Backyard soil rejuvenation project

New type of Cosmo flowering

So the happiest response to the liquid fish foliar so far is my rose bushes. They loved it! Even the wisteria liked it (so far) go figure. Iā€™m gonna need to mix up a small batch for the roses in the front of the house. I ran out yesterday and didnā€™t feel like figuring out the dosage for a new smaller batch. Got lazy. I am completely blown away by how much water the darn Ranunculus plants want. I did a deep watering in there yesterday and they wanted more today. Between the papavers and those there is a whole lot of foliage in one area of that planter. They may be all a little too close together, maybe they are all just fighting for it either that or itā€™s just cuz they are flowering. They were not that thirsty before. Iā€™ve never seen a zinnia actually flower before this. It opens then keeps growing more petals. Interesting. Usually they form them all inside the bud before opening. I see what looks like flowers starting in a couple of my taller lilies. At least I think they are. Canā€™t wait for those!! The dahlia flower is taking forever, but they get huge flowers, I guess perfection takes time.

California put another Japanese Beetle Trap on my front lawn again today. They did this last year too. At the time I thought they were crazy cuz Iā€™d never seen any then last summer I saw a whole 3 of them and killed one. This year Iā€™ve been pulling grub worms out of the dirt like crazy. Not now but when I shoveled the whole veggie plot. I find them here and there still and throw in the trash. I should probably call the phone number and tell them of my findings, maybe they have an insecticide suggestion or they will come spray my yard (yeah right).

Just read that chamomile tea can be used to prevent seedlings from damping off. Interesting! Unfortunately, I didnā€™t harvest the flowers off the plant I potted because it looked pretty. Now itā€™s gonna die off. I need to figure out where to plant more as I really wanted to harvest flowers and dry them for Glen and my housekeeper for tea. Maybe I can put some seeds in between the cantaloupe and birdhouse gourds. I have cilantro between the tomatoes and they seem to really like it there. Bugs donā€™t like it either, they donā€™t touch it.

Zinnias are cool. I planted them here last year. They were a little slow to take but once they did, wow, beautiful bushy and bright flowers. I never thought they were going to last year because we were in a drought and I put them in late. I bought them at our farmers market a little late but they went till freezing I think.

Iā€™m hoping they all come back up from seed this year, Iā€™ve heard they can. Marigolds. too. Man, they were popping new plants all over when the flowers drop. Iā€™m hoping they will all com back wild, but weā€™ll seeā€¦ not so sure. but I may at least get a few. Iā€™ll plant more regardless. I loved them.I was a little surprised how they fill in and take offā€¦ eventually, lol. 18 inches between pantings is about right. Each plant just keeps expanding and getting more flowers.

Best vibes on the battle! peace

Been reading that some seeds require darkness to germinate and some require light. Might be part of the reason some of your seeds are not doing anything.

Specifically, smaller seeds tend to require light and the coats on the seeds might be blocking it

@GMan I planted 3 different types and am really excited to see them when they all flower. I started 2 types early in the greenhouse and they are slowly starting to flower now. The last one I sowed directly and they are still very small. Do you remember if deadheading them made them flower more? I bought 1 zinnia plant last year from Home Depot that was already flowering. It finished what was already there and died right away.

@DiggySoze yeah, the lavender said to just press it in to the soil which made me think that it needed light to germ. None of those came up. So I tried again, covering the seed lightly and one came through that I accidentally killed watering. These however arenā€™t pelleted seeds. This time I did cover them lightly again and am crossing my fingersā€¦ Guess I should try to look up the impatiens, if they need light to germ then Iā€™ll need to start more with the pellets on top.

oooh, do green onions flower like garlic? Garlic scapes are hands down my favorite vegetable in existence ā€“ like pre-seasoned Green Beans.

so far I donā€™t think so. You see the pic. They look like what you buy in the store, nothing flowering on the top. Mmmā€¦I love garlic scapes! Gonna have to plant some too. If I recall they are later season plants correct? If not then Iā€™m out of room and Iā€™ll have to do it next year. I do have some garlic chives Iā€™m having a bitch of a time sprouting. Crossing my fingers on those!

