New to growing seeking advice

Hello overgrow! New to the community and growing in general and came to learn a thing or two and hopefully meet some cool folks along the way.

Recently a friend of mine who has been growing for a long time got a job overseas and basically gave me everything he had for growing. He had been trying to get me to start growing a while back and I’m wishing I would have learned from him to get the hands on experience.

Long story short I have everything I need to get started, tons of seeds, a couple bags of soil, tents, lights, and some dry nutrients. Looking for advice on how to get through my first grow and learn the basics. Any input or thread recommendations on where to start would be greatly appreciated!

Def check out growweedeasy.com for simple tutorials and would suggest starting with photoperiod over autoflower since don’t have to worry ab mistakes or a timer. Cannabis gardening is pretty straightforward but certain fundamentals like watering practices and dialing in your environment are critical for success.

Welcome to the OG @DirtyWork happy to have you here! Headies is on point with that site it’s an excellent resource. You can also start checking out some of the grow journals. I use soil and would be happy to answer any questions I can.

The biggest part is starting. Just get seeds started and go from there!

I will be sure to check that out, thank you! I’m pretty sure all of the seeds I acquired are photoperiod. I have a pretty basic knowledge of how to grow just no experience yet.

I plan on starting some seeds today but I got so many from my buddy I have no idea where to start, literally hundreds of seeds, it’s kind of absurd lol

Would you recommend I start with regular or feminized? I know how to identify male plants from seeing pictures from my friend, just wondering if feminized would be more streamlined for a first go.

I started with fems. I would say start with them. They take a little worry off your plate. And save you feeding nutes to plants you’re just going to kill. Also in my opinion you save as many males for later breeding efforts as possible.

Hey DirtyWork, welcome to OG! I’ve grown regular and feminized photos seeds as well as autoflowers. All of them are fairly straightforward and you’re learning so mistakes will and should happen. Getting good at growing is seeing mistakes and learning from them. No matter what you start with you will have pros and cons. Fems are what most growers want if not breeding and looking for males for their program. Regular seeds are generally going to be cheaper per seed to buy over feminized seeds.

Thankfully for your friend’s generosity you don’t have to worry about buying seeds for now. Feminized seeds both photoperiod and autoflower will give you smoke when all is said and done. I say pick something and start researching and learning about germination and seedlings. Then keep the learning going as they grow.

If you want to post the strains here you could get folks to give their two cents on what to germinate (pop) first which could be fun for everyone. In the end just have fun, don’t be too hard on yourself for any failures and you’ll be grown massive buds in no time.

Well then I’ll more than likely do feminized the first couple times to get the hang of things. What’s the best way to go about saving males? I didn’t really have any plans to breed anytime soon, want to make sure I can actually grow before I get crazy lol

Not really a saving males thing just a side benefit that you don’t grow them and kill them right now without purpose.

I appreciate the warm welcome and input! He was very generous indeed, I have a whole ammo box full of seeds, a little overwhelming…

Also, you said you have a bunch of seeds, might wanna reseach some of what you have, if labeled and what not, to figure which are ones you think you might like. Wouldnt wanna put 4 months or whatever into something you dont enjoy. For example, end up with some heavy couchlock, when you were wanting something that allowed you to stay active, etc…
Just my opinion.

Break them out and get some photos going. You can also post them here, were folks are all about seed packs: What are your latest seed purchases? Post those new packs & purchase info here - #3553 by Itslegalnow

What an exciting journey you’re about to start! You have made it to a great place to support you as you learn.

I’m running hydro so I don’t have a ton of practical advice, but I can confirm it’s very frustrating to have to kill plants in your first grow, so I’ll echo the advice to start with fems.

Good luck! I’ll follow and cheer you on.

your first job is to inventory and properly store those. hard to know what to grow if you don’t even know what ya got

man, if u know how old those seeds are, might be some heirloom landrace seeds u for sure don’t want to hybridize. That old stuff is precious.
