CaliBest420 aka Mark on Strainly

I got some chem 4 from Mark but haven’t grown it out. It was my understanding that this is a clone only strain. I asked him about the provenance and he said he got the clone from a place called Mammoth. Then I asked how he made the seeds and no response. I’m curious about this myself, also curious about his Bubba kush.

I’ve tried to contact him with the same questions about a few of his clone only strains he has in regular seed form. I know the beans are cheap but not listing your out cross leads people to believe they have something pure that isn’t , then they breed with that and spread more mixed genetics and incorrect information and the cycle continues. I saw the bubba kush and the ghost and neither of those have ever been available as regular beans anywhere. I’ve also noticed a lot of people running his bubba kush and calling it that when it’s a cross maybe a back cross if your lucky.

Also been asking him about strain info; nothing but dead air in response. He doesn’t even bother messaging me back to say he doesn’t know… I was just trying to figure out how long a flowering time to expect on one of his “105-day autos,” hoping - perhaps in vain - that this didn’t mean a 15-week flower fast photo. It’s certainly not an auto. It started showing flowers 2-3 days after switching the lights over, at around 70 days from seed. It’s nearing week 8 of flower now, still some clear trichs and no amber… so I may be screwed. :stuck_out_tongue:

That said, it’s got decent size buds, a nice smell without being too overwhelming, good vigor and no intersex traits so far. I probably wouldn’t use it, or any of his seeds, in a serious breeding project since I don’t know what they are, but for newer growers just looking for cheap, decent seeds he’s a good one to go to.

I’ve been hesitant to say anything but why are they being called autos if you have to switch the light

Cause the term “Fast-Photo” isn’t as sellable?

No idea. I’m glad I read this thread before starting them though, I was half expecting them to be fast photos regardless of what he called them and so I wasn’t too disappointed. I’d still like to know how long to expect it to flower, though. I took clones, and it’s very inconvenient to plan around the flowering time of a strain that you don’t have the slightest clue about.

I was just reminded of this thread; following up on my “105-day” Foxtail Lemon Skunk, it took 10.5 weeks in flower and 149 days total to be fully done (30% amber trichs), in case anyone else is running these and finds themselves curious. Not sure if that’s a standard for his work, but it’s not what I would usually think of as fast-flowering either; the full photo Spirit Train F2 that I ran alongside it finished at the same time with more amber. The smoke is pretty good, but not as good as the Spirit Train, which also wins on flavor. The Foxtail does win on one thing, ease of rooting clones. The buds were also much bigger, though not that dense; a surprisingly small yield, only 2 oz from a 4’ tall plant. Overall, not a bad grow, but not an amazing one. The seed was definitely worth the $0.40 I paid for it.

has anyone run mark’s bubba kush? i just threw a couple in paper towels to potentially run this season. i’d love to hear more about it.

I have about 50 seeds of this strain for pheno hunting but didn’t make it yet. Unfortunately I haven’t seen reports on this either.

If I remember correctly a former member called. Dequilo had some pictures of it. Maybe you find then if you search it.

I grew one, but it turned out to be a male… Structurally seemed true to what I’d expect from afghan though.
I have a Afghani#1 in a paper towel from Mark now. Fingers crossed its (F) :peace:

Ended up growing the Chem 4 out.

Harvested end of last October.
Smells sour and cheesy. Very resinous, very sticky, like really tacky. Catapillers claimed the nicest buds :frowning: I don’t know if it’s pure chem 4 as I’ve never grown it or smoked it before.

this guy is just reproducing crappy euro knockoffs of well known strains from california that have marketable name recognition.

It’s all just repros of brands like HSO which are well known for lying about their genetics and shamelessly using the names of well known california based strains to push their subpar product.

None of the strains named after clone onlys are genuine.

His autos haven’t been stabilized, all you’ll get is a photoperiod plant watered down with hemp traits.

The stuff from this breeder is trash if you ask me. The seeds are cheap, but they will just waste your time and space in your grow room.

What really makes this guy an inexcusable parasite on the community is the fact that med patients are buying this guys seeds expecting a quick med harvest from one of their “auto” strains, only to end up with a slow flowering plant and wasting precious time. and when they finally get a harvest, they find it doesn’t have the medicinal qualities that they expected and needed for relief from their pain or illness, because mark lied about the genetics and the name.

Also, people buy these seeds at $1 or less, and just use them as bargaining chips to trade for more valuable genetics. Someone has zero value seeds labeled as girl scout cookies, and people making trades expect to get something of value based on the strain name.

It ends up getting passed around through trades. or worse, they are used to make hybrids which are then passed off as a hybrid of a well known strain.

Hey,
My AF#1 seed didn’t pop. I have more to try but I’m not sure if I plan to yet or not. I’ll let you know!

Thank you for saying it. Someone needed too. The genetics/name game is shady at best these days. It is sad really.

I can still recall the days when names and integrity actually meant something in genetics. Fuck. They still do to me (when I am able to verify them as well as possible).

Disclaimer: I don’t have any experience with this person’s seeds, but when you are hawking “Chem 4” seeds and autoflower seeds that aren’t autoflowering, I don’t need or want to…

There are tons of people that just repeat names from bullshit companies and don’t even care to know if it is legitimate or not and use it in their work. It is sad to see some of OG just eat it up.

@zephyr Thank you for always doing your best to look out for our community! Positive vibes…

there is a general philosophy with spanish breeders that you are buying their “version” of whatever that name represents. they pick some random cut that smells like lemon, is short and somewhat indica (ish) and they slap Chem #4 name on it. lindas is famous for this. i dont have that much of an issue with it as long as you know what youre getting. both mark and lindas are in the $2/seed range so not a huge investment if youre starting out

all that said i grew a ton of lindas “gelato 33”. she was a bushy sativa leaning plant with a perfume terp profile. def not a kush leaning variety. ive also grown the legit pcg slurty3 cut (slurricane x gelato 33). those two plants absolutely do not share a parental line. i like them both but it is incredibly misleading for breeders to play fast and lose with naming conventions. that annoys me
