Cold Weather

We’re about to get another 4-6 inches tomorrow. We’ll have 3 days of highs in the low 30’s F and lows in the low teens, but we go right back to 40’s and 50’s again after those 3 days. I love this type of winter. Mostly sunny days and if the wind isn’t blowing it’s nice. We still have snow on the ground from previous snows which is better than the last few years. The psycho wind blew so hard every day that the snow would just get blown away and left us dry as a bone and it was really cold. So far this has been the perfect winter.

I’m in southern Maine, right on the coast. Luckily the ocean actually keeps us a bit warmer then even a few more miles inland. But that said, I go inland for my ice fishing and just deal with it hehe.

Our lake is frozen over pretty much fully now. I’ve never done any ice fishing before and wish I knew someone here to go with. I was down there yesterday just enjoying the sun and watched a guy fishing two holes. I wouldn’t know the first thing about it except the rod and bait thing, lol. I know they sell the small ice fishing rod and reels here and auger bits. Hope I get it together to go sometime.

Where about s are you located? Go check out iceshanty.com, you’ll be able to find someone local to show you the ropes, and how to do it safely. It’s not as active since Facebook and IG groups kinda took off, but still a better community.

Try the stoner method and use a tip-up:

You can put up a tent and party until the flag pops up.

You folks want to know what winter can be like just ask @Tappy!!

Nothing more ‘bracing’ than watching the snow go sideways at -40 at Portage and Main in Winterpeg!

Cheers

There is a high altitude valley about 80 miles from here and it’s a natural “sink”. It’s the San Luis Valley and South Park which is higher. Since it’s a natural “bowl” with mountains surrounding it, the super cold air sinks down to the valley floors and becomes stuck there when a temperature inversion happens. The warm air overrode the cold air, keeping it in place for weeks.

It’s already hit -50 at Antero Reservoir just recently. That valley is surrounded by 14,000’ mountains. That’s more like 130 miles from me. All that is going on while I’m enjoying mild 40s and 50s and low 20s at night. Weird stuff.

This was New Brunswick Canada exactly 1 week ago .
This was actually pretty mild compared to what we usually get.

There will be lots more before it is done, although we’ve been pretty lucky this was the first actual snow and temps have been pretty mild still.

I’ve only worked in snow one time in ri, it will never happen again I don’t care how much money they throw at me. Turned down 55/hr not long ago for work in south Dakota. The -50 weather forecasts were convincing enough I didn’t need the money. I’d thick real hard before saying no at 3x that lol
