To me, the thing that makes breeding valuable is selection on the breederā€™s part. If they donā€™t work their lines to later filial generations or produce backcrosses (i.e. they only/mostly produce F1s), youā€™d hope they at least do some selection of the F1 progeny and incorporate them into later strains.

Youā€™re still basically buying into a pheno hunt but at least theyā€™re not just selling repros/crosses of strains others didnā€™t breed. Thatā€™s the kind of stuff you can do at home (people on this forum do it all the time!)

Sup @Sqwee,
I am in AZ too!
And after our cat got bit, and the ensuing vet bill, I now also kill those that are too close to the house. But come across many more out in the mountains climbing.
Have you ever run into a Green Mojave? They are the only ones I would describe as mean, and territorial! Most rattlers are happy to get away from you, and leave you alone, even when you come within inches before spotting them. But the one time we ran into a Green Mojave our dog alerted us to it by barking, and (he?) seriously slithered out of the bushes and charged me. And I was belaying, so connected to a rope, and thus could only move so farā€¦

Itā€™s so funny when I give my cats treats. Ghost big chonking grey boy will take them gently from my hand taking care not to bite me. Mao on the other hand will try to eat my hand when I give her one.

Whats up @Dirtron!

There seem to be a lot of fellow AZ growers on these forums, Iā€™m about an hour south of Phoenix.

Iā€™ve never come across a Green Mojave but from what Iā€™m reading theyā€™re one of the most aggressive rattlesnakes and also one of the most toxic. That sounds like a serious pucker factor scenario!

The only venomous snakes Iā€™ve come across so far are Western Diamondbacks and Prairie Rattlesnakes. The Prairie Rattlesnakes let you know theyā€™re there and posture up to strike a lot quicker, these Diamondbacks are scary quiet and just want to be left alone like you said, Iā€™ve had my face within inches of them twice now and luckily havenā€™t been bit.

It makes me feel like shit to kill them and I only do it when theyā€™re hanging out near the doors of the house because I donā€™t think my little dogs would survive a bite like my pit mix did. I donā€™t mind them for the most part and leave them be if theyā€™re somewhere on the property where my dogs donā€™t go.

Iā€™ve been wondering how many, if any, have ever just had to create a cross primarily because you saw the names of two strains that, together, made for an AWESOME name that had to exist.
Assuming both strains are worthy of using of course.

I bought two mid-size bags this year, about 100 pieces overallā€¦ Iā€™d like to need more, but last year nobody showed up at all. Not sure whatā€™s going to happen this year, but I rarely need more than a few hundred pieces on a good year. I guess Iā€™m supposed to strew the yard with inflatable decorations or skeletons in robes though, to signal that Iā€™m in the Halloween spirit and spend more money before Christmas rolls around and the new decoration contest begins. :stuck_out_tongue: Iā€™d probably get more trick-or-treaters that way, oh well.

The OP in this thread shows my setup. We have a pretty good turnout every year with last year being the only one we have ever missed. Fuck You Covid. Now this year is going to be fun. I always get around 900 to 1000 chocolate bars, never want to run short. At the end of the night there is always some stragglers who did not get out till late and donā€™t have much due to so many people being closed up by than. Those kids usually just get the bowl we use to hold the stuff in dumped into their bags  Nothing like making up for 3 hours of walking at 1 house.