Oh I guess they will flower, become a perennial in my yard

@anon95954822 just liked something in the beginning post of this project that made me laugh now! It was about me trying to do this project for cheap! Hahahahaha! ROFL!!! Itā€™s safe to say, Iā€™m broke now and thousands of dollars laterā€¦here I am. Canā€™t even cry about it as I had so much fun doing everything!

@Meesh

I am re-reading this thread to give me some motivation for a few things I want to try out when the snow actually melts(getting there with the rain), and trying to pick up a few pointers along the way.

You are certainly committed time-wise, money-wise, and determined, but I think you are setting a good foundation for yourself and it will only get better with time. You should be proud of what you have done so far and are going to doā€¦ It really is a canvas that is up to you how you visualize how you want itā€¦ I do really dig that cinder block wall in your yard thoughā€¦

I think deadheading may helpā€¦ The thing is once they start blooming one flower lasts forever. I never had to thin dead blooms much. I had Marigold up front of them and of course they love it. I had marigolds sprouting all over in late summer. I donā€™t know if they come back from seed or not. I know the Zinnias can, from what the lady I bought them from said. She said she had lots coming back up in last years patch.

I was going to post some funny pics of how pitiful they looked early on and after we started getting out monsoon rains. Man it was night and day. They do need space between them.

My gardener came today. I love when all the leaves and camillia flowers are all raked up, grass is mowed and edged. Makes the backyard really pop. Gonna be a good stroll back there in the morning with my coffee.

Anywho, worked until 9pm. About time I earned some money. Too much playing outside and worrying about bugs. No more garden talk for me tonight cuz Bosch Season 5 is up on Prime! Woot!

Yes, cutting off the fading flowers will keep the zinnias producing blooms all summer long.

I watched the first episode of season 5 last nightā€¦I have to pace myself so it is not over too soon.

MMM green onions! Eatā€™em now!

My first veg garden after moving out on my own was during unemployment(paid) and I grew tomatos, green onions, peppers & potatosā€¦ I made falafels & used tomato, green onion, jack cheese, & sriracha sauce in a pitaā€¦ MMM that was my routine food for some months.

Not as pleasant on the exit! :fire:

My morning stroll in the garden today, Brodaia Rudyā€™s are starting to flower. They must have started growing in January and my gardener accidentally weed whacked them, since they are a bulb I figured they werenā€™t gonna flower. Itā€™s been forever. Canā€™t wait to see how they look. The ranunculus flowers are opening now. One is almost there. I can already tell they are going to be amazing! Iā€™m gonna give them a couple more days then Iā€™ll post a pic for yā€™all so you can see them in all their glory. I am really worried about the bat flower I received. Planted it, but it was the weirdest thing Iā€™ve ever seen, so I just hope I planted it in the right direction. Looked all over the internet for a pic of a cutting like that and couldnā€™t find it. So I just had to guess as it didnā€™t have any roots. Iā€™m gonna need to review my orders for all the plants I bought in the fall as Michigan Bulb guarantees them for a year and some stuff just didnā€™t come up. I either want a refund or new plants as it will probably add up to at least 100 bucks worth.

@cannabissequoia That sounds delish! Too bad I didnā€™t grow any cucumbers, I could have made tsatziki sauce to go with those falafels. Now Iā€™m craving Mediterranean food! Yum!

@Calyxander I did not have as much restraint and marathoned 5 episodes lol

And, itā€™s my birthday, too! How awesome is that. I was talking to @lefthandseeds the other day and it turns out his is too, lol. I had just mentioned out of the blue about something elseā€¦

I think planting on your birthday is in the farmers almanac as right up there with full moons, and stuff like that.

They actually call for after May 25th here for my area, and maybe closer to first week of June because of my extra elevationā€¦ Iā€™m at 6500 feet. So, I have time. But not much.

Iā€™m only doing organic heirloom Purple Cherokee and Large Cherry. The Purple Cherokee were off the charts taste wise imo. They seem to be hard to grow in some areas, but did better than my others here.
