black sugar suffered the worst. such a shame. they were MASSIVE buds. worthy of glamor shots. they were so dense it was just trapping any liquid. in this case (since it hasn’t rained) it was the last time i sprayed them off for bugs 3 or 4 days ago.
shook them off like i always do afterwards, but gently as the colas are so damn heavy. didn’t want to snap anything. i did it on a sunny day with a good breeze too just to make sure they dried off properly… didn’t matter. and that’s all it took.
i cut a LOT of the top colas off from black sugar. had to. infected all the way up and down. i lost a LOT. disappointing, but i will still come away with a harvest with what’s left and still clean/unaffected… most of the lower branches.
just the “cover of high times” colas got infected. (figures)
checked through the rest of the garden. found one branch on AC GDP the dogs had snapped running thru the garden. it had drooped and was catching all the watering overspray. i had to lop that one off. the rest was ok.
did some chopping and moving around. still fighting bugs.
worst
(bug) season
ever
some are going to make it to finish line in pretty decent shape… others are just limping in. which brings me to the latest harvest
3rd to Finish - Acapulco Gold
this was another “mercy” finish. it had a few clears left but very much cloudy trichs. handful of ambers. it could have used some more time, but it had been a favorite of the bugs this year and the damage was done early on. it washed up nice, smelled pretty good (hard to place old school scents) during wash and ended up producing 5 hangers of decent sized colas. not super dense, but respectable. hopefully dry compact and not whispy.
the corner is throwing in the towel. abuela needs a stash.
moving on… outside saw some things move around. i put blueberry headband in AG’s place. want it to get some better light for a good finish. this seed i tossed for me and it has grown quite nicely despite the small pots.
thanks for following along. appreciate your compliments.
man, i wish i had more to show for all the effort i put in battling the friggin insects this year. i kinda looks like i slacked, but i assure you i have not. the bugs just drop out of the trees, or get carried on the breeze and right on through the “air cover” mesh. or hell, they hitch rides on the dogs when they chase each other thru. i KNOW i’m going to fight bugs each year and i’ve been pretty confident in my experience and abilities. they put me to task this year, and on some of the plants found me wanting… they f^cked up my yard and everyone else’s this year.
i’m already trying to figure out what i’m going to do next year if they ignore my “nuke mix” and refuse to die/go away like they did this year.
i went and got some jars this morning and started trimming acapulco gold. it’s still a little wet, but will dry nicely in and out of the jars.
stopped by the grow shop on the way home and had a good conversation with the grow dude about the spidermites this year. he said he had similar issues outside (glad to know it wasn’t just me!). started discussing DIY techniquest and some of the products on the shelf.
my biggest concern is using stuff that isn’t going to kill the bees. i LIKE the honeybees in my gardens, so don’t wish to be irresponsible.
i had never considered pyrethrin as it will kill the bees, but he said there is a technique to apply it at dusk when the bees are done for the day. most of the elements should be dried out by morning. i don’t see the honeybees around the ganj much. i’ve never seen bees land on ganj… (have you? has anyone? do they?)
might have to give that stuff a whirl and mix things up next year. i keep reading johnny p’s one and done remedy. might need to give that a whirl as well.
Thinning the herd. Today will be chop day for super lemon haze. Another “mercy” harvest. The bugs got this one pretty good. It needed more time, but i wanted to salvage what i could of the largest colas that were still quite healthy.
smelled skunky and sour during the wash. the wash water was the dirtiest to date. it was tall so caught all sorts of crap from the “upper atmosphere” in the meshhouse. hopefully this stuff works for abuela.
seems some of the top colas may finish up nice. we shall see. a lot looked quite viable and healthy, though the shriveled fans would suggest otherwise. the sugar leaves were nice and lush green after the wash. will see what it tuns up.
on the chopping block today is HSC Humboldt Dream (Blue Dream x PPD). smelled REALLY nice during wash. PPD floral/perfume coming through and other pleasant scents.
Yielded me 4 hangers. smaller yield, but i’m cool with this as i’m almost out of jars again. (this is what happens when you let your plants push the envelope of acceptable size… )
I have been VERY lucky to have had so many consecutive bright sunny days, but this late in the season means mold and the rain approaches. Several days of rain this week in forecast. I’m counting on the sativas to handle the rain as they have handled the bug washing just fine.
The dense indicas on the other hand are a completely different story. They have already shown they will mold just with washing.
The decision was made. Its time. I don’t want to do this for the trim time, but i gotta save what i can now. I know whats going to happen if the rain gets them
i have two left outside. it rained again last night. went outside and checked on purple haze. saw some things i didn’t like. dug deeper into the colas and found botrytis forming.
sigh
was hoping to take this one to mid nov. doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. will have to chop it tomorrow… too busy in trim jail today. (and running out of jars… again. i am NOT growing this big again… lol)
Rained off and on several times today. Will have to chop tomorrow.
Sad to see. Had some MIGHTY top colas.
Just finished trimming black sugar. I had to throw out some more stuff that seemed to rot even after the wash. Bummer. not a lot, but enough to make sadface.
Bugs then mold. Been a challenging season.
Silver lining is trashed tops = less trimming… lol
more rain today. really light right now, so just gotta get out there before the mold spreads (and the heavier rainfall comes). i f^cked up taking pictures today as i just wanted to get out there and get it done and not get completely soaked doing it. i should have taken a before picture. i did not. not much i can do about it now.
regardless, it’s chop day for purple haze. one plant remaining outside. it has resisted going moldy so far. (knocks on wood)
it is raining again, but i can’t wait. botrytis is just going to spread and consume all. the rain isn’t “washing it off” it’s feeding it. i really wanted to go one or two more weeks with this one. i think the rolling stones penned an appropriate tune for this instance.
but i mean… look at it. all this sh^t is new and developed overnight.
it’s not going to slow down. especially with consecutive rain days and soggy thick humidity after the rain storms. it’s doomed if i don’t cut/wash it now.
1/2 pre wash bundle (i left the rest of it in the mesh house like a dumbass dodging the rain - you can see the pile i left behind if you zoom in the first photo. ).
i was completely ambivalent about this strain/plant at the beginning of the season. once again, garden of green placed a star in the garden. i liked the structure when this one took off in earnest veg and started paying attention. beautiful top colas, sturdy structure, AMAZING smell. well done again GOG.
been in trim jail last few days. i have a break today. blue dream still drying. it slowed down with all the rain. that’s cool. it’s real important for abuela’s stash. seems to be one of her favorites.
