4-day Winter camping extravaganza a stones throw away from the Canadian border last weekend… fishing was slow but who cares!
I just renewed my pop-up camper plates and it was only $18 and expires on 12.30.22
I’ve not been “camping” since I got out of the Army… 20 some years ago. I’m done with all that.
A bed, A/C, Heat, is good for me…roughing it to me is staying over night on the boat…46’ POST or in my 6 horse Dreamcoach w/ living quarters horse trailer.
Over the pond we love to tour the UK, especially Scotland with fairly relaxed rules for respectful wild campers. Our old German Hymer motorhome takes us in relative luxury all over the place. We go to smaller music festivals (500-1000 bods as opposed to 100’s of thousands…)
Popped over to Holland a couple of times but Amsterdam is not like it was in 1978 when I first went…wow, what wonderful hazy memories. Getting old and serious now as planning to sell the van to pay someone to paint the outside of our old house…
We’ll be back on the road again soon
Under the stars or the back of the car, those camping days have left some scars. When we were young and controlling it all. The ground sheet now requires Tylenol. The days and nights of connection with the wild, a pursuit now only for my child. From now on, I can tell, my camping will be done in a Motel…Cheers
Our first camp outing of this year is 1 month away and it will be at Middle Fork River Forest Preserve.
2 camp. I just spent a butload on new equipment for hammock ultralight camping. I don’t do it near enough.
We have been here since Thursday the 12th. and yesterday was a beautiful day to setup our new canopy screen tent…we will probably need it this wknd. because there’s a chance of rain Sat. & Sun. First camp out of the year…Next month will be Illinois Beach State Park…
Have always wanted to camp out at Tin Cup Pass for the Perseids. This might be a good year with the moon only at 13%. Meteor Showers 2024 - 2025 - American Meteor Society
“I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky!”
I watched the sun rise over the lake from this park the morning of June 26th, 1992. I had attended the Grateful Dead concert at Soldier Field the night before and had taken the biggest dose of LSD in my life. It was a heady experience!
That screen house looks great!
I’m also a fan of the log cabin style of campfire. I pull the top of my grill off and throw it on the logs to cook. Works great for pots and pans too.
JST, I will be using this on our next camp out over our fire pit…I know a hog farmer who’s in Illinois pork producer’s board and sometimes they have to put down some hogs because of broken legs etc… I told him I sure would like a small piglet so I can cook a suckling pig on my new gadget…
Very nice, there you go! No food going to waste! Much easier than a full grown pig at that and probably more juicy and tender too. My buddy did a roast in his back yard, enough food to feed a platoon… Man do I love a good hog roast!
Dude on fleabay sells a wrought iron spit we have been using for years… manual as we dont have electric in camp. Curious how yours works out for ya.
I got a new piece for BBQ in camp late last year, first time for salmon in camp and i loved it. Wanted one for a few years and finally grabbed one…
Well, tomorrow is the big day…we will be camping at Illinois Beach State Park for a few days and the weather will be perfect. It will be in the mid 70’s temperature wise my kind of weather. I will be fly fishing on Lake Michigan and hopefully catch some perch, the last time I fly fished on Lake Michigan I was catching trout at Montrose Harbour… This should be a great time for relaxation… Also by the time we get back home some of our veggies should be ready for harvest.

I will wave at you from the other side of the lake
It’s nice out here but a little too chilly to be in the water…it’s 66 degrees out here and gets down to 52 at night, definitely wont be using the air conditioning at all.
Didn’t know they had a resort here…
The only Piggly Wiggly in Illinois so I was told, I know there are lot down south…
Don’t know what kind of birds these are…looks like Blue Herons but they’re not blue
That looks like a crane from what I can see. Can’t remember what it would be being red. I forget what Sandhill Crane’s bade color is.
How do you fly fish for perch? Do you just wade fish in the lake? Are you using nymphs for bait and getting it down deep. I’m still learning to fish for perch. I never thought of fly fishing for them. Never heard of anyone doing it.
The weather looks like here today. Went from 90’s to 52 this morning and only getting to 71 for the high today. 90’s again tomorrow!
I never fly fished for Perch but I have fished for them in Montrose Harbor in Chicago …you wanna know what I use as bait for Perch? I use fresh shrimp, I would buy 5-10 of them and cut it up in small pieces and put them on my hook…
In fly fishing they have top surface baits/flys or sinking baits/flys…
