Specialisation in outdoor growing and preservation of genetics

INTRODUCTION

Every grower comes to the point, when prefering some methods and genetics tested by experience. To move on whole new level you must grow on as your experience levels. Either indoor, outdoor or breeding motherplants or in specific system everyone has own reasons which to prefer. As outdoor grower I decided to keep cuttings and do some selection as easy as possible for me under my circumstances. So I rebuild smoking-chamber into motherplant-room. I tried to go as cheap as possible because this is ment only for preservation of genetics for next seasons, but with little effort I can “copypaste” and double the space as I use modular components. Now I have 7 strains after last season some of them to plant again and some for crossing. Ventilation is passive(winter) or active through former chimney(spring and summer). Still solving some minor issues as temperature in winter. 15 degrees is ok for motherplants and good for selection reasons(strong plants for outdoor) but is insufficient for cuttins to grow roots so I purchased heating pad under aquarium for future. Bulb is 125w Feliz blue and industrial fluorescent light for cuttings has 2x 36w. If I decided to “go bigger” and make more clones It´s easy to add one more light for cuttings and change bulb for Agrolite 150 or 200w.

Strains I´ve chosen last season:

For this season:

Double Shark (GWS x GWS)
Early Bitch (Special Queen early pheno)
Special Green(Special Queen green leavy pheno)
Apollo Kush
Green Hulk

For crossing purposes:

Brutal Sweet Mendo
Apollo Kush
Critical Mass

Now I´am preparing for new season so here is the list:

For male plants:

Mazar Boy
Purpurea Alfa
Ed Rosental Super Bud x GWS(maybe)

For female plants:

The Ultimate
Pamir Gold
Apollo Kush
Double Shark
Early Bitch
Special Green
Brutal Sweet Mendo

…also trying to obtain original Hashplant clone from local breeder. I have experience with Mazar x Hashplant cross but I failed to preserve genetics in the past :frowning:

I can´t wait for the crossing results in 2018

So it begins. Now I have to install the heating pad and wrap it with some foil to prevent overheating roots and also to prevent damage to the pad by some manipulation in the room. Also I will finish my guerilla grow 2016 and add some info about selected plants soon.

PS: Outlander is just noname. When I was doing final selection by tasting I was so stoned, that I dont´t know from which bud it emerged, but it was so big and nice I planted it for fun.Not intended to plant any seed from closed selection though I did it.

One fluorescent tube nearly exploded after half year in dusty cellar. I have to buy one tomorrow, but all else going smoothly so far.

Good work!

So basically you want to keep backup of every strain in mother room and deploy their clones outdoors to choose best…?

It´s better that way. Last year I made clones later from outdoor growing plants and in 2 cases cuttings refused to cooperate several times so I was unable to keep the pheno. Luckily nothing strong and tasty or vigorous enough for reasonable yield. Suppose some genotypes just rooting very poorly after they get behind some peak point in their life cycle or root very poorly in general. There was no pre-flowers and had no problem preserving early phenos even with some flowers on them. So maybe I decide for keeping copies inside right away and simply re-cut due to capacity reasons.

And now let´s have a look on previous year OUTDOOR STRAIN SELECTION results.

SPECIAL GREEN

Origin: Mother - Special Queen, Father - probably Great White Shark or Blue Mystic

Height: average(1-1,5m)

Yield: average

THC content: average-high

Suitable for: Outdoor - not tested indoor

Harvest: 10th October

This cross is very leavy vigor plant. I recommend fim for best yield, because this strain is not very branchy if you let it to nature. It´s easy to grow for beginners and not attacked by molds in late autumn.Flowers are big with lot of small leaves covered with layer of resinous trichomes.“Flagship” of this selection so far.Harvest time is ideal for central Europe.

Smokereport:

Dried buds smells like spring meadow. Smoke has strong earthy taste sometimes with weak pine essence.Effect is strongly physical and confused in the beginning, but becomes creative later and lasts long.

EARLY BITCH

Origin: Mother - Special Queen, Father - probably Great White Shark or Blue Mystic

Height: high(1,8m and higher)

Yield: high

THC content: average

Suitable for: Outdoor

Harvest: end of September

Central Europe dwellers will appreciate one of the earliest harvests with regular strain and easy grow.I don´t recommend fim, because this strain makes strong side branches naturally into the shape of Xmas tree and these branches needs lot of sun. This plant is moderately attacked by molds before harvesting, so some biological treatment(e.g. Pythium oligandrum) in late flowering stages is advised.Perfect choice for early harvest outside.

