If inbreeding starts at F2 than at what stage is it best to cross outbreed? I’ve been told F4 or F5
Depends how diverse the P1 and P2 genes are and how far apart they are geneticly. So its totally dependent on the cultivar. In my experience is around F6 for most cannabis lines. But a backcross will help to inbreed faster for outcrossing. You can test the cross each F line until you are happy with the result.
Would there be any purpose in going beyond F6 other than locking down the genetics very specifically? Do things get better or worse beyond that?
Sure, you could see real life evolution…“this is my GSC f39…see how diff it is from this f6?”
I have a Kona Duckfoot and a Dragon’s Blood Hashplant I actually kind of want to try a long term breeding project with so this doesn’t sound horrible.
Inbreeding depression is not the de facto end game. You can select and use tricks and keep the offspring going in a healthy fashion.
We survived 300,000yrs…breed away guys
Also, last year i read a paper that used modeling of 6M plants i think it was…and they found when you cut clones from certain areas of the plant (top mid, lower) you had diff percentage of guaranteed mutations of significance. I remem 10,000 most vividly. You clone a single plant 10k times you are guaranteed a mutation.
I dont want to discourage you. But remember that duckfoot is a Recessive trait and this makes it hard to cross to for those leafs. I hope you go through with it and just ask questions along the way. You will find you blood duckfoot dragon in the F2s. But you might have to pop alot of F2 seeds.
Years ago, in high school my friend’s dad would drink hot coffee in 100+ weather and I thought he was insane.
His logic was that if he raised his internal body temp closer to the ambient temp it would be a wash and he’d feel cooler.
I’m more comfortable with daily routines and even if it’s crazy hot that 30mins helps me chew through the 16hrs of boring woke life.
No I just meant as pure strains not as a cross!
Thats awesome. Do you want to improve upon the lineage or just open pollinate?
Sometimes that Great Great Granddaughter needs some pollen from her Great Great Grandaddy!
Back crossing or line breeding?
My plan rn is to hand select the first few generations and then make them a nice plot in the Hawaiian sun and keep them alive and breeding and dropping seeds and then a few generations into that, I’ll select some plants from the bed to transplant into individual grows and try and see what’s going on. Probably pick my favorite out of that and pollinate it with the original generation and pollinate a fem from that generation too and start the open pollinate cycle again. You know taking the time to grow a plant for sampling each generation.
That’s what I got planned!
This is something I’m planning for long term, you know. If we’re around in 40-50 years and the environment isn’t absolutely destroyed and the world isn’t ending (and even if it is) that’s when I plan to sample these long term fruits of my labor. Wether that’s smart or not, a lot of people have told me it isn’t. That it’s too much work and commitment for a strain but it’s something I truly in my heart want to do.
Sounds like a fun project. I hope you take action!
Thank you for reminding that taking action is what’s actually important!
I’ve looked for the same book and it really is hard to find! It looks like Wiley is still selling the '99 edition for 200 buckerinos. I wonder if that’s a coincidence
