Tropical greenhouse in Brazil

Hello everybody,

I come to record an outdoor cultivation test in Brazil, with a small greenhouse placed on the roof of a house. It was made with the same structure and materials as the large agricultural greenhouses commonly used here, only smaller.

The size is 60 cm x 40 cm x 100 cm, with 20 mm PVC tubes, covered with 150 micron diffuser agricultural plastic, and the rest covered with mosquito netting.

It was automated with solar energy equipment (chinese). It has a complementary light just to control flowering (10w, with timer), 2 ventilation coolers (exhaust at the top and ventilation at the bottom), and an automatic watering pump.

It has two 4-liter felt pots wrapped with screen aluminum to protect from the sun. The soil is ½ peat ½ perlite with some dolomitic limestone. I use BioBizz fertilizers, and Gorilla pro-mix/microbes. Neem oil on leaves to prevent pests.

On the left is a sativa plant (a cross between my Paraguayan sativa, or prenseed) and on the right an indica plant (generic seed won at the public demonstration Marcha da Maconha, named “Sandino”).

It is a test for a possible larger greenhouse with six plants in 20 liter pots. I am evaluating temperature control and safety with the neighborhood.

The vegetative process was wonderful, with the plants even maintaining their cotyledons until almost the beginning of the flora. However, both turned out to be male. There is a legend that germinating during the cold period generates more males. They were born at the beginning of the Brazilian winter and faced some cold fronts. My experience has always been to have many more females than males, but in this experiment it was the opposite.

Venho registrar um teste de cultivo outdoor no Brasil, com uma miniestufa colocada no telhado de uma casa. Foi feita com a mesma estrutura e materiais das grandes estufas agrícolas comumente utilizadas aqui, só que pequena.

O tamanho é de 60 cm x 40 cm x 100 cm, com tubos de pvc 20 mm, cobertura com plástico agrícola difusor 150 micras, e o resto revestido com tela mosquiteiro.

Ela foi automatizada com equipamentos de energia solar (chineses). Tem uma luz complementar apenas para controlar floração (10w, com timer), 2 coolers de ventilação (exaustão em cima e ventilação embaixo), e bomba de rega automática.

Está com 2 vasos de feltro de 4 litros envoltos com aluminet para proteger do sol. O solo é ½ turfa ½ perlita com um pouco de calcário dolomítico. Utilizo fertilizantes BioBizz, e Gorilla pro-mix/microbes. Óleo neem nas folhas para prevenção de pragas.

À esquerda é uma planta sativa (cruza minha de sativa paraguaia, ou prenseed) e à direita planta índica (semente genérica ganha na manifestação pública Marcha da Maconha, com nome de “Sandino”).

É um teste para uma possível estufa maior com seis plantas em vasos de 20 litros. Estou avaliando o controle de temperatura e a segurança com a vizinhança.

O processo vegetativo foi maravilhoso, com as plantas mantendo até mesmo os cotilédones até quase o início da flora. Contudo, ambas se revelaram macho. Existe uma lenda de que germinar no período de frio gera mais machos. Elas nasceram no início do inverno brasileiro e enfrentaram algumas frentes frias. Minha experiência sempre foi de ter muito mais fêmeas do que macho, mas nesse experimento foi o oposto.

Update. I will not continue with the greenhouse on the roof… A company announced the construction of a building very close to the roof wall. It would be too much exposure. Some neighbors also noticed the movement.

Regarding the heat, the sativa plant (Paraguayan) grew very well, comfortable with direct sunlight all day. The indica plant seems to have suffered more, drying out some of the lower leaves.

I moved to indoors, with a vegetative grow and a flowering grow.

Atualizando. Não darei continuidade à greenhouse no telhado… Uma empresa anunciou a construção de um prédio muito próximo ao muro do telhado. Seria muita exposição. Também alguns visinhos notaram a movimentação.

Em relação ao calor, a planta sativa (paraguaia) cresceu muito bem, confortável com o sol direto o dia todo. A planta índica parece ter sofrido mais, secando algumas folhas inferiores.

Passei ao indoor, com um grow de vegetativo e um de floração.

Eu até que não fiquei chateado, porque confirmou para mim que uma estufa maior, com essa estrutura, materiais e equipamentos solares, funcionaria bem no telhado. Fica como um projeto. Quem sabe um dia seja legalizado.

Agora vou aprender o universo indoor.

The small greenhouse will have a new function. It will be located in this discreet, high outdoor space, surrounded by plants, but which only receives about 1 hour of direct sunlight per day. I have already tested this space, and there is not enough light to produce a good harvest. However, it was possible to keep a flowering male. It produced few pollen sacs, but it was enough to produce many seeds.

So it will be the space to cultivate flowering males, to collect the pollen and inoculate the small branches of the best females. Perhaps in a month and a half some male plants will appear here.

