Blueberry F4 - Resinous Males

We all know that a resinous male is hard to find. However, there could be certain lineages which have a higher occurrence.

Are resinous males fairly common in DJ Short’s Blueberry F4? Does anyone have experience with that line here?

Couldn’t say, but I should know soon. Perhaps I’ll have something to report. I will keep an eye on my F4 blueberry plants.

Curious why DJ Short specifies his blueberry lines are F4 or F5? Is he making a point that he actually works these lines vs. the abundance of crosses being made and released without working the lines? Or is it to differentiate this blueberry line from one in the past? Or something entirely different?

Sorry, dont have much to contribute to the resinous male question- it is a good one tho. I’m also curious if there are strains that typically show an abundance of resinous males.

I kind of figured it was because he lost the parents somewhere along the way and that was either the next closest gen he had or hopefully that’s the gen he found plants close to the orginal parents

Just my own high guessing no actual knowledge of what DJ has going on in his lab lol

He works the lines. I do not see F4 available anywhere anymore.

Welcome to Overgrow @DainIronFoot, please keep us updated! I only have seen one F4 male so far…

I have seen these resinous males several times in a cross that I made about ten years ago. It is an
( original Cinderella 99 x Ghost Train Haze #1 ) x Frisian Duck. It is now in the F5 generation and I have seen at least 5 of these resinous males that he talks about. This line has produced at least one of these resinous males in every generation and it appears to be a common trait of this strain. This quote from D J Short.
“(A quick word on “backward” hermaphrodites ? declared males that eventually sport female flowers ? as opposed to the usual female-to-male hermaphrodites. These are semi-rare occurrences, usually sterile but sometimes viable, that I have found at times to be valuable in their genetic contributions. Some of the most resinous and desirable males I have encountered exhibited this trait. This trait almost seems to guarantee against unwanted hermaphroditism in subsequent generations as it also increases the female to male ratio in its progeny.)”

I have found these words to be absolutely true. these males are covered with resin glands. also, all of the females are perfectly normal and do not show any intersex traits. Last year one of these resinous males pollinated himself and made 5 seeds. Three seeds germinated and one has survived. It is a male and also very resinous. This male appears to be completely normal showing only male flowers. I intend to cross him with several other strains and possibly keep him as my own unique breeder male.
I will continue this particular cross into the next generation as well and maybe offer seeds in " breeder packs" of 100 seeds each so that others can search for these resinous males.
