Bufflehead Ducks stopping by for a few days on their way south.

Wood Ducks and Turtle

Kingfisher

Toms

Lately a large flock of Wood Ducks have been stopping by. Early morning and barely daylight, finds me tossing a large Folgers coffee container of 3/16" floating pellets for the hybrid bluegills. I have to announce to the ducks as they show up and before they can land in our pond, “Throwing out the fish food ducks”. They fly off but do not go too far. The perimeter of the pond is 640 feet and it takes me about 10 minutes to throw out all of the fish food as I walk the perimeter. A dozen or two at a time try to land before I’m finished throwing out the fish food. “Throwing out the fish food ducks” he said again and again.

Within a few minutes of going into the house after I’ve finished feeding the fish, they show up a dozen or two at a time. A few weeks ago it was a couple dozen of them. That number has steadily risen in the last few weeks, and now over 70 of them show up. In prior years, the most we had was a couple dozen.

The large number of them taking advantage of the free fish food handouts bodes well for next spring when they return from their southern haunts, and many may pair off and raise a brood in the adjoining 1 acre swamp/thicket right next to the pond. That is where the successfully mated pairs nest. I even put a couple of wood duck nesting boxes on 1 inch emt in about 3 feet of water in the swamp.

They will continue their stay getting ready for their migration. They even come up right next to the house and feed off the black oil sunflower seeds and chaff the the birds toss to the ground out of the bird feeders. Their filling up the gas tank for the long flight ahead. If I had to guess, I would say just over 50% to 60% of them are ducklings that were born last spring and now are almost as large as the adults. The rest are adults.

They usually migrate between the middle of October to the middle of November. It’s sad to see them leave, but that just makes their return next spring that much more enjoyable.
