Acapulco Gold Repro

The only givens, in growing weed, is there are no givens :v:t4:

Any guesses which one is the sativa?

Herself is loving the Octopup, still stretching, several inches per day and I’m not going to top until I actually run out of headroom.

I learned a useful trick in the process. I’m really fussy about lighting, PPFD and DLI are daily adjustments around here. But this Twiggy-style plant is a real challenge to properly allocate the photons.

I took advantage of the intensity map for my ViparSpectra XS 2000 light to achieve a more even light distribution by physically moving the top of the plant off the centerline “Hotspot” for light intensity.

As I moved the plant away from the center of the light the intensity at the top dropped down to around 600 PPFD. I was then able to crank up the dimmer to bring it back up to a target 900 at the top node.

That dimmer change brought the hotspot area back up to 1200 (at the top) and rained more light all the way down the slope of the “Christmas Tree” shape of AG. The reading down near the lowest branches was an acceptable 600 PPFD, a huge improvement from before the move.

The plant is also sitting on a “Lazy Susan” platter that I rotate manually during the light cycle so the entire bottom of the plant sees good light for at least part of the day. The lower branches seem to be responding and the first pistils are appearing.

I hope that isn’t too wordy/nerdy to be useful. Questions/comments appreciated.

What’s the plan for the tall one? Rainbow? Plant top pulled down to the bucket? Let her go?:grin:she’s got some serious stretch!

My “Tall One” appears to have topped out just as my options to raise the lights are running out. The node spacing at the top tightened and the pistils are sprouting so hopefully the big stretch is over.

At this point I’m reluctant to top or supercrop. She’s a Proud and Majestic Sativa and it would seem like mutilation to humble her. We all get fond of our plants, but this one really has an emotional pull on me. “Long Tall Sally!” There’s somethin special about Sativa…

The situation isn’t optimal since her tippy top would touch the light if I moved her back directly underneath. As it stands, the lower branches are getting the benefit of a photon flood as I rotate the pot during each day. So for the time being, status quo. If she stretches any more I’ll try to squeeze a few more inches of headroom out of the light hangers.

I’ve had to do this before too. Worked well but because of cramped space they ended up with some bleaching on one side but it was fine.

It would probably be ok too if you just pushed the plant off to the side and let the tallest part(s) grow above the light. Looks weird but it’s fine.

Could always tie the top of Long Tall Sally😁 to another bucket and grow that one as a rainbow. Would help branching and increase yield. Of course its fun to let them do their thing too. She is going to start making branches now that her height has slowed or stopped.

I never thought of that. Does the top stay healthy with no light?

I can’t see any visible effects on the apical top after nearly a week “above the light.” The lower buds also look healthy and the close node spacing near the tip of each branch is starting to pack up.

Here’s the top after 4 weeks of 12/12

Here’s lower branch about 4 feet below the light

Yesterday I managed to squeeze almost a foot more headroom jiggering with the light hangers. So the top is getting direct light again.

Gotta say tho that I really don’t like having a light that high up! I put on my Ray Ban sunglasses every time I’m in there and feel like I’m getting a sunburn.

One last note, if you look close you can see a tiny bit of nute burn at the very tip of those slender leaves. Interesting because I’m feeding her with the same “Mid-Flower” GH Trio nutes (at 50% of the recommended strength) as the rest of the room and “Sally” is the only one complaining at all.

Is Acapulco Gold a light feeder?

Yes it does. Maybe doesn’t get as big as it might otherwise but it’s not a big deal.

Take what I say with a grain of salt, but my opinion leans yes.

All of mine preferred drier substrate, and the ones in flower would freak a little (i.e spotty leaf necrosis, and dropped its fan leaves) when I would hit the with something heavy.

But in fairness, I didn’t use bottled nutes so YMMV

My male AG is thriving outdoors and the pollen sacks are on the verge of bursting.

So… I thought I’d try a little pollen chuck using a nice DYI pollen bag idea from @Budderton. The bag is just a tube of seamstress “Pattern Paper,” that my Saintly Spouse suggested. It is taped on both sides of the seam and along the top to make a bag.

(partially completed, needs the top seam taped to complete the bag)

You slip it over a branch and crumple the bottom together to seal it shut, like this.

In a couple of weeks I’ll give it a hearty shake, snip the bag off the stem at the bottom and pour out a nice pile of AG pollen! (or, more likely, cover my dumb ass with gaseous pollen and turn my beautiful Sensi grow into an unintentional seed run!)

In any event, the pollen should be ready about the same time as “Sally” is desperately seeking it so perhaps we’ll have seeds and pollen!

Right on @GrouchyOldMan , that paper looks about perfect. Good luck with your pollinations!:peace_symbol:

Long Tall Sally, an indoor octopup @lambchopedd AG female who I have allowed to grow as tall as she wants, is now 7’6" tall, bumping up against the ample vertical bounds of my grow room.

I’ve resorted to tugging her willful apical bud head out of the main LED photon flow but the lanky rest of her is a challenge! And she is a “big eater,” almost up to a gallon a day of GH Bloom nutes delivered via OctoPup auto watering.

She is making dainty little buds reminiscent of Thai Sticks back in the day. A stem rub produces a pleasant but nondescript fragrance.

2.3 meters and still reaching skyward!

PS, Pollen Chuck is a learning curve experience, not sure what, if any gold dust I’ll end up with…

Pics coming next time.

Greetings AG Folks,

My Acapulco Gold pollen collection was basically a bust due to a rapid and unexpected weather change that took the humidity from 50% to 95% in a few hours. I got soggy clumps instead of Gold Dust! Another rung on the learning curve. sighs

However I did manage to salvage a small pile of AG pollen that I have no use for and if anyone would like it I’d be happy to see it get used.

I reckon this is the best place to offer it up so… First dibs gets the prize!

-Grouchy
PS, This was collected, sieved, dried and sent to the freezer in a parchment packet this week. I have no clue whether this batch is viable or not, only guarantee is that it is Fresh off the plant.

How will this end?

So I have grown out my @lambchopedd AG girl from a weak start to a towering willowy giant. There’s another 12 inches of her top cola above the lights! She likes the micro octopup, drinks a gallon a day of GH Bloom nutes!

Her structure is near perfect geometric precision, Left-Right-Up… March! She really likes to stretch.

image

She’s a lissome beauty, but her flower is a cloud of what look to be larfy marbles! So far, no discernable smell besides generic weed whiff.

After seven weeks of 12/12 she may want another month or two to ripen. Wild and willful sativa lady who will do what she will do when she chooses to do it.

No idea how this will end…
