Our ever changing grow

Bro being lazy feels great while your doing it but when it effects your plants you end up working a lot harder trying to fix the issues. Trust me. It’s a constant issue I battle with  My tap water comes out at 0.3ec so around 150ppm and the pH usually in the mid 7s so I’d say it’s soft water. I use water direct from the tap as you know but I’m not as attentive as most growers are so the odd leaf twist doesn’t catch my eye or bug me if it does 🤷

Strange my water numbers are not much different than yours. But at least where I am my water is considered hard.

What is hard water?

Hard water is the one that concentrates a high volume of dissolved mineral salts, especially calcium and magnesium. The hardness is measured in milligrams of calcium carbonate per liter (mg /l). Depending on the concentration of magnesium and calcium in the water, we can talk about four types of water:

  • Soft water (concentration of less than 150 mg / L of calcium carbonate)
  • Semi Soft water (concentration between 150-200 mg / L calcium carbonate)
  • Hard water (concentration between 200 and 400 mg / l of calcium carbonate)
  • Very hard water (concentration between 400 and 550 mg / l of calcium carbonate.

Thanks for that @Esrgood4u

Interesting, If you look at post 401 I found out mine is 150mg/L. My municipality says thats hard water. Im in Ontario. I assume your in Canada because of the metric. Sorry I dont know how to link it. Anyway I stopped adding calcium in my mixes and things are much better.

UK @Floyd
Each municipal water company do stuff differently but the starting ec is usually calcium in whatever form the water company use. This is why I use Epsom only and not a full on calmag supplement. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure there is other stuff in the water that is conductive but I’ve not really delved that deep into it. :+1:

Ok I see. My starting EC is 500, and Im only adding epsom now as well. Much better. lol. Ive been changing grow styles and mediums in the last couple years. So understanding my starting water would have helped for sure. Always learning. Im a wing it sort of guy

I wing every grow lately. Just not got the time to be constantly making adjustments to things. I’d likely be better growing in living soil as all you do is add water and I could prob add living soil to my autopots. Water is free though. Living soil over here is £40+ for a 45 litre bag

I didnt think about calcium .

I hear you. I did hydro for years went to soil, but missed the fast growth of hydro. Tried hempys with decent results. tried to do soil, but found it exspensive and labour intensive. Went to hand watering coco. Great results, but hand watering daily sucks. Now Im in Octopots, SIPs like you. Now learning what works again. lol.

I’m still in rdwc bro but I love how simple the autopots are. They just work. No messing about. Thing is when I finish my grows I through the Coco at the bottom of my garden and rake it out. Think I’ve added 6 ich in height to it

I now believe that to much calcium has been messing me up. I dont add it now. Much better.

I thought Autopots were a bottom feed system that just fed from a rez as the water was used up.

It is. I’m currently in rdwc. Got the autopots outside. The rdwc I’ve been running about 2 years now. I just like the simplicity of the autopots but also I can grow 9 plants instead of 4 when I use them.

I get rid of coco the same way, but my outside gardens are small. too much coco is not good. lol

I’d reuse but that’s a PITA
