#1-3 are Ethiopian males. #2 is the one I liked best before the tests, and still the one I’ll use after.
#4 is an Ethiopian female, because I only got 3 males, so I figured I’d test it as well since I’ll have seeds from it.
Next I’ll do some pollination and in a few weeks I’ll test at least 4x SyrianLeb females from whichever ones I like best. I’ll just pollinate everything and test them closer to finish I think.
Yes you are correct and I had forgotten about that. The jar that came with my kit was broken so I had to find another one and an old candy jar was the only thing around the house that was pretty flat and it just happened to be a good height.
Also, I have been adding the chloroform to the jar first and then placing the plate in the jar and if I accidently place it in initially on an angle and the liquid starts climbing one side of the plate faster then this has caused some warping for me. Next time I was going to try and place the plate in first and squirt the chloroform in the back or to the side and see how that goes.
In my experience the bleeding from the spots has been not allowing the plate to dry long enough before dipping into the dye. It’s really only an issue if you have a small blip of CBD above (or the THCV below) but your spots seem to have nice separation. Cool stuff!
Brilliant, that all makes sense to me. It seems like it should help a lot if you can get the chloroform into the jar slowly without dripping on the plate.
I’ll have to keep my eye out for a jar like that. I’m pretty certain my wife can come up with something.
It’s great to see your results and thanks for sharing! It’s interesting that your Ethiopian female seems to test a tad lower in THC than the males but looks to me like it does have some CBG? I have a kit myself and have been somewhat apprehensive to use it after reading the steps but I am sure it’s a lot easier when you actually do it versus just reading about it.
It’s hard to tell but it could be showing CBC as the key makes it look like the CBC shows more red versus the CBG which is more lighter red orange?
It’s just a leaf test and it wasn’t even flowering long enough to have any pistils yet. So I wouldn’t really make that conclusion. I think the only thing I can really take away from the test is the presence or lack of cannabinoids in the results. Probably the ratio between the spots on a single plant is relevant as well.
I wasn’t really trying to calibrate the plant matter quantities or get meaningful percentages. I’m just looking for good signs of THCV in the males.
Thanks! I’m pretty enthusiastic about being able to check out the males. @deeez99 really turned me onto it. I had no idea it would work, but now I think I’ll be doing it quite a bit.
This has been a while ago but in case it is still relevant
There are cheap DIY tests for THC and CBD.
5% potassium hydroxyde in ethanol for CBD, 5% vanillin in ethanol + hydrochloric acid for THC. More info can be found at the following link and probably on OG, search for beam test.
The LPH are really starting to put out pistils now. I picked out shorter phenos, and I like the height on these. The taller one is maybe a little stretchy still. I like the short one quite a bit. I’m finally getting some skinnies. They might take a bit lower nutrient concentration. I think I have them at 1.6. Probably should make a note to mix a lower N mix next time.
I put down some Ethiopian pollen on the lowers for the hell of it, and started them on automated drip. I also pollinated all of the SyrianLeb (fully). They’ll be done in 4ish weeks, and testing to follow.
Here’s a shot of the control switch on the hybrid hempys when it’s just fed. Once the plants drink up the water in their pots, they’ll soak up a few cm of water from below and trigger the feed. No schedules!
Went out of town for a week and automaton did great. LPH are starting to bulk up. It looks like I got a little fast and loose when the Ethiopian pollen on the big one and made seeds in a few unintended places. Whoops!
Here’s a couple shots of the LPH with macro on. Nice looking buds, you can see the purple starting to come in on the first photo. Next week, there will probably be a lot more color shift. But who knows, first time growing these! The shortest one in stacking really nicely. Smells are mostly pepper, pine and lemon right now. They’ve been changing a lot through the grow.
This LPH is really coming out nice. I’m starting to get a flush of deep purple color now. They’ll be done in a week or two bearing a small grip of seeds from the thcv Ethiopian male.
I still like the shorty the best, but the tall one has some really nice looking buds. Next week they should be purple beauties!