Smokereport:

Smells somewhat fruity. When dried slowly it gets aroma similar to citrus fruit.Taste is tender, sweet and skunky and stays in mouth after exhaling - one of the best I tried.Effect is vigilant, dextrous, curious, pain relieving and calm. Can bring long forgotten memories. So there is some medical potential.

GREEN HULK

Origin: Green Hulk regular from czechoseeds.eu

Height: small(0,7-1,2m)

Yield: lower

THC content: high-very high

Suitable for: Outdoor/Indoor

Harvest: 15th October

Except short grow this strain shows strong vigor in central Europe climate. Molds occur very sporadically before harvest so it´s easy to grow outside.I recommend fim to reach best Yield.Only draw back of this strain is short growth and lower yield outside. Which is compensated with high quality of end product. Also suitable for indoor because of this.

Smokereport:

Smells plain with feint skunky/afghan odor.Taste is skunky and stays in mouth after exhaling.Effect is both strongly physical and cerebral which means anxious and restless and may become almost schizophrenic as some strong sativas do.Combine with green tea,CBD sativa or beer after smoke to calm down  Maybe not the best for people with some personal issues or mental illness - especially schizophrenics and people who often and easily incline to depression.

Almost missed one strain which is also good. Not so leavy and easy to trim after harvest.

DOUBLE SHARK

Origin: Mother - Great White SHark, Father - probably Great White Shark, SBL or Purpurea Alpha

Height: average(1-1,6m)

Yield: average

THC content: high

Suitable for: Outdoor - not tested indoor, but should do

Harvest: 10 - 20th October

I recommend fim for best yield, because this strain is not very branchy too if you let it to nature. It´s
easy to grow for beginners and not attacked by molds so often in late
autumn. Buds are very compact and easy to trim.

Smokereport:

Dried buds smells like nothing special although it has slight scent of honey. Smoke is mild skunky or even sweet. Effect is strongly physical.Despite that it´s still cheerful, happy and calming. So the F2 selection is better, because I got rid of the initial uncomfortable headkick and the bud size improved too.

Now I have to say something about seed selection, planting in general and my opinions on the subject. It is always better to put seeds to some clean air-proof box than in the soil. I use two paper handkerchiefs or two layers of toilet paper on the bottom, then wet it with sprayed water and I put the seeds in. After that I cover with another two layers and wet it too. After closing I usually put it in some dark and temperate place.

After some years I learned to discard some abnormalities and even seeds smaller than average from the specific plant.

Here comes the question if size really matters. I think not that much according to genetic material. But on the other hand the size of the seed is given by size of single flower, so this should ensure the material for selection will be bunch without any abnormal small round buds. So common sense tells me to select the biggest seeds from each plant

Recently I had to increase my capacity for clones and seedlings together, because I need to be able to root cuttings continuously even in winter so I obtained heating pads and changed that shitty shade for wavereflector in mother-room. Also changed white foil in mother-room, because of that rusty contamination from spraying. Now I will pull out the plants and put it back after spraying.I was such a pig in a hurry

The last step is “bonsai moms” before planting into bigger pots and making some cuttings. Now waiting for the results. Next step will be sexing the selection but that will be much later.

Getting better after the trimming and bending stress. Brutal Sweet Mendo (in the front) has huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge(!) nutrition reguirements so I have to fertilize more often.

lookin good dude. i cant wait to try outdoor. unfortunatly up here the growing season is much too short.

Thanks dude  Have you tried some autoflower strains? In my experience most of them are shitty because it´s latest fashion followed by market boom so it´s quantity over quality. But if I had no other option with outdoor I would try to find good one. Although I dont´t like the trying part without option of preserving a clone.

Hello everyone!

Had lot of work on garden and repairing the house since beginning of spring. Special Green proved it´s quality as best motherplant with 42 cuttings when other plants yields up to max 30 cuttings each round. So I ended up with lot of clones for fellow growers. Week ago I switched the seedlings to 12/12 and now I have 7 males and first 3 females in the selection.

Some first recognized females:

Male selection:

Sativy ERSBxGWS male:

Incredible indica pheno Purpurea Alpha male with buds and even with trichomes and resin on leaves:

I must definitely try the last two  Don´t have any idea about which strain polinate with which male. Have to think about it. Also regret getting rid of Durban Poison motherplant. It looks like good base for crosses because of vigor and yield rates. Hopefuly I have some F2 seeds so there will be no problem to harvest parents genes via cross-breeding if I wanted.
