Nice post, I was fortunate enough to have met Ed and Mel at the High Times cannabis cup in San Francisco 2012. Some cool old guys right there. :sunglasses:

Thanks to everyone for their appreciation, I appreciate all you as well for making a space here to catalog and discuss some of the endless and somewhat ephemeral history of cannabis and it’s acolytes like us. It’s Thanksgiving with my partners family at their house so I’ll be posting through the day as I escape to smoke outside and also dig through their big record collection and books to see what sort of hippie stuff I find, I’m expecting some good things to photograph.

To start the day here’s another internet find that’s unique! Especially for $20 as part of an edition of only 150:

The following are from completed EBay listings:

“The Ubiquitous Roach Clip: Wherein Is Set Down Briefly the Whole Matter of Its History, Utility and Beauty as Art Form and Artifact

Willeford, Charles

Notes: A single sheet folded to make four pages.

This is a short essay that Charles Willeford wrote in 1973 marveling at the rapid evolution of the roach clip (a device for holding a marijuana cigarette when it becomes too small for one’s fingers) from a folded match to an ornate piece of jewelry in less than 10 years.

Published in an edition of 150 copies signed by the publisher, Michael Kellner, with a matching envelope.

Edition + Condition: First separate edition or first edition. A fine copy.

Publication: [Santa Barbara, CA?]: Pride of Tacoma Press, 2003.

Item No: #306730

Price: $20”

That Cherniak & Dronkers book is available on EBay as signed brand new copies from a underground/radical distributor named Last Earth, they also have a lot of other interesting old cannabis books deadstock like Cannabis Alchemy by D. Gold or Doctor Atomic’s Cannabis Multiplier, an early hash oil guide reprinted:

Been meaning to reply since I saw your and other members earlier comments. The HASHISH book by Suomi LaValle is a classic. It’s the title that got me interested in collecting and I remember missing out on my first copy not knowing the market prices. It was in good condition and sold at a BUY NOW style listing on eBay for less than $150. I remember seeing the listing and telling myself to grab the bong and think it over as I’d never spent that sort of coin on a book before. By the time I convinced myself to get it I saw it had already sold! I was bummed but that whole situation propelled me to learn more about the book collecting world. Something I had not previously known much anything about.

In short time, I was able to find a copy of HASHISH at an even lower price than the one on eBay I “missed out on”. They tend to show up occasionally for around $100-$150 and at those prices they tend to get purchased rather quickly which would suggest that’s about where the current market price is for a nice copy.

I plan on scanning my entire collection and I have the Suomi LaValle title but I’m not sure how soon I’ll realistically get around to digitizing them. As @buckaroobonsai mentioned the Sinsemilla Marijuana Flowers magazine publication by Jim Richardson is full of beautiful photography in a vintage style. They seem to be going for around $25-50 lately and can go a bit more than than on occasion depending on availability.

The Laurence Cherniak books are fantastic too. There’s a thread on Icmag that I referenced in this topic about 100 comments back, I believe it’s the 598’th reply in this topic, High Grade - Vintage Cannabis photography. It’s full of wonderful antiquated pictures and references of their publications. There are some cool vintage pictures in some of the old cannabis themed calendars as well.

@Dirt_Wizard those are some awesome photography finds! Sweet vintage pictures.

There were some vintage 70’s or so pictures for sale on eBay a while back and a handful of them were cannabis. The photographs were very beautiful even the non cannabis photos and gave a sense of the heartfelt and intentional life the photographer lived. A bit of regret not purchasing those for myself but stoked for whoever got to add them to their collection. So to say the antiquated vintage cannabis stuff comes up for sale often enough that you shouldn’t feel rushed into overpaying but when stuff comes up at a good price it will probably sell pretty quickly. There’s also a more modern coffee table style book with wonderful pictures of the traditional hashish cultivation regions in Afghanistan. It’s titled Afghanistan: A Fortress of Cannabis. I forget the authors name Lucas something I think! It’s the closest to the HASHISH book by LaValle and I think it will be regarded as a classic in this genre of literature and publishing as well. Hope some of that’s helpful. Many blessings and much love

Another good photography option are the Indian Landrace Exchange books, whether in print or ebook (much cheaper!):
