Absolute Beginner on a Budget

would it speed things up or help to plant white clover in the amended pot?

ahead of time that is

Not necessary IME. Just in the dark and slightly moist.

Alright; dumb question time. For the first grow I’ll have to use premixed soil. I’m happy to add something to it to make it plant ready; but would like it to be a water only solution. Is there an easy way to bypass the composting time? I’m really looking to germinate this week, maybe as late as next weekend. As it is a budget grow I’m really kinda expecting questionable results anyways, I’d like to keep it organic though.

The plants will first be on a table, under the light. Tent will be up within the first few weeks. I thought putting them in the table might help rather than starting on the floor with no tent. I plan to put them in 2 gal Viagrow fabric pots, as they germinate and will cover with bottles (how long? A week or two?). Now at this point I hope for minimal messing. I can adjust light, water, temp, and rh. I also don’t mind training. If I give myself too much to fiddle with it’ll be a nightmare.

there are different bagged water only soils, I however have not used them. But when you buy that bag it didnt just get bagged up, so how long has it already sat? Sorry they say Im outa luv so I cant like your post today. But I dont see your question as dumb just, like me uninformed

Fox Farm will get you about 4 weeks without adding anything. That will give you time to get things in order or get some free samples of nutrients.

That bumper crop your referring to, is it Coast of Maine’s soil builder? They also have a potting mix under that name. But for the same price, they make Stoneington blend as a water only soil for cannabis use. They say from seed to harvest of soil without adding other ferts (in 15 gallons of soil). One video says if your begging for a month and blooming using just 5 gallons, you’ll need to supplement some feed about half way through bloom.
What if you veg in smaller containers and gradually up pot into super soil for bloom. Then just have the final container be at least 2-3x bigger than the previous. I know that is standard practice for up potting anyway, but it should at least get the plant through the stretch and into bud development with just water.

That’s kinda what I’m thinking. I was afraid of transplant, but honestly I’m not sure I even know enough to be worried.

@Who I guess it just more feels dumb at this point, I’ve spent hours researching and I don’t know a damn thing, lol

Yes it says soil amendment but is just a soil mixture, you can add some more perlite of you please idk what kind mix anyone likes to use but ya IDK about the potting soil? I’ve never used that before.

I mean give a HOY SOIL a try BUT DO NOT FILL THE ENTIRE POT!! Put your hot soil on the bottom of the pot and put your organic mix on top so you don’t just burn the fuck out of the plant and then when the plants big enough it will be ready for that hot soil but anyone I’ve talked to says every HOT mix is TOO HOT!! ORGANIC ORGANIC ORGANIC ORGANIC I can’t stress ithat enough!! A lot more forgiving on your plants and the average grower IS NOT GOING Tonise whatever feet system correctly anyway and you might as well just send that company your in the mail money!

Remember the ONLY WAY to find out what works for you is to try stuff and if it doesn’t WORK YOUR GONNA FIND OUT!! And pay attention to your plant signs/signals!! Water when they need it and not on a set schedule! See what kind of levels of fert the plant likes or doesn’t like, etc… Very easy shit boys!!! If you feed and start to see crispy tips then CLEARLY doesn’t like that amount of food you gave it, flush and cut back. Keep notes or if your illegal take mental notes. I made a ho mix for a new strain in 1 pot last month before going into flower and I’m glad I only did 1 pot because it didn’t like it, even though it’s what I use for flower and I don’tget the burn. Listen I don’t pretend to know all or what I do is 100% correct but it’s what works for me.

What a nightmare- In my hurry and general chaos of late I just now got to looking at the lights I planned on using. One fixture with two bi-pin sockets rated at 80 watts. Well shit, that’s ok for sprouting I guess but I need something bright and cheap soon. I intended to DIY it but I don’t have the time. I found super confusing info on exactly how much light I need, so I’ll just put it this way: How much tent space, and how many plants will this cover. I am struggling to sort out how much light in watts when looking a HPS and LED. Is a Spider Farmer SF-1000 a better option than a 600w HPS? It is a colder environment, and getting colder. It already costs a fair bit to cool the house in the summer though. I’m leaning toward LED for efficiency and small footprint; but I don’t have a frame of reference. I have familiarity with theatrical lighting, and the comparison of LED to incandescent, they often list it as equivalent wattage though. Even if I knew the intensity of the dies, I wouldn’t know how much light the plants need. I’ve read 200-300w per plant, but that sounds like incandescent efficiency. Then again I read somewhere LED wattage is roughly watt for watt the same as HPS. Sooo confused.

TL;DR SL-1000 enough to grow in a 4x4 tent with four plants at flower?

Osmocote. They sell it at every big hardware store. Very cheap.

Nearly complete fertilizer. Just follow the directions and you’ll grow fine plants.

My advice to you is spend some money. It will pay you back and more on your first harvest. The sf1000 is not even close to enough light for a 4x4

My 2x4 LED setup (tent fan everything) cost around $800. My last harvest was over a pound. The math is pretty simple.

I bought my first indoor grow equipment with my first credit card. Gave me tremendous motivation to get a successful harvest the first time haha.

I actually typed “put it on a credit card whatever” but then erased it!

I find the fastest way to learn is to have to lol.

And you’re out of the hole in one harvest. Next harvest upgrade what you can until you have the setup you want. It really is the best investment you can make if you already spend money on weed.

Hell I know some guys who got a buddy to buy the equipment in exchange for the first harvest. Just gotta find someone who believes in you.

Well, you know… fuck it; let’s spin it this way. How much are we really looking at spending on light to accomplish what I need? All I need is a few plants to go to flower, really. I get claustrophobic so we’re trying to keep it to small tents you stand out of or just making a 10x10 grow space that can function as a single room or be partitioned if that makes sense. I can always ask around, but in need to know how much I’m asking. I have realized it will be a while before I’m really prepared to do anything beyond watching plants grow, so in the mean time I just need to free up some budget with quality homegrown meds. For what it’s worth, I don’t care at all if I can’t grow beyond some mids. Nothing too awful, I still have to use the stuff, but as long as it comes out useful; it’ll pay for itself very shortly and I’ll have more capital to push in one direction or another.

This is more a question of genetics and skill rather than gear.

Unless you are using the sun then growing is going to cost you some money.

Find some money. Get a short term part time job and buy some gear. This hobby is very inexpensive. Growing saves me $300 a month because I don’t have to buy any. In the long term it is a good investment. But it is an investment.

I don’t see any kind of setup happening for less than $500

I will have to see what I can do to get started here, but essentially I’m currently disabled and already a heavy load on my family. Trying to minimize it as always, but currently I can’t do a damn thing. I managed to secure $100 a week to help afford dispensary costs until the first crop comes in. This is my life line extended by my grandparents. I’m two generations deep in debt here. At this time it isn’t a hobby; it’s a means to an end. If I can pull out ahead then I can worry about this or that, right now it’s tight.
