I recently received a part of a collection that was from an inherited stash of seeds. Mostly pre-2005. I have alot of experience with very old seeds and my process seems to work really well. Out of 18 I got 18 sprouts. I’d just like to share that with everyone so we get more success with old genetics. You cannot just sand them and expect them to sprout. Its like 10% success for most old seeds, maybe 20%. They’ve spent all their energy on staying alive for 20-30 years and they just don’t have the energy to crack the shell and send a taproot out. I will work up a fully detailed explanation and detailed how to with pictures starting now. I’ve already done this with 18 very old seeds and ill do a couple more to share the info.
Please do there are many of us in the same situation.
Old tired but not dead seeds
Would the process be for old properly stored and/or old improperly stored seeds? Either way looking forward to your write up.
FWIW there is a video by Khalifa explaining how to crack seeds.
You will know as soon as you crack the seed. I will post pictures of it all. I should have documented the first 18 but I wasn’t thinking to make a topic about it at the time. The other beautiful part is they sprout overnight. Within 24 hours they went from seed, to sprout to soil. Its very fast and it’ll work just as well on fresh seeds. I’ve done both. No more waiting. I realize this sounds crazy but its really 95% success for me.
Haven’t done any research on it, just know what works for me and want to share with you all!
I am very curious about this issue. I’ll enjoy following your work.
It may take me a minute to document, its hard to do and take pictures but I’m currently working on it. The process is so easy though. I had found seeds from when I was a teenager, had 90% success. They were over 30 years old in 2021.
Are you fully removing the seed coat?
In most cases, yes. Sometimes they break outside the seam and you can choose to either continue or let it try its luck.
I have a stash of pre-2010 bag seed i’ve been sitting on. Definitely interested in a way to germinate in them.
That would be interesting to see, thanks for sharing…
I love the piss jug btw. Makes me giggle every time. I really hope you encountered that in the wild. It would be even funnier.
Some wonderful trucker left that in the parking lot where I work and they make me laugh so of course I took a pic.
I am hand cracker myself. But I dont get 18 of 18 to germinate lol. I am curious how your doing it. And thank you for sharing the knowledge.
Out of likes, this is priceless
Are you using auxine?
Pert near but I use my fingers and voodoo
I don’t like to wait so I just make up my own answers.
