Light Leaks, does it hurt?

Ok so I’ve been thinking about this for a bit now and always tried to keep my tents closed up.
I’ve recently started using a room for my flower room and I have a leak under the door.
One of the plants in the grow ended up herming :man_facepalming: and seeded one of my other plants.
I feel like it may have been a light leak but could have been an issue with the seed and genetics and was a one off issue.

My thought is, does a bit of light leak hurt?
I mean outdoor growers never have full darkness, meaning the moon is shining most nights.
Or, am I thinking about it wrong because I’m controlling the light schedule and it just cannot mess it up.

Thanks in advance for the advice and thoughts :blush:

Ongoing light leaks are a known cause of hermaphrodism, yes.
As far as the “they don’t get total darkness outside” thought, the luminescence of the moon is so low that it didn’t make a difference, but if your plant is accidentally near a motion detector light… the plant will either never flower, or herm.

A little bit is fine.

This topic, I believe, has more complexities than are fully understood.

We run plants in an area that has a lots of light leaking onto the plants from birth to harvest. Primarily low intensity but with the occasional higher intensity short duration overhead lighting on the off cycle. We have not experienced herms growing this way across multiple cultivars over the course of many years.

I honestly don’t think it was enough to cause an issue but looking for others thoughts or actual evidence about the subject

My veg cabinet that I sometimes flower in is not even close to light tight. It’s pretty comical even.

Is that growing indoor or out?

I’m growing indoor so that is why I’m asking. Does it matter because I’m controlling the schedule as an exact schedule.
I mean that moon shines bright as heck :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I agree with all of these learned gentlemen

My room and tents all leak but it’s to what degree that matters ! i’m always in and out of my room during light out

I fine genetics is more of an issue and poor breeding

As long as you can’t read a book by it it should be fine

I had herms (indoor) which was caused by a light “leaking” from an extension cable running the fans that had a little orange lit on off button on it.

This was my thought

If light leaks are stressful enough to trigger herms, there may be correlation to the growth environment and lighting intensity during the on period.

Running under lower intensity lighting throughout the lifecycle may mean that plant is also more sensitive to light input in general. The plant develops additional photoreceptors to capture additional light. Perhaps the plant becomes sensitive enough to lighting intensity that upsets the balance of r / fr down conversion … which signals short day -v- long day.

Supplemental greenhouse. E.g. moonlight, overhead lighting, wife, etc. You can see fine during the off-cycle in there. E.g. can’t really see colors so much unless the overhead lights are on.

FYI, I think bugbee has a video on this. I’ll try to dig it up.

I wouldn’t worry about it unless your running stadium lights in the room the tent is in. So no. Not the worry that most do.

Currently my room has 1 viparspectra 200w and 1 Vivosun 100w so not crazy light.
The room is bigger than needed at about 10x9

This grow I accidentally left my work bench light on in my flowering room
For hours till I noticed and not once but 3 x’s till I put it on a timer lol dah
I fell it’s more then just a little light like that’s the problem
It all stems from breeding in my opinion but I’ve definitely been known to be wrong :expressionless: lol
:joy:

Northern Loki’s low intensity lighting theory makes sense

I have found in the past if a strain has a tendency to herm, then light leak will help it along to do so. I try to stay away from strains that have a tendency to herm a lot and that has help my grows not to experience this problem. Just my thoughts :thought_balloon:. :sunglasses::v:

How dark is dark. What are the tolerance limits:

“Extremely sensitive but not as much as people think.”

I’d say it’s harder to stress them outdoor in general I think and I’d agree with your other point about light intensity. I never had any issues growing on balcony with light leaks from the house/street. I grew on the balcony first (at 50 N) and struggled a bit to adapt to how difficult it is generally indoor by comparison.
