Overgrow.com: Let's Talk About the Future

I’m an old stoner too lol

But I live 2 states East of you and they simply (the Government and PD) don’t have a sense of humor regarding this amazing herb.

As a relatively new member here (less than two years), I’d be right up for helping pay @LemonadeJoe a real salary for his full time attention to OG.

No, not necessarily, and in this regard, I think any changes in the vibe would be more due to the community at large than LJ or the mods.

I think that can get sketchy cuz we’ve seen other sites fall victim to that. They say they’re going to do something and then they get a taste of money and start to either fuck over everything, or just not do anything.

Good merchandise is a good idea and the support button on the menu is good also. These extra features have been really good. There are ads here already. Are monetization needs not being met? I thought what he was saying is that for him to pay his own bills and devote all time + server bills etc then we would need more stuff here at OG.

A community hosted on a site which requires a level of commitment, expertise, and experience to maintain that is not insignificant. LJ resurrected the site and provided a place for the community to grow. For LJ, a proper admin, to dedicate time, effort, and resources, he must divert himself from other tasks. He has a job and a personal life too. It’s his site/domain. As far as I can tell, he’s not running it like a highly profitable business venture, just wants to be able to balance the amount of time he has in a day with the need to be able to support himself.

Tell me exactly the day to day tasks that makes managing a forum a full time job ? @Tracker

I hear you, being illegal to grow where I live also refrains me to associate my bank with a pot forum while becoming a supporter , maybe a “white” Patreon account would help others in my case to participate… Pirata|nullxnull

I agree, I was a member of a few old music trading sites that went down due to that very thing. I get a seriously different vibe here, but I am always high.

I thought he said that in order to be a full time administrator with a living salary, the site needs more income, not necessarily more stuff. More annual Patreon supporters would be preferable.

Read the first post please… Who do you think codes and add our new features to the forum, while taking care of everything high level?

As a developer I know how much time stuff takes and it’s very hard to have a full time job + family/personal life + side project. It might work for a year or two, but you can’t keep on doing it forever.

I guess it’s very hard to understand how much it time and energy it takes for non developers who have never tried to do anything more serious. This is a large forum with high traffic! It’s not a phpBB forum…

I don’t know what the heck that is (and there’s no reason to try and explain, cuz I won’t get it! HA!), but I am confident LJ works his ass off to keep this place operating as smoothly as it does, not to mention improvements as in the recent past.

I don’t know details of what happens in the backend here. I do have experience in IT network admin.

I imagine there is webdev, database admin, server management/admin, forum design, customization, implementation, testing, updates/patches, forum moderation/admin, various recurring tasks on daily/weekly/monthly basis.

Not sure if there is any legal/compliance aspect.

In admin stuff, I always feel like I’m chasing squirrels. Rarely do I feel like the network/systems are perfect. I can get them good enough to have as few complaints as possible. Just as soon as I think everything’s good, something pops up. It’s whack-a-mole for sure.

I did read it. Also read mind and not cherry pick my comments. I’m just not understanding the need to have all these addons and features if it puts so much stress in Joe that he needs to quit his day job and we pay his salary.

Wouldn’t it be easier to go with a software like xenforo with the addons already built in ? It’s a much better experience for the user and they have every feature you have here. The costs to buy the software, add ons , and host the site aren’t so crazy expensive that server fund auctions and sponsors wouldn’t easily take care of the costs. Just an idea

I don’t really think it’s netter of him being forced to quit his job. As I understand it, is that he wants to do a lot more for the forum then he’s being able to do right now. To be able to do that, he needs to find time and thus naturally thinking about how to take time from his day job.

I think the community really needs someone who does custom development for the needs of the time and the niche. So using any out of the box solution would definitely be a start but not a continuation.

Overgrow is at the continuation as of now and I know that the base is prepriatary software that is further developed.

Overgrow can be so much more then a usual forum board and further niche development would enhance the quality of the community a lot!

I would say they are not mutually exclusive. We are a community for the people that resides within a business. Without the business, there is no place to house the community.

I would say this is the stopping point of ideas.
