My best friend of almost 20 years passed away yesterday morning and I feel like I will never be the same because my heart is so broken that it feels like I’m just empty inside.

Lots of people will say that she was “just a cat” but she was more than that to me. I went through cancer twice and she was always there for me… my daughter has too much on her own plate and my human friends just sort of faded away when they heard about my diagnosis, but Candy was there.

Unlike a lot of cats that seem aloof and usually present a “take it or leave it” attitude about spending time with humans, Candy was always there for me when I was sick, depressed, sad, etc.

We bonded with each other when she was a tiny frail kitten and especially a year later when she had a litter of her own and I helped her deliver a butt-first breech kitten that almost killed her.

Through the years she has traveled with me everywhere, I had jobs that kept me on the road for months at a time and she was always there with me in the motels. When I was in the hospital having my surgeries, I left her with a human friend to take care of her, and when I got out, I was told that Candy watched the door every day and meowed… like she was grieving and waiting for me to come back.

After that, I noticed that she had separation anxiety every time I left the house. People would tell me that she seemed nervous and watched for me to come home the way dog owners talk about their pets waiting for them to come home… she actually missed me and would come right over as soon as I sat down… either in my lap or on the arm of the chair next to me.

If I was on the computer too long and she wanted attention, she would climb up and lay across my wrists… THAT was a challenge… having an 8 lb cat draped across your forearms is like trying to type with a 4 lb barbell on each wrist.

If I happen to fall asleep with my hand flat, palm up, she would lay her head in my hand. She did that for the last time just a couple of days ago… it was one of the last times she could walk a little.

She was one of those rare cats that would come if you called, (usually), and always wanted to be right in the middle of whatever I was doing… she followed me around the house like a puppy and had her own little rug in the plant room so she could watch me water and prune. She enjoyed riding on the dashboard of my van and taking walks on a leash back when we were living in motels.

I know it may sound stupid, but because of the way she always came over to comfort me when I was sad, I believe it’s why she held out and stayed alive as long as she did… she stayed to comfort me during my grieving over her, not realizing that it was HER illness and impending departure that was causing my emotional distress.

My heart is broken and I will never recover from losing her. Candy was just an ordinary grey tabby cat, but she was my friend during a lot of years when I had nobody else.

I will miss her.

I’m so sorry for your loss. We have a grey tabby that is much like that. She wants to be right where we are at all times. It can, actually, be annoying at times. lol
She came up to the house with an injury to her front leg, pregnant and not trusting people in any way shape or form. It took a while to gain her trust but now she is absolutely bonded with us. Some people just don’t understand how deep a cat can love.
You were fortunate.
Peace

best dog I’ve ever had the good fortune to spend a short life with. Understood English, German and hand command. Watched over my son from day one like he would give his Life. Not sure any dog will match him tbh
