Overgrow.com: Let's Talk About the Future

Oh WOW ok definitely be upping my PATREON today an I think it should be mandatory to sign up after a 30-60-90 days.

Making donations mandatory would quickly harm this site and its community. Before attempting to “improve” the community, it’s essential to be active and spend some time here to understand its values truly. The spirit of OG is not solely about money, and we should consider those who may be unable to donate. Should they be exempt from mandatory donations, especially if they have been part of the community for years?

I recognize the need to raise funds for @LemonadeJoe. I use Google Cloud for several websites, and even small, relatively slow servers can cost over $100 a month. Personally, I wouldn’t question where the money goes, even if @LemonadeJoe were making a million dollars a year. He is providing a service that we currently cannot offer.

I choose to donate voluntarily, often contributing more than the minimum to support those who cannot donate. However, if I were required to donate to remain on the site, I would leave without hesitation.

In my opinion, if someone hasn’t been here for at least a year (or even longer), they have no reason to start making improvements. Trying to improve something you don’t yet understand is impossible.

Just my opinion on the subject and not directed at anyone specifically.

Not donation to sign up on patreon

Good to see so many here are good at making money. Some of us are not so good at it. Thank you for supporting this site for those of us that cannot.

When you sign up for Patreon, aren’t you essentially donating your money? Paying for access is not required, so it’s essentially a donation, just one you plan to make at a scheduled interval.

I’m not sure if that was the intended message.

The people who donate to the site do it because they want to and are invested in the success of the platform they love, not because money is easy for them to obtain. Instead, its value to the community is more important to them than spending it elsewhere. Not to mention some donate in time/energy rather than money.

For example, @DougDawson holds auctions for the server and participates in an exhausting number of seed giveaways. Since I started here, I have seen thousands of dollars worth of seeds thrown around at his own expense and simply to do it. Now, we will tell him he didn’t pay on Patreon, so he should be excluded from the site.

Those who can donate money will. Those who cannot and want to help can donate their time and effort. These are all worthy contributions, and none are more valuable than others.

I watched this community create a care package to help with a fellow user’s medical expenses. I don’t know the total raised, but I know it’s more than you would see on any other site, even those selling access. I have seen people donate to help users with general bills, child care, court fees, etc. The fact that a community online puts together finances to aid a member they love is above and beyond what you could expect from an online forum. This community is the closest version of what the internet was supposed to be like. People from all different locations, skills, knowledge and input all freely available to the masses.

For example, I held an auction and watched at least three people bid on lots of seeds they absolutely didn’t need—all because they wanted to help out. I don’t think they even planned on planting some of them, but they didn’t hesitate to jump in.

No doubt he probably is. To my point, the people that can… will. Let’s not exclude those that can’t.

If that was the entirety of what you gathered from my post, that’s unfortunate.

If ur growing weed I’m sure u can afford 5 bucks I mean u had to buy the set up or make the setup closet lights nutes etc nothings free in life

True, but cost isn’t necessarily counted in dollars. What about sweat equity, so to speak, or true barter. No money involved.

FWIW, while it’s true that I buy potting soil, a minimal amount of nutes, and a one-time capitol investment in some containers (mostly 10 gallon), the sun is free.

I personally would be uncomfortable generalizing like that. I know a homeless guy who has a couple of plants. I doubt he could afford five dollars on any kind of regular basis. I gave him the soil and the container. Frank doesn’t have internet and I doubt he’s computer literate. I think mostly he’s hungry.

Again, you are missing the point. I understand $5 is not a lot of money in relation to growing. The principle remains the same, No one should be forced to donate in order to be here. You are still focusing on only the money. People contribute in all kinds of way.

Let it be out of kindness and choice and not obligation. What next, start publically shaming anyone who donates less than $50/month?

Overall the upgrade has been a big improvement, but in some respects it still feels unfinished with user interface problems that remain unaddressed.

Am I the only one who thinks the “like” interface is totally disfunctional after the update?

If I want to see who liked a post, first you get a popup with a list of names

click a name, and you get an overlapping popup

with a list of icons, but no names
image
to see the complete list of icons, you have to click another dropdown menu within the popup

so if you want to go the profile of someone from the list, you have to hover over each thumbnail, to open yet another popup for their profile, causing the list to dissappear. So if you didn’t click the right name, you have to repeat the whole process.

if there are more than 3 rows of icons, it can’t even show everyone who liked the post. Even if you open the dropdown menu, the list is limited to only 26 users.

Not only is this visually confusing, it’s cumbersome, and clunky, it’s less functional than the previous interface for viewing likes. What used to take two clicks now takes at least 5, which you will have to repeat for every username or profile you want to view.

I think this makes the site less social, no longer being able to easily get in touch with the people who like your posts or easily check out their profile.

and if you get more than 26 likes on a single post, you can’t even see who liked it.