A pequena greenhouse vai ter um nova função. Ficará nesse espaço outdoor discreto, alto, cercado por plantas, mas que recebe apenas cerca de 1 hora por dia de sol direto. Já fiz um teste nesse espaço, e não há luz sufuciente para produzir uma boa colheita. Contudo foi possível manter um macho em floração. Produzia poucos sacos de pólen, mas já foi suficeinte para produzir muitas sementes.

Então será o espaço de cultivar machos em floração, para recolher o pólen e inocular os pequenos ramos das melhores fêmeas. Talvez daqui a um mês e meio já surja alguma planta macho por aqui.

Hello everyone, I’m back.

The small greenhouse is back in action.

It was waiting for regular seeds to receive males, but it didn’t have access to good regular ones, so I’m sticking with feminized ones (Amnésia Haze – “Seis Pés”).

I started growing indoors in two tents (vegetative and flowering), and in this first cycle, I’m learning a lot. I expected to keep three plants in the 90 cm x 50 cm tent, but after pruning twice and opening them into bouquets, only two fit. I moved the third to the small greenhouse as a backup in case there were problems with the two in the tent. With only one hour of direct sunlight, I thought it wouldn’t do very well.

To my surprise, it’s doing very well! The difference is that it matures much slower than the plants in the tent, even though they start flowering on the same day. After a month and a half of flowering, the plants under Samsung 301h LEDs no longer have many new pistils and are heading towards the final growth of their buds, while the plant in the small greenhouse is still only opening its pistils.

The problem is that it has started to give off a very pleasant aroma, but it’s inappropriate for some social situations in the garden where it lives. So, I decided to return to the roof. The smell shouldn’t bother anyone there, and the construction of the building on the back lot, promised for last year, hasn’t started yet. I need to be careful with a neighbor, but I can consider alternative times to go up there. With a small automatic watering system, I can only upload it every three days.

I’m excited because it looks beautiful with one hour of direct sunlight per day, when it’s sunny at that time, and now it can receive at least six hours of direct sunlight and even more light at other times. I only tested the vegetative stage the first time with the mini greenhouse, as I wasn’t interested in males. Now I have to take it with the already started flora and test other aspects.

The original idea was to test the mini greenhouse and then build a large greenhouse for several plants. I’m not really going to take that step. A prototype greenhouse will be the final product. Because this size is quite inconspicuous. Only my trip to the roof draws attention.

Olá pessoal, estou de volta.

A miniestufa agrícola volta à ativa.

Ela ficou aguardando sementes regulares para receber os machos, porém não tive acesso a boas regulares e sigo com feminizadas (Amnésia Haze – “Seis Pés”).

Iniciei o cultivo indoor em duas tendas (vegetativo e floração) e nesse primeiro ciclo estou aprendendo muita coisa. Esperava seguir com 3 plantas na tenda 90 cm x 50 cm mas, com duas podas e abertas em buquê, couberam apenas duas. A terceira desloquei para a miniestufa agrícola para deixá-la como backup caso houvesse problema com as duas da tenda. Com uma hora só de luz direta do sol achei que não iria muito bem para frente.

Para minha surpresa ela está indo muito bem! A diferença é que a maturação está muito mais lenta do que as plantas da tenda, mesmo iniciando a flora no mesmo dia. Com 1 mês e meio de flora, as plantas sob led Samsung 301 h já não estão com muito pistilos novos e estão se encaminhando para a engorda final dos brotos, enquanto que a planta da miniestufa está ainda só com abertura de pistilos.

A questão é que ela começou a exalar um aroma muito gostoso, porém inapropriado para algumas situações sociais no jardim onde ela mora. Com isso decidi retorná-la ao telhado. Porque lá o cheiro não deve incomodar ninguém, e porque a construção do prédio no terreno de trás, prometida para ano passado, ainda não iniciou. Precisarei ter cuidado com uma vizinha, mas posso considerar horários alternativos para subir lá. Com uma pequena rega automática consigo subir a cada 3 dias, apenas.

Me entusiasma porque ela está linda com uma hora de sol direto por dia, isso quando faz sol nesse horário, e agora pode passar a receber pelo menos 6 horas de sol direto e ainda uma claridade maior nas outras horas. Eu conduzir apenas o vegetativo no primeiro teste com a miniestufa, pois foram machos que não me interessavam. Agora devo levar com a flora já iniciada e testar outros aspectos.

A ideia original era fazer o teste com a miniestufa para depois construir uma estufa grande para várias plantas. Esse passo realmente não vou dar. A estufa protótipo vai ser o objeto final mesmo. Porque desse tamanho fica bem pouco visível. Apenas minha ida ao telhado é que chama a atenção.
