EarthBox vs. RainScience Bag

I have been growing in a few different containers to try different things for comparison. I tried an EarthBox Junior, and was happy with the results so far. For comparison the EarthBox Junior is half the capacity of the original.

This was the Jack I put in the junior on October 2nd

Here it is last night. It is 4 weeks into flower

I decided to test the EarthBox Original against a RainScience grow bag. I amended 20 gallons of soil. The box and the bag are both 7-gallon size. The EarthBox has a 2 gallon water reservoir. Each plant will be given the exact same thing throughout the grow.

The participants are a pair of Hawaiian Haze clones. Both are 12 inches tall and have very similar structure.

The EarthBox Original

The RainScience Bag

They are in a Vivosun 4 x 4, under a HLG 550r.

I will be noting ease of use and maintenance. Growth rate. Yield and quality. Initial observation is the box takes up twice the space as the bag. So depending on your reason for growing, that could end it for a lot of people.

Looking forward to this comparison! Iā€™m running City Pickerā€™s right now which are similar to the Earthboxes, maybe a little cheaper, not sure how cheap the ā€˜lightā€™ version is. So far Iā€™ve been really impressed with the growth, especially once the roots hit the water reservoir! You get an explosion of growth! Are you top dressing your boxes?

Iā€™ll be sitting over here in the corner, tagging along :upside_down_face:

Iā€™ll be curious what you think of the rain science bags. I have used several of their products, and I have mixed feelings. :v:

I top dressed the Junior 2 weeks prior to flower. Last night I just topped it with ewc. I do add cal/mag and other organics through the water reservoir.

@PlantShepherd I have been growing in their bags for about 8 months. I have 5, 7 and 10 gallon bags. I agree about the mixed feelings. I feel they are definitely better than the felt pots and plastic pots. Grown in both. I have grown some very nice plants in the bags, but have found it is better to water them with a sprayer, otherwise they spill a lot of water out the sides if the soil is dry, or somewhat dry.

Since I travel a lot for work, trying to find a better alternative, which is easier for a ā€œhelperā€ to maintain in my absence.

Always glad when you are along for the ride @Gpaw

Iā€™ll go ahead and pull up a chair for this grow. Iā€™ve been considering trying an Earthbox for the water reservoir and because Iā€™ve heard good things about SIPs. Iā€™ve also used Rain Science bags.

Iā€™ve noticed some of the same things as others with Rain Science bags and watering. But I also had a couple spares that I threw outdoors last summer to grow some potatoes. Iā€™d recommend a different bag for this purpose. Many of the potatoes growing close to the sides of the pots got way too much sunlight and turned green.

Iā€™m excited to see this comparison. Iā€™m rooting for the earth boxes. I have a couple I have thought about using for an indoor veg run.

I was thinking about trying an earthbox or 2, but would need to think and plan it a bit since I always end up growing myself into a corner lol. Plans change a lot when I get things jammed up.

Iā€™d wager there are more than a few OGā€™ers who fail to plan before starting something new with regard to their growsā€¦whether seeds or something bigger.

What sprayer do you use? Been thinking about that myself since I grow in smart pots and if the soil gets too dry, you waste so much water trying to evenly moisten the soil. Especially on the sides.

I got a 3 gallon from Amazon.

It works great for me. I add a wetting agent to help. I definitely feel like I am saving money since anything added is just not running out pot. Also prevents water waste, and you can reach further back in the tent. You do not always have to move plants.

Using a sprayer is nice. I use a 3.5 gallon chapin sprayer and I use quillaja extract for wetting agent on and off at the moment.

My poor Chapin sprayer hasnā€™t been used in over three weeks since I installed my blumats.

I have been looking at that system since you installed it. I will see what you think after a few months.

Me too, so far it seems to be living up to the hype. It definitely goes through more water than I was when hand watering. The only issue so far is I havenā€™t been adding any extras like aloe, coconut water, neem/kelp teas, and Recharge.

I was wondering about that. Guess you need to break that Chapin outā€¦

You going to do more with top feeding? I thought about trying a drip system on one of the 10 gallon bags.

I did move a Jack into a 10 gallon bag last night too with the extra soil.

No, in theory I added everything the plant needs up front based on a soil test. I should be able to remain water only until harvest. Then Iā€™ll re-test and re-amend based on that test.
