When do you give up on a germinating seed?

unless there somehow special or rare, for instance real old, less then a week

Survival of the fittest for me.

If they donā€™t pop in 24 to 48 hours they will never make it in my tent, I havenā€™t the space and time for runtsā€¦

But thatā€™s just me.

I normally put them in a paper towel and on a stoneware plate then in a ziploc and set on the cable box in my bedroom so Iā€™m looking at them when I wake up and go to bed so I check on them. Usually have tails in 24 hrs. Except joti gear then itā€™s 2 days to see the first tails. So far his are the only ones that at least one doesnā€™t pop the first 24hrs

I realize this is older but I just went thru this. I dropped 7. Two popped 36 hours later and another a day later. I looked the next day and a fourth looked like a root had started. I put in a rooter. I went to throw them out the next week and the 4th had a root going strong and I broke it. From now one Iā€™ll do as suggested and keep till moldy.

Love it - sooooo true!

Iā€™m getting ready to drop a full pack of beans, any suggestions for awesome sauce?

Iā€™m going to soak in water, then once they crack put in Rapid rooters, and water/feed with the Clonex nutrients solution once I transfer to solo hempy containers.

Ive tried that recently out of laziness, and I didnā€™t need the clones. I got one out of 6 cuttings actually root, the rest end up with the part thatā€™s been submerged just rotting off.

Thatā€™s the luck I had with cuttings in water, rot and no root

Lol all I change the water once in a while, but thatā€™s about it. The last one I did was a sick ph damaged cutting, it took a bit longer but worked.

I cut 4 ugly ones for science

WHat does everyone do with theyre seeds that didnā€™t germ ??

Iā€™ve save a few that I tried germinating relentlessly . A blueberry and a couple others. Did h20&h2o2 soak and then Paper towel for Days on end.

Eventually trying to feel them to see if squishy or crack .

I kept them in a pill bottle now

Asking now because I had done two batches of Hindu Kush I tried germinating. Almost 2 weeks now.

I was just clearing out my space getting ready to throw them out. But I checked them first and ONE GERMED !!

going to grow this one , however the question occured * what to do with the ones that wonā€™t germ*

Are they toast now from being soaked and soaked?
Or jus to stubborn an require patience, and safe to put back into storage to try again a later date??

Cheers! Onwards and upwards!!

I sow straight into my soil.
Then forget how many I sowed.
Makes things really easy and carefree.

I plant straight into promix. I give it 10 days and then I dig down with a toothpick. If I see no signs of life, itā€™s dead.

I soak in either tapwater or water/peroxide mix, let them sit a few days till they either pop and sink or just sink then when they have tails I put them in dirt.

So if they donā€™t germ the first go round just toss them ???

figured Iā€™d hold onto them and try another germ attempt down the road

I say trash them

Sounds like a plan, ever tried Jiffy pellets instead of rapid rooters? Just expand in warm water and they have enough mild fert for sprouts.

I just melted (aka killed beyond hope) 6/7 of the Muppets I just planted from this very even occurring. Iā€™d cooked them before I realized what Iā€™d done.

Anyone have any ideas? The interior of the house is always around 76ā° so itā€™s not like itā€™s cold, do I even need the heating mat?

My current methodā€¦ (optional) items are just for my fun, I donā€™t think they really impact germ rates.

  1. (Optional) Pull seed from fridge. I start them cold like itā€™s a spring thaw.

  2. (Optional) Put seed in shotglass of RO.

  3. (Optional) Put shotglass of RO on top of fluorescent shop light (for warmth) which is suspended about 10" above a workbench. Typically Iā€™ll have other starts underneath so itā€™s a system.

  4. Mix up ProMix + Verm so verm is 50% of the media. Add to small pots of your preference.

4a) (Optional) Water, let sit because promix ph swings for a day or so upon first wetting, though honestly the seedlings wonā€™t care.

  1. Wait for seeds to sink when dunked. This indicates that things are happening.

5a) (Optional) Wait for the taproot to separate the seed shell like a pistachio.

  1. Place seed, on itā€™s side, gently on top of the loose, moist promix+verm. Press her down as if to bop a baby nose with love.

  2. Lightly dust the top of this nestled seed with some fine media, spritz with RO.

  3. (Optional) Place sandwhich ziplock over pot, blow into it after placed on the pot to balloon it. $0.05 mini greenhouse. Get crafty and cut a corner to drop RH from 100% to like, 99% :upside_down_face:

  4. Place under said shop light, on (Optional) heat pad. Really depends on climate.

  5. ***** Just donā€™t let them get bone dry ever ***** Helps if media is just right. Impossible to overwater yet holds moisture. Verm.

  6. Take mini greenhouse off when they are around 3/4" tall and into a veg tent under full normal light. At this point the roots are able to do the lifting, and we want transpiration.

My experience includes growing up in a commercial greenhouse setting. We might accidentally drop seeds and/or purposely chuck seedlings of all varieties during the sowing/transplanting processes. They fall into cracks in the concrete, or between benches onto the landscaping fabric. They too germinate and grow pretty well. Literally discarded and hoped not to grow, still powers through. We can add as much as we want to it.
