I just noticed this post. Hoverflies? So funny you mention this… I just saw a bunch of them today while I was watering. Glad to know they are beneficial. I had never noticed them before and wondered what in the hell they were. Thanks!
Ya looks like they just float in the air like hummingbirds almost
TIL!
Hoverflies actually have the most flexible wings out of any flying insect, as they twist their wings 45 degrees over 300 times every second. This flexibility in the wing allows it to have an ideal angle of attack throughout the whole up and down stroke, and is ultimately the reason why they can hover .Dec 5, 2012
The ones I saw today were hanging out on my dahlias. Didn’t notice them flying. Once you know, you tend to pay more attention to these things.
Good observation skills are always beneficial to a Gardner sometimes you discover things that work better than conventional wisdom!
So Bruce the practice plant, excuse me, Kaitlin has suddenly went Miss fussy britches. She has wanted more than double her water intake and not because she seems to be guzzling it either. She was limp the other day and got damn near 3 gallons of water. The next day, she was limp again and I stuck my finger in the dirt and it was perfectly moist at the top, so I started thinking maybe I overwatered her. Nope! For some reason she suddenly wants really wet feet and soil. To me the soil felt perfectly watered and she was wilting again after leaving her an extra day to dry out. So, I gave her another 3 gallons of water and she is soaking wet and loving life. Go figure. Maybe she wants extra water while getting ready to bud or the dry nutes in the soil make her thirsty. I don’t know. Honestly, it’s kind of mysterious as she is not even getting close to dried out between waterings.
I wonder if the Bruce phenomenon has to do with the fabric pot she’s in. Maybe she’s rooted out and self pruning in there right now, that may require more water or something. Just a thought.
On to the budding Blue Gelato 41 and Blue Dream, holy moly, I’m betting dollars to donuts that these 2 plants will have the biggest and fattest colas of all of the plants out there. From all the chiropractics and pruning I did, their stems are so thick and strong and I see bud starting all the way up. Man, I hope I can pull this off through harvest to find out. If caterpillars get through they love the densest buds they can bury into. Hopefully blueberry is a strain they don’t like. Crossing my fingers.
Anyone have any good recommendations for vacuum sealers? Dad and I want to start sealing some of last years bud up for longer storage and so we can use all of the food grade buckets it’s in for curing the next harvest. Tips?
My wife got a Food Saver brand unit this spring and she loves it. I’m trying to get the attachment for vacuum sealing Mason jars (goes out of stock within 2 hours of restocking)
Miss fuzzy britches is transpiring to stay cool (if you have a IR thermometer check the leaf temperature vs ambient).
The cloth pots will require more water than plastic and you need to keep the roots cool too. If the pot is dark colored you might need to bag it in an old white tee shirt etc.
Cheers

Normally I would agree with you, except she started this when we had a weird overcast week of only 65 degrees. The heat only kicked back up to high 70s in the last 3 days and the rh has only been 56% I’ve only seen a few of my garden plants transpire, but it was much hotter and more humid. Aside from yesterday at 78 felt like 88 it’s been a mild summer so far. She is in a light gray fabric pot as well.
Actually @Gpaw we have been having weeks of Level 10 UV exposure. The sun rays are literally scorching when the sun is on you, even when it was overcast. Those clouds would break in that cool weather and it felt like you were sizzling. You know those “real feel” things on the weather apps? They’ve been at 10 degrees hotter feeling than the actual temps. Maybe it was transpiring as the UV rays are so strong and dangerous right now. You’ve got me thinking!
The cheezus christ well over 7 feet
The orange goji catching up
Skunk 1 2nd largest
Spectral Tangerine (front) and Bruce getting big in those pots
They look fantastic.
I meant to tell you guys the OG Kush has very few aphids left on it now. I’m comfortable enough with the numbers to let the ladybugs take care of the rest. Whew! I don’t think she’ll need spinosad.
Thanks! They looked so naked to me after the last pruning and now they seem right back to bushy. They are very aired out in the middle though. The Cheese needs to start budding and stop stretching, honestly 10 foot plants are a pain in the ass! I’m good with 6 or 7 feet. I’ve come to realize watching the 2 “Blue” plants start to bud that despite my heavy pruning, I’m gonna have a boatload of bud still.
Now that they are starting to bud, the real trellis test will start. I have a really good feeling about the design. I think they are gonna hold them solid this year!
The pruning did them well it looks like. I can see where they would be a pain in the ass, but seems like a good pain to have. If all the problems in the world we had too much bud, what a great place it would be.
There are a few of us that would trade places with you anytime.
You’ll get there! Last year Dad and I both had to hit the dispensary twice during my grow as I ran out. I grew strictly in pots 3 years ago and it didn’t get us as far. I grew like 20 or 30 autos in succession to make it through until the fall harvest. I don’t have a scale, but I’m thinking I harvested about 15 pounds last year. It’s funny how precious every roach and tiny bud were while we were splitting the little autos before the harvest. Once harvest came, there was bud everywhere, even my dog would drag trampled bud in on her feet. I’d find random buds all over the house, garage and garden and throw them in the trash (the trash! never would have thought). I still find random dried bud from last year. One day, you are hoarding roaches and the next you are throwing out full on buds… growing certainly changes your perspective. lol
Had a long-time buddy over one day, and while we were talking and toking I spotted an old bud on the floor, so I picked it up and threw it away. It had obviously been there unnoticed for quite some time.
He was flabbergasted. He said “why did you throw that away? I would have smoked that!”
“Dude, no. That was on the floor. That’s where my feet go!” I responded. “Besides, I still have like a half dozen jars full, at least.”
He just couldn’t understand.
