TopShelfs trees (Part 4)

Yeah it’ll depend on the plant. Veg will mostly let you know. I thought I had some shorties in the swiss thai nevil 2 and nh21 x mm f2 but they absolutely blew up. Flowered at a foot and had well over a 5ft tall plant. Had to supercrop regardless. I still don’t like 12/12 from seed unless you don’t care about flower amount to sample at all.

Good call, I’ve Never EVER been a fan of this, tried it once and wished I never did it the entire time. Never done it again. That was 14 years ago appx.

I’ve done 12/12 from seed 2x now and it’s always rang true to what your saying. I can see a benefit from it for phenohunting or just running thru a bunch of seeds but for quantity it will always take a bit more time and training

(Shameless plug)

I just started my 2024 outdoors thread and I’d like to invite y’all to please come and join me in what’s prob gonna be a :roller_coaster: year due to climate change challenges!

You can very easily get 2ft tall plants doing 12/12 from seed, and still see 5+footers at the same time. And then you have zero idea on how long any of them flower for because you don’t know when ‘flip’ happened. It can be a slightly quicker way to pheno hunt, but you need a second proper grow with that plant just to figure out those nuances.

I don’t like it for pheno hunting either, I prefer seeing how plants react to all phases when pheno hunting. I even document growth rates, time to flower, pollen drops, resistances etc. so that month of veg is critical to me when pheno hunting as I take every step into account. But that’s just my opinion

I always assume that the flip occurs around week 3 if going 12/12 from seed.

My Jalisco run was 14 days at 24/0, then 12/12 for the remainder. Plants started showing in week 3, so 7-10 days after going to 12/12.

Additionally all my auto runs are 24/0 and they flip themselves around the same time which is why my suspicions before full on testing it out is this time frame.

Seems every year is a rollercoaster outdoors. Don’t go, ya won’t know.

I agree. I usually veg at 24/0 until the plants are mature. 30-60 days when I can clearly identify males/females. I might get impatient towards the end and go to 18/6. Only then do I flip to flower. If they’re too tall to flip at that point, I’ll either hack them back to 4-6 branches or take clones and flip one of those when they’re ready. I almost prefer to do that as the clone will always grow pretty similarly, whereas the seed plant will usually not turn out exactly how the clone will.

I absolutely agree with everything you said, I’ve even only recently thought . Become a fan of the 24:0 for veg. Great minds @HolyAngel I do the same if they get too big too, just chop em back or clone em. Nice

I think you are right, it never looks right? Ever ! Someone should start testing that stuff. EVERYTIME I’ve gotten sick it’s been food with lettuce too

Yep. I’ve done a bunch of side by sides and read a few papers on it and im firmly of the belief that the only difference between 18/6 and 24/0 for veg, is it’s gonna take longer for the plants to mature under 18/6 than they will under 24/0. Literally the power you save by having the light off for 6hrs every night, is going to be spent on that many extra days of veg needed for the plants to hit maturity. I also find the plants seem to get taller with the lights off time compared to always on, but that could also be a light intensity thing  not positive

I’ve always thought this lately too, as my AOG end up 1/2 as tall everytime they get 24/0 and last time I ran two at 18/6 they were pushing my limits.

I love these discussions. I tend to always learn so much just talking with others about our observations. It’s truly a blessing being active in discussions on forums or just reading through others observations
