Question about dark period

I know lights can cause a hermie but just how dark do the plants need to be when the lights are off?
For instance my outside plants occasionally have a motion light turn on. It’s not that close to them or bright but does throw a little light their way.
For my tent, the room they are in is dark, but my mom is a night owl so there is a light on in the next room. Beyond a couple pin holes I need to tape, the only other way light could come in is from the top port. Should I start closing that at night to be save? Biggest problem with that is my lights would be on for a few hours before I could open it back up

This divides ppl. You’ll get folks that swear any light will cause stress, produce seeds, or reveg. Then there are others who think light leaks are a myth.

Dr bugbee says they can take the light reflected off the moon and that’s about it in terms of intensity. And in that sense maybe closing the door or covering the tent with thick fabric at night?

Im not sure, I think I did have a small light leak that caused some plants to produce few seeds, but then again I’m not running a science lab and surely there could have been other variables.

Plants can seed without being a herm or getting pollinated? That’s super interesting!

A pinhole is nothing. A little light coming through the vent, a little, is fine.

I just grew in a very leaky cabinet and it was fine.

Outside, well outside I’m fucked.

All the best.

Grow killer auto flowers and light leaks n such are no longer an issue… and for those who say they are too small a plant.

(sorry if i wasnt clear) thats what i meant by stress as a causing factor (of hermaphroditism).

I think the moon is less than one candle ( light measurement )

It seams a lot brighter cuz size of the moon ( large reflective surface ) but the light travels far , to then be reflected by the moon and then to us ,so not as powerful as it seams , plus our eyes adjust to the night /dark so it seams a lot brighter than it actually is

Better to fix pin holes with a dab of black silicon for peace of mind etc and do the best you can to eliminate light leaks as being a factor to worry about : )

I wouldn’t close the top port but I would still try to light proof it

Some of us are gamblers , some of us are not : )

Also I believe it’s strain specific… as some strains won’t herm as easy others will… gotta do the research on EACH strain you grow!! Happy growing!!!

There’s a couple ways (at least) that happens…
If it’s popping ‘nanners’ early/mid flowering that’s ‘not good’. That’s generally what folks are complaining about and trying to avoid.

Sometimes, you get late flower male flowers showing up in seedless bud, these present differently (usually) than the early herms (above).
This is a last desperate attempt by the plant to produce seed.

Soma used this method to produce his feminine seeds.

I grow in Phototrons and one is in the bathroom with a LED night light on wherever the Phototron lights are off in 12/12 mode…I have never had any hermies with my grows, this is just me folks and I don’t expect anyone to do what I do…

Also when I lived in the city I grew in my backyard and guess where the alley lights were, behind my garage and I have never had any hermies even when the alley lights were shining on my outdoor plants…

I also use mother nature to sex my plants during winter months and keep them on my window sills in my front enclosed porch…Guess what, I also have a street lights directly in front of my house and when the plants start to flower during the winter months its either a male or female no hermies…

These were all sexed in my enclosed front porch and 2 of them are being revegged right now…

If I understand correctly the dark period is most important when flowering?
By the sounds of it I should be okay. I will figure something out to block light from the port hole in my tent better, little box chimney or something. Probably will have to unscrew the motion light outside when those parts begin to flower

I tried to grow a photoperiod plant last year behind my garage. But there’s a bright streetlight very nearby.

It definitely messed up the plant.

I ended up chopping it down in September because it just wouldn’t flower correctly.

This year I’m trying an autoflower instead

Is it ok when in veg under lights…in my area Central America…there is a big Goverment project…re newing the old wooden poles …with concrete posts. Fuck the power is cut of past weeks…constantly. Off and on.

I only veg under light then outside or in greenhouse…I’m worried my plants in veg will be affected…I’m informed by the local power provider…that it will all be completed in two weeks… so a month of of and on.

Do you think the constant interruptions of power will affect the plants in Veg. Or will there be a deterioration when they are finally outside and into flower.

TIA

You should see no effect on plants in veg, with the few details provided.
