How dark at lights out?

Hey everyone. I have a question. This is my second week into flower and I am growing in a 4x4 Vivosun tent in my basement. I have 2 oscillating fans and a 4” filter pulling out the warm air. At the bottom of the tent, I have both the mesh ports open to allow air in. When lights are off (9:00 pm- 9am) I have the door closed to the basement. To me it’s pretty dark. Am I getting tooo worried about light getting in? Does it have to be sooooooo dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face?

if the vents at the bottom are the only one’s open then you’re totally fine, mine is the same way and zero issues here.

Only way it’d be an issue is if you have like 1 inch pots or something and a light pointing in the vent

If you are using the tent closed, I wouldn’t be afraid.

I’ve got a very similar set up never had a problem

Note : surge protectors and things that have little light to let you know there one should stay outside the tent

Imo people get a little overly excited about light leaks most ofvthe time. Obviously you dont want to open up the tent while dark but those tiny light leaks are very unlikely to cause you any issues

I’ve heard of folks putting tape over LED indicator lights…
I’ve always questioned that, the full moon throws a lot of light and that shouldn’t cause problems (1st assumption). There should be some night illumination tolerance in all of our plants, absolute darkness should not be manditory.

That might be an interesting project to test that…

I once saw a photo of how a plant sees a light from an ON interruptor in the dark and it was like comet Halley, since then I am one of those guys that put tape in dehu, heater and anything with a bulb or led in it …

@Gpaw It’s hard to put into words but I think while the light from the moon seems bright , it’s not really as much as you think , because the moons surface area is so big , it’s reflective light from the sun millions of miles away , looks a great amount but it’s concentration is very week thus not affecting the plants ( under one candle maybe )
Our eyes also adjust to the night / darkness , giving the wrong impression of more light being reflected by the moon than it really gives , kind of
: )

My tent has an open vent in a darkish room. Works fine.

I have also used a few coats of nail polish to black out an indicator light.

Yep no power bars or anything allowed in the tent. Everything is outside.

Ya. Sorry about the flipped photos. I have an account with deposit photos, have just been lazy uploading.

Yes, 1 foot candle sounds about right. I recall the light is polarized but I forget by what means.
If one was cleaver, I’ll bet they could ballpark a number you could measure with a light meter app on a phone.

I shoot for absolute darkness. Tape on the indicator lights, etc. The way I look at it, light leaks are stress for a plant. Some plants will take more stress than others. If anyone finds hermies, light leaks are the first thing I have them look for.

For what ever reason, outdoors is not the same. My guess would be b/c of the intensity of the sun vs indoor lighting. my experience anyway. :v:

Interesting explanation. I moved outdoor clones from 1 spot to another, clipping off about 3 hours of direct sunlight/glare with building/tree obstruction… & although daylength is the same, I had to add shadecloth because the new spot is brighter. Long story short: they flipped themselves for me. :sunflower:

My guess is I should consider heavily shading the evening/setting sun & they’ll stay in flower. :+1: no dep needed…awesome.

Without a light-meter I can’t confirm but I think the light here is 2x brighter than a 1kW HPS.

:evergreen_tree: at least!

Dont worry , it doesnt need to be so dark that you cant see anything . When we grow with light dep , we have more problems in early season keeping plant in VEG to not flower , then to be worry about REVEG . Most people will be surprised , keeping plants in deep shadow will make them flower , or some time just the part of the plant in deep shadow , keepin plant 7-8 feet away from CFL’s will make them flower especially shots hidden on sides . Nights can be very bright because of the moon on clear sky that you can see clearly every plant with no worries of reveg . Even if you have intention to REVEG plant you need to keep minimum 2 weeks under 24 lights on . And even if you have light leak just the part of the plant where is the leak will reveg …
