting or anything else

I just put this bucket up yesterday just to see. and already got quite a bit. I guess insect frass would be poop from insects just wasn’t sure if moths and such have chitin or anything beneficial for plants

Actually I found a site that gives a little info on the subject

Looks like a good source of nitrogen if nothing else

I know little about insect fermentation but I wouldn’t put too much faith in that article

I’m not a miracle grow hater but these affiliate links are suspect.

Ya but I wasn’t commenting on the miracle grow. I know web sites have ads, but they are not trying to sell dead bugs. That would maybe send red flags, but finding this type of info is difficult

Looks like I’ll have to do some experimenting haha. It just seems that if dead bugs are free nutrients why not use them.

Main benefits of insects and their poo is the chitin and microbes that makes the plants feel they are under attack and ups their immune systems without actually attacking the plants so if an invasion appears plants will have a solid defense for it. U can easily dry and blend em up and add it but ur main benefit from it isn’t gonna be the npk content but rather the metaphorical shield ur putting on your plant

That is also what I was wondering. Thank you for chiming in.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it won’t provide any nutrition, just not enough it will make a noticeable difference. If the npk is 3-2-2 which is pretty typical of bug excrement that means in 100 lbs of bugs only 3% or 3lbs is gonna be nitrogen, now take the weight of that pile of moths and ur prob less than an Oz, u have such a trace amount there that plant will hardly notice it but is still decomposing matter that returns to the circle of life

We have cockroaches everywhere in az (outside). Especially right now. Haven’t really figured a good way to trap them and I definitely don’t want to breed them but are different bugs better for metaphorical shields or are they all the same?

I’ve noticed some too this year but in the same boat as u not sure how to snatch them and their poo, I personally use a mix of roach cricket and mealworm since those are the main ones in the scene for gardening and try to keep my microbes diverse, haven’t messed with solder fly poo though

Now if that bucket of moths was in my hands, I’d be throwing into my next tea bag for a compost tea, don’t matter if they are wet or dry like that;)
