Leggy seedlings

My seedlings are very leggy, I have repotted tomato seedlings before and just added more dirt to the new pot burying the extra stem …. But unsure if this is acceptable with cannabis?

Yeah you can do the same thing. Low light / far red I think can cause stretching. I had some seedlings recently under some cheap “blurple” led and even though the light was like 6 inches away they still stretched like they were in the shade.

I’ve noticed lower light levels causing really big fan leaves too.

Excellent thank you…. Is it better to do it sooner than later?

you can do it now. bury about half the stem, and give them a little more light

For future reference!
Fill your pot/cup about 1/2 to 3/4 full so when your seedling stretches you can just fill the cup up the rest of the way …
Also lighting deff plays a factor !
Most seedings have some sort of stretch in the beginning till they find a comfortable height
A small fan gently blowing across them can also improve stem strength

Yes it’s acceptable. When I get leggy seedlings I just up pot and bury them a little deeper. That said they likely needed more light so if you can get that tuned in it will be a non issue.

I’m just starting them in a southern window, waiting for my greenhouse to stabilize, then they are going outside. And of course as soon as they popped we are having a cloudy stretch :rage:

Was curious about putting then in a bigger cup closer to bottom then add dirt. But then started wondering about the roots being so close to the bottom of the cup. Even if it’s just short term

I agree with Doug, burying is fine but you’ll really have stronger seedlings if you can get them started under strong enough light that they don’t stretch. This is a seedling sprouted under a 100w LED light that was about 12 inches above the cups. This is what I aim for my seedlings to look like.

I guess next round I’ll have to set up an actual light … last year the window worked good :man_shrugging:t2:lol

To keep this from happening… be sure the light is close enough, and there is enough airflow for the seedlings to slightly ‘jiggle’…it strengthens the stems…
If stretchy, I just support them inside a piece of soda straw- and let them outgrow it.
But again, enough light and airflow are a must!

I prefer not to bury the stems, in case of dampening off…

Just plain white LED or does it Ned to be a certain spectrum?

The one in the picture is just white but I’ve done the same with blurple LEDs and they do just as well. It’s really the light intensity that matters. Making sure they have enough, seedlings can take a lot of light. In the summer I sprout them in the direct sun

Some will stretch no matter what, to me it’s simply a sign of vigor.
Adding dirt is fine, some cultivars even start growing root stumps on their stem above ground!
Make sure the dirt you add is on the dry side (to prevent fungus eating your sprouts, also called “damping off”), when you grab a handful of dirt and you make a fist, if only one drop of water comes out, that’s perfect!
Less is fine in this case.

I put a tailed seed in a quarter filled 4" nursery pot, it grows up, I fill it up, right to the that cute little face. Then up she goes, and I back fill again.
Cannabis plant, roots almost every part of it, hell even fan leaf’s will root, to become old fan leafs.

Will probably up- pot in a week or so and after getting a nice bright light it seems they have calmed down a bit lol

Thanks for all the input everyone :grinning:
