Let's see your worm bins!

I’ve been migrating them from one container to start up another…
Half an avocado is perfect, every time I lift it up, there’s a small ball (50?) of worms to grab.

Cheers

I have worms in all of my beds. I like to scoop out the avocado and mix it with dry amendments and put it back in the shell. Worms devour it so fast!

I rarely see my worms and imagine I starved them all to death long ago, but last month they decided to make an appearance.

@G-paS  any changes or periods of neglect? Temperature issues? It freezes?

You may have to manually sort the bin contents if there’s a problem but the food lure suggestions are all good easier ways to find them.

I recently had a fruit fly infestation in my bins & was going nuts dealing with them

Buildasoil’s Jeremy said a 1/2” layer of diatomaceous earth laid down for 48 hrs would do it… tried that but still had some pesky flies left. :confounded:

So next step was some ‘flying insect killer’ spray…all natural & safe though, essential oils like peppermint. That worked but I immediately removed the now reeking DE & spread it as top dressing on my seedlings. :+1:

I sacrificed a bedsheet to make a bug cover & tied it tight with twine, & am monitoring the situation but other than accidentally spraying a worm 🪱 wow worm emoji!!! Awesomeness
🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱

Also had a wave of mites attack the flies & maggots before I dealt the final solution to zem. Was fascinating & disgusting at the same time not schadenfreude but something I’m sure cousin Dieter has a word for.

Really need to peruse this thread. Got a pound of wigglers here waiting for a home. Wasn’t sure If I’d make a bin or just put these guys in a fabric bed and sow a cover crop and go no till or both. Open to ideas or suggestion with deploying this worm army.

A whole pound I’d start a bin.
That would be too many to throw in a no till pot IMO.
So many beneficials come from the worm bin other than just the castings. You get the juice(fulvic acid I believe) and all kinds of mites and nematodes etc.

Take like 10-20 put in the no till and start the farm with the rest… two birds

I agree with @BeagleZ ! A bin would continuously produce high quality castings and those worms will multiply, given the right conditions. Having a worm bin is one of the best gardening decisions I’ve made and it’s super fun!

Thanks @BeagleZ, I suspected a bin would be the best options. Gotta get on it this weekend! Also, thanks @CrunchBerries for the link. Got some reading to do. Not while I’m at work though. :innocent:

Well my daughter is going to start her worm farm project. I think we will just get her a premade worm tower or worm farm of some sort to start off with. Then once she gets the hang of things, we can step it up to making some large tote bins.

I will be helping as well, but she wanted to do it as a FFA project so she will have to dive in, get dirty and learn.

Hey all you worm wizards! Let’s get this thread going again! I’m currently walking a baby around in a bjorn, so I can’t really add too much to the conversation other than to just let y’all know that it would be cool to have a more active community of vermicomposters on here. If I didn’t tag someone make sure to spread the good word far and wide!!!

I’m gonna wiggle up in here and find something to eat while I keep an eye out. Starting a worm bin might be a good spring project.
