I agree with the K so far. From what I’ve seen potassium requirements spike in flower and are very small in veg.
This is why I am here. Separate the bro from the grow science! Real glad this community is accepting of academics because I don’t see that everywhere. Everyone assumes im working for Big Ag but I cut my teeth in the organic world
I failed freshman math and graduated with a 1.8 GPA in HS!!! I’ve now got a 4.0 and have received enough scholarships and fellowships to make even the best HS valedictorian jealous!!
Its all about finding what interests and motivates you! I didn’t care in HS, went to culinary school then spent a decade in kitchens before realizing that I would rather write an essay then keep wrecking my back and knees making dirt!
Edit to add: I def am at a Big Ag school, top 5 in the world, but im the blacksheep of our department! I also like the idea of people thinking im Big Ag and then slowly realizing i mean what im saying.
Interesting. I work with LLMs in my day job. I don’t now how those folks set their system prompt up, but if you run ChatGPT and want it to answer the questions well and clearly, one of the top things to do is to start by telling it who it should answer as.
For example, I asked it:
“Answer as if you were a biochemist specializing in cannabis agriculture. Tell me exactly what to do for my plants. I have phosphite fertilizer. My goal is to use it to increase secondary metabolite production in my cannabis plant. How much should I add to a 5 gallon pot of soil containing one cannabis sativa plant in flowering stage.”
ChatGPT 3.5 said:
Phosphite fertilizers can enhance secondary metabolite production in cannabis. For a 5-gallon pot during the flowering stage, start with a diluted solution of phosphite fertilizer. Begin with 1/4 to 1/2 of the recommended dosage on the product label. Monitor the plant’s response over a week, assessing for signs of stress or improvement. Gradually adjust the dosage based on observations, aiming for a balance that promotes optimal growth without causing nutrient toxicity. Regularly test the soil’s pH to ensure it remains within the ideal range for cannabis cultivation.
Me:
I lost the label on my fertilizer. What is the usual dosage for a 5 gallon pot?
ChatGPT:
In the absence of specific product information, a general guideline for phosphite fertilizer in a 5-gallon pot during the flowering stage is to start with a diluted solution of around 1 to 1.5 teaspoons per gallon of water. Begin with the lower end of the range to avoid potential nutrient stress, and observe the plant’s response over a week. Adjust the dosage gradually based on the plant’s condition, aiming for a balance that supports healthy growth without causing any signs of nutrient excess or deficiency. Regularly monitor the soil pH and overall plant health for optimal results.
So to answer your original question, CannaGPT is not well built, but the potential for a highly useful tool is indeed there.
However, if I were pursuing this I would start with Anthropic’s Claude LLM instead. It has a larger context window, and had been doing better at sticking to facts.
Even ChatGPT 4 will do better, but I only have that on my work account, and don’t feel like signing in to my laptop right now.
Lol! I’ve worked the whole spectrum, from kennel care and landscaping to schoolteacher & now the mildly technical side of computers. Its just sh** to learn, like anything else. If you ever want dirt digging to be just a hobby, I’m confident you could put the hours in and you’d get it. Anybody smart enough to grow cannabis well has enough brains for computers. Those of us from other fields often have excellent new insights too.
Most days I don’t even wear my big girl pants, because no one on the computer can tell I’m still in my pajamas or my grubby garden jeans.
Also @ThePotanist you might be amused to know, I don’t have a HS diploma either. I did get a college one, but washed out of the sciences because on the 3rd try at the algebra & trigonometry class I scraped out a D. My brains just aren’t in math.
And in case tone didn’t come across well - I’m trying to say, be nicer to yourself & that I’m less of a bainiac than it seems, and I think digging in the dirt is worthwhile too.
Re-edit - you’re not at Michigan State are you? That’s where I went because I wanted to be a botanist.
First…let me rephrase my post to LLM is big girl science. Humblest of apologies 🤦
I’m not surprised at all! I graduated high school with a sub 2 GPA and to this day am convinced the teachers just didn’t want another year of dealing with me.
I can comfortably say their jaws drop when they hear what I’m doing now.
Id argue that coding and LLMs are certainly math, they just aren’t traditional math. 21st century math maybe?
