I still use mine for Foliar sprays and the occasional microbe products now that I switched to Blumats.
house plants love the chapin as well, don’t forget them!!
I still topwater twice a week. EBs are known to dry out on the top couple inches and I can add some extra goodies throughout the cycle.
I don’t thinks it so much auto-pilot as it taking the human component out of the equation and letting nature take its course. Does an old growth forest need to be hand watered? This style mimics a natural aquifer or water table. Once the roots hit that, they drink when and how much they want. I look for any opportunity to take me out of the equation.
whoa. thats a really good way to think about it. i think my biggest resistance to it has been me thinking “i have to be able to dial in this hand watering thing, im not really learning if i just have to fill a reservoir” but i like that approach, just mimicking nature. i like that.
I wanted to top water a few more times this round, but having a gnat explosion in the beginning had me put the covers on lockdown and only took a peak under it once this time lol.
Alan Adkisson (Grokashi) explains SIPs and probiotic farming so much better than I can. His podcasts and interviews are a wealth of information and really very inspiring. USING GRO-KASHI – GRO-KASHI
Do you make your own EWC?
he is supposed to be
Sadly not at the moment. I had held off because my daughter was going to start a worm farm for a FFA project, but she has not done all the research I wanted her to so she could build some knowledge on worms.
Soooo I am suffering because she is being lazy… Typical… Lol.
I will be helping, but she needs to put in the work herself first to at least gather info for herself.
Really want to get some bins fired up though, I could really use some good castings on hand.
@BeagleZ Lol ya ole Beagle has heard me rant about it a few times.
Living the Earthbox life & loving the lush foliage. We use a mask and rubber band to keep watering tube covered. Not sure why, just seems right. Air flow and no fliers. Anyone else covering?
We add dead flies to soil/worm bin and don’t see gnats as a negative. Fliers die adding organic material and the larvae add aeration. An infestation in flower would definitely warrant sticky traps, as much as we apprecilove organic material we don’t wanna burn bugs.

I truly believe it was my homemade EWC that stopped them in their tracks. I feed my worms neem and karanja which is a natural pest preventer. Before that, they were thick as London fog.
It’s about day 65ish in flower in my test grow for my shed tent. Once this Field Trip overgrew my smaller tent, I had to get a buddy to help me quickly set up my tent in the shed and move this out there for flower. So it became my test run for my shed. Temps fluctuated more than I wanted but she’s right at the finish line. The shorter plant that you can kinda see is Usefuls DLA5 x Chocolate Diesel.
This is the 3rd or 4th run in this earthbox without removing the soil. Just top dressing some BuildASoil shit, and other than that, nothing. I love the Earthboxes!!
Hempy is where I have been for a long time, same concept.
I switched from organics cause of the slow growth and hempy is both ultra cheap and autopilot like. Also, organics and apartments don’t mix very well ha.
Now I got my own place, with some acreage, I’m jumping back on. Just didn’t want to spend the $ on these earthboxes when SIPS are so cheap to DIY. Going to have to grab one after all these threads. Might do a comparison thread with clones and do Globalbucket vs earthbox vs fabric pot on top of perlite wicking bed.
There is also the City Pickers option. They are cheaper and I think hold more soil. They sell them at Home Depot (US) I think, so you can get them local.
Although it’s worth noting, City pickers are lesser quality than the EB, so I hear. I did look into them and searched Reddit. I wish Earthnox would accommodate their earth boxes for growers and accommodate a larger reservoir, and better fitting boxes.
I was looking at the Root and Veg EBs. They claim 2cu ft of soil capacity and 2 gal reservoir. They are configured more like a traditional pot. In the end, I’ll probably make some diy 7gals.
Ac Infinity just came out with a self watering fabric pot system that looks interesting.
@nube you have used City Pickers. What’s your opinion of the quality vs EBs?
60 for a 4 pack without the fabric pots
Perlite and a silver foil tray used for cooking is my go to route for wicking beds lol
