An Unexpected Earthbox Journey

I asked Pedro the guy who has a video of hashmaking with Jeremy from Build a soil and he says they weren’t as good. Size wise, they would best fit my 2x4 tents , but I guess there’s only one way to find out right :joy:

Love hearing that, I cant wait to get some bins going.

Hmm very interesting and nice to know. I had dumped the EB and EB Jr. from last round and reamended with craft blend. I was unsure if I wanted to try running again in them so I just went for the dump and reamend.

I will really need to wait and judge from the late flower results this round, but I would like to try one no till, 1 how I did last time and 1 with a healthier top load of goodies at the beginning.

Looking nice and juicy over there though so your doing something right! :+1:

That would be pretty cool to see indeed :+1:

Ya it would be great to see some different options, although I think I would DIY something if I really needed something different. Sadly I cant print SIP’s much bigger on my 3d printer and the price would be cheaper DIYing it out of other materials heh.

I just filled up 6 new city pickers today, so good timing! I think there’s pros and cons for each:

City Pickers:
Better fit in a tent
Larger soil capacity (13-15gal vs. Earthbox’s 10ish?)
Less expensive
More wicking locations

Earthbox:
Better shower cap
Arguably better overflow?
A little better casters?
Maybe a little thicker plastic?

The quality isn’t that different, but the design gives the EB the appearance of being stronger cuz it flexes less. Full disclosure, I’ve only handled friends’ Earthboxes in use and cleaning them after a run, never used them a whole run myself.

The shower cap thing is an easy fix. For City Pickers, I cut a 42gal contractor bag in half along the short dimension, then cut the two halves of that apart. There’s your perfectly-sized shower cap to fit under their cloth cap, just gotta fit it to your fill tube and plant hole location.

As for overflow on the City Pickers, I don’t think they’re great, but none of these designs are. They’re all basically fill till u spill, and that sucks inside a house, even if you trust your tent’s “spill tray.” For City Pickers tho, you use Walmart boot trays that are like 30" x 12" or whatever and cost $5 each and fit PERFECTLY between the casters and are easy to install in a 4x4.

The problem with both City Pickers and Earthboxes are small reservoir size. You really need 8-10gal capacity at least, but that is hard to mass produce and even harder to move. DIY is the best option for more res capacity so you can go on vacation.

Hope that helps! SIPs are incredible though. They convert salt growers to organics all the time!

Immensely helpful info! I’ll be curious to see how the grow comes out on the city pickers! Are you in a 4x4 tent? If so, 2 in each tent?

Quick update

Everything is starting to get pretty frosty. That Royal Gorilla just keeps wanting to stack up and up and up.

Still only water down the pipe, no other top dressings other that when they were transplanted into the EB’s.

Looking choice @bassman5420

4x4 tent, and 4 city pickers in each. They fit SO perfectly and the $5 mainstays boot trays from Wally World fit perfectly between the casters underneath them to catch runoff.

Nice tip! I’ve been looking for something to catch the run off so I can vacuum it back up. I thought about getting a 4x4 flood tray, but they’re a good $100 and I’m not sure the City Pickers would fit it in. I like this cheaper option better, I’ll just have to force myself to go to Wally World

The left EB really could have used a topdressing for flower, would be sweet to repeat this grow with more light and food for the plants because this Sunset is so juicy and stanky as is that its not even funny. The pictures do it no justice.

Here is a little clip showing the girls a bit more, Critical Orange Punch on the right has been falling all over itself for a while and I decided to do nothing about it lol… Might prop 1 or 2 of them up tomorrow because one just started to touch the EB today.

Round 2 has come to an end!

Royal Gorilla has a few donkers falling all over the place.

Sunset. So stanky and juicy. This is my type of plant. Grows more goo than biomass unlike the Royal Gorilla

Aaaaand I was in a rush so I completely forgot to get photos of the Critical Orange Punch…

Ooh well…

On to round 3!!!

Yes we shall!!!

An Unexpected Earthbox Journey Round 3 has begun!

Nothing exciting here… Dumped the EB’s out in a tub, added 6 cups of BAS Craft Blend, mixed it up and put it back in the EB’s.

Potted into the EB’s are: (back left) Sunset once again, (back right) Sherbet and (front left) Badazz OG Cheese hoping they will do great in the EB’s and (front right) a clone of my “Geezus” plant.

Time to plop them in and clean them up.

The EB’s needed a little flair. Thankfully I had some epic decals laying around thanks to @chronix :cat2: :evergreen_tree: :green_heart: :evergreen_tree: :cat2: @Pluckyevil threw them on there for me :+1:

Here we go again!

Day 7 in the EB’s

Not near as much growth/recovery as I was hoping, but there are still some signs of life.

I decided to load up the first top dressing. I layered 1/2 cup of Craft Blend, compost and worms from my fathers house, another 1/2 cup of Craft Blend and then a layer of Kashi Blend and ground up malted barley.

Watered in with the usual starter blast I have been using of: Aloe, coconut, rootwise, agsil, cytoplus, fish shit and quillaja powder.

I will let this stew for a bit and see how it goes. Really want to fill them with water but the soil was super wet when I put it in there and after watering the topdressing in, I don’t want to smother them too much. I may turn the light up since they are just starting to perk up a bit, not wanting to upset them but I am really needing to get things flipping ASAP.

@BeagleZ @CrunchBerries I hear you guys putting LABs into the res on these, but I am curious why in the res and not top watered in? I guess I just assumed it would be best used on top.

Crunch can prob answer better but my understanding is bacterial dominant in the bottom and fungal dominant on top. Party in the middle
Think it just to keep the bacteria in the good guy category