I am NOT at Michigan State but I know quite a few people who went there. I happen to work with them and most are bug nerds. I have met a few of the current faculty at MSU a few times also, Dr. Lowry and his monkey flower work is really cool! If you were at MSU around 2015-2017 we may have a common friend!!
Lol! You might be right about your teachers. Having been behind the scenes I’d expect a good version of the convo to go something like “having him around is a PITA, he doesn’t want to be here anymore, and isn’t trying so more time here isn’t going to help. He knows all the basic sh**, just give him the diploma and let him go get started on life.”
The part of coding I like is like the logic and puzzles part of math. But I only code a little. Mostly my job is to support coders.
I’ve run out of likes for a bit, so this will have to suffice
I hope you hit the nail on the head with your assessment! I have been known to question authority a little bit. But no more than is healthy for a person
Thank you kindly for your assessment.
Those seem like very helpful tips and I will give this another shot.
I see now that I need better input.
I think that is what @sfzombie13 said too.
I guess I just don’t have the knack for computer communication …LOL
The authority will pivot. The Cannabis authorities have all pivoted. Every time they get pressured, it’s pivot time. Constantly running from critique.
I hope to see lots of bullshit bro science come out of chat gpt. I’ve been seeding Google with bullshit for 7 years now.
It’s hilarious. AI is gonna tell all the lame ass fake skunk breeders in California to cross a cheese strain with a Chem because I seeded Google with “3 methyl butanoic acid is the precursor to Skunkweed” (actually 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol and potheads aren’t even remotely familiar with 6th grade chemistry so they’ll never figure it out, and will hopefully waste half a much of their time that the community has caused me to waste.)
Your point about them repeating bullcrap is one of the biggest issues.
The LLMs are, at a basic level, just completing responses based on probabilities. You can even dial in the level to which they will conform to the most expected response based on the data they were trained on. That can help you either avoid or seek out less common answers, and so long as the incorrect information is in the minority, that can work. One of the problems with “bro science” though, is that it’s often the most commonly repeated information.
That’s part of what my directive to it to “answer as if you were a biochemist specializing in cannabis agriculture” is meant to combat. What the LLM then appears to do is weight its inputs, and make its response based on data that was labeled as academic, or from a chemist, or a cannabis agriculture specialist. So even if there are heaps of forum posts and blogs and Quora answers out there claiming a bro science answer, if the LLM finds a couple scientific papers published suggesting a different answer then it will give that answer instead.
Don’t get me wrong here, the system is still vulnerable, and it’s just a tool. I find it pretty horrifying actually that people would try to rely on it for info right now, without confirming. That’s because I’ll see answers that are 95% or even 99% correct, and the little piece that isn’t correct can be really smoothly inserted and sometimes appallingly wrong.
You could even ask it specifically for the bro-science answers. You could also ask for alternate hypothesese and views to be included, or for a synopsis of flip-flopping viewpoints over time.
Also, your last paragraph comes off to me as really mean-spirited. Sounds like you’ve had some bad experiences and are spewing vengeance indiscriminately about where it may, for example, hurt innocent yet ignorant East Coast potheads.
You’re in charge of your own life of course, and can do as you wish. I simply feel the need to be clear that me engaging in the interesting part of the discussion with you doesn’t mean I think it’s okay to diss on folks who don’t understand 6th grade chemistry.
All tools need some training and guidance before they can be used efficiently.
Also consider that perhaps computer intelligence is not always the most approriate tool.
When it comes to working with organic life forms, observation and recognizing patterns go a long way.
I’ve learned most from simply watching my plants grow and react to changes, and keeping things as simple as possible.
Hello, I am the creator of Canna-GPT. It was released on 4/20/23 and it has been used by over 500k people and has handled over 2 million queries.
I have read this thread with great interest and I take everyone’s feedback very seriously.
Like all LLM’s, we source our data from other sources of data. So it is important that our data is of the highest quality, much like the cannabis we enjoy.
Over the next 30 days, our team will be upgrading Canna-GPT to increase its functionality and dataset. A ton of data has been released since April, and we desperately need an update.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or comments.
