It is all about the worm babies
Your plants will be thanking you muchly
Here’s hoping! Finally making the switch from salt nutes, worm bin seemed like a must
Source some greensand. Good for their gut, without tiny granules they cannot digest correctly. Then the greensand becomes available mag, and you will forget you ever knew the words cal mag
I don’t have indoor space for a worm bin… and Arizona summer in a plastic tub seems like a worm killer!
Anybody ever try vermicomposting outdoors in the desert?
Try it. Shade is your friend. Watering can, or tub nearby. Lots of pot leaves, and you are off and running. Bigger the better, imho, less extremes.
This was my main thought. The center should stay relatively cool.
I’ll toss it on the list, saw some of you fine folk using it. Currently have some ground up egg shell dust to start em off
Ol’ @Hillbill had a good saying that I won’t forget, “worms need grit, so Azomite and greensand is what they git.” I would also add eggshells to that rhyme, but it doesn’t quite work.
Follow up question: In the past I would put some food scraps in the bin, but I’ve heard of folks doing a slurry of blended scraps.
Preferences?
I like the smoothie with added amendments. More surface area to rot. Worms gone wild!
I started my worm bin in my office that was off the living room. If I can persuade my wife, and reassure her that there is no smell or additional critters, anyone can!
Also. This place is rad!! https://arizonawormfarm.com/
They have some great VC videos on YT.
Great stuff crunchy!
I’m a, ‘throw all the cannabis leaves in there’, kinda wormer. I figure, we feed the plant, bend it, love it, etc…then rip off all it’s leaves all full of nutrients, why not just recycle these:O. Full cycle worming. I do the same with my root balls. Feed them to the worms. Save a few pumkins from fall, and a nice round diet with eggs shells coffee grinds and avo.
Think ima check on my worms when I go down tonight. Thanks crunchy:)
That’s where I buy my castings, and yeah, they’re great!
I’ve made tons of " Worm smoothys " previously. Works fabulous
Can confirm, @Cadman got me making smoothys for them and boy do they multiply!
@Cartwright is running worm ‘Bunga Bunga’ parties under those chunks of pumpkin…
A couple more weeks (maybe) and it should be warm enough for me to start working on the 200L (50 gal) bin in the garage. The fastest way I’ve found for getting the population numbers up is items like pumpkins or melons etc.
Happy Vermicomposting 2023 everyone!
Cheers

Melon , cantaloupe , watermelon rind etc in moderation is the food source my worms seemed most interested in as well. In moderation only because of the water content.
Nothing beats some good fresh castings! Here is a layer of my finished product. Funny how we’ve all discovered our worms go nuts for melons!
