Herms are caused by nutrients.
Potheads: Plants hate light.
Real world : No plants need proper nutrients. Why is it always blame the light

This is the plant that hermied and I put outside.
It’s made it this far and it was 36F last night
She’s got seeds and I didn’t get her outside before she pollinated the other plant however the other plant that is in there is a mutant and didn’t get pollinated but i think it was behind age wise so
I don’t think night/day is an absolute for the plant, it’s more a matter of “Is there enough light to do photosynthesis or should I go in sleep mode?”
Plants used to live with a bit of light every “night” (not toal dark) can get used to it and not stress, even if it is raised a little sometimes.
Plants used to live in a near total day/night scenario (meaning, indoor) are more prone to stress when a light is introduced at the wrong moment.
And then there’s the genetic factor…
True story: my balcony faces a parking lot lit by 100 1000w HPSs.
It’s super bright at night to the point where my outdoor plants casts shadows.
They didn’t herm, they get stuck between veg and flower and so were leafy and oddly formed, but they didn’t herm.
Thanks for posting that link @Northern_Loki, lot’s of great information in there. Dr. Bugbee is such a great source of information.
i’ve heard this and it sounds like bro science to me. granted it may be anecdotal itself, but i can read by the light of the full moon. if i recall correctly that dr bugbee video posted above had something about the amount of light in the full moon not being nearly as intense as i thought it was but i’m not gonna watch it again just to find out.
Yeah I was just wondering what everyone’s thought was as this is really the first time this has happened to me and is a new grow room
Not only do I have light leaks, my LED lights actually leak when they’re off, thanks to “smart” plugs!
I’ve had herms in the past, but I honestly think it was more genetic than environment.
Ever been around kids that have been raised in a loud environment? A little noise doesn’t bother them when they’re sleeping.
Maybe it’s the same with plants & light leaks. They aren’t as annoyed by things that are familiar.
every time i left a light on, even a small one, i got nanners on a few plants.
a few times, i didn’t leave any lights on, i still got nanners. still, may have been light, or lack thereof, related. i just added lower lights and didn’t get nanners in the larfy regions. will have to test again.
I have/had a few plants that don’t herm from light stress…they didn’t seem to herm for much of anything, heat, nutes, ph, etc.
I’ve had no nanner grows too, but with perfect blackouts. i have never had nanners due to other stresses that i was aware of.
It amazes me how many seem to leave lights on. It must be about the easiest problem to fix. It’s a different kind of LST I suppose
Hhmm never thought of that
I recently watched Bruce Bugby talk about how much light it will take to cause issues, it is surprising very low, lower than most plants. So to be safe even a little is no good. I think he said if you can stand in your grow and read a book after you let your eyes adjust, there is too much light.
D
I’m setting up a 3x3 gorilla at the foot of my bed. 5 feet from my 50" Samsung TV. I’m not going to use anything but my HLG Blackbird and HLG UVA30 and a cloudray 6 inch fan. No inline or anything else. I will be leaving tent doors cracked Back door facing the wall… I will test this light theory this winter. How low light effects. My guess is it will depend on the strain. I’m hardly an expert.
I think the defining factor has to do with if the light has been given the whole time of growth, as in nature, the plant is getting some light at night from the stars, moon etc…
Yep.
It’s only when your eyes adjust to the dark does the moon seem bright ( illusion )
It’s intensity is less than one candle in measurement I think
It’s a very very large surface area reflecting light from far far away
: )
I don’t buy it that plants herm from light leaks,I think it just happens.
I’ve had nanners near harvest from too high light intensity during light cycle, that can happen, but full on hermie when they start flowering, that’s just the way it goes sometimes.
Plants herm from stress
Can be a combination of lots of small stress all togeather or one major
And how temperamental the plant is plays a part ( genetics )
: )
Speaking of the moon, I’m right in the middle of the Ring of Fire eclipse. We don’t get the full eclipse at my house but it is visible from about 100 miles or so SW. Right now it’s eerily dark for 10:30am. I did get one good look at it when some heavy clouds blew through. I haven’t been able to look at it since.
The wind totally stopped and there is a reason for it. Cool stuff.
I’m beginning to thing it has more to do with stress or genetics.
But I will definitely be watching it
