Cool Runnings

Bugbee’s videos are amazingly accessible and informative.
We should name some weed after him! I’d think he’d get a kick out of that. :+1:

Time for an update.

I have been holding the Team back from flower a little to get the Sour Strawberries caught up.
They are a gorgeous little plant, I’m quite enamored with them. Well, so far I’ve removed 2 (males) and have 2 left that are undeclared… :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers:

So far, I have 5 out of 7 clones popping roots.

…enough yakking…

Yup, it’s time! :call_me_hand:
I started to transition the lights of flower (1/2 hr/day), time to get this into high gear.

Do you always do slow transition instead of flipping or is it more to facilitate what you wrote before (Strawberry catching up)?

I’m always trying something a little different just to see the results.
I did a slow transition on the last grow (instead of just a big change) and the plants seemed to respond to it. Nothing big, just ‘no pause’.
So, I’ll do it again and watch their reactions. Next time maybe I’ll try 1 hour jumps.

Yeah, I know… Guess who’s retired with too much time on his hands… :+1:

A lot of paradigms were getting busted back then.
It was a time of flux, so many things started changing, cultural perspectives hadn’t been formed on these developments. That fostered a sense of freedom and boundless horizons. Time to smoke a bowl and reflect.

Notes on improving tent humidity in a dry environment

The following are a collection on notes and ideas on actually managing my VPD environment. Yeah, I’m stepping up my game…
Interjected with miscellaneous mental flotsam and jetsam   :+1:

Tested a Vicks humidifier (hot water boiler, 450W)
Using a hot water humidifier can boost tent humidity by about 10~12%
configuration: Humidifier external to the tent and vapour being pulled in through Velcro flap.
Only works when the exhaust fan is on. Run 1/2 hr every couple hours.
Conclusion: energy hog, inefficient, only works when exhausting air. :-1:

Original idea

3 gallon cloth pots in 14” saucers and bottom watering helps tent humidity significantly (15%?). :+1:
*(use 12” next time)

Running the 5.5” square pots in 1020 trays helps significantly – don’t drown them!
(keeping a little water in the bottom of the tray for evaporation – auto water)
Running the ambient temperature higher (75=> 79F) increases transpiration. Thanks @Mr.Sparkle!! :+1:

Lights are 16/8 and 355W (Veg)

Current set points on controller (AC Infinity controller)

high temperature trigger = 79F
high RH trigger = 63%
high temperature alarm = 83F
high RH alarm = 68%
fan = 2

These numbers are based on the following notes.

I have forgotten who posted the Dimluxlighting link but I owe you! I’ve been having a ball with it.

Review of the data presented in the interactive VPD tables from Dimluxlighting.com

Reviewing the table (table set to delta T = 0F):
*(At lights out, the Tleaf = Tamb and the lowest night Temperature observed so far is 68F.)

Good RH range
early veg = 70%~75%
late veg/early flower = 60%
late flower = 50%~45%

Assuming a delta of 3F for lights-on condition and day temperature is 79F (table set to delta = 3F):
(assuming the plants are not dehydrated)

*(a temperature delta of 3F is reasonable based on multiple tests. Range: 0 to 5F) 0 = dehydrated

Good RH range
early veg = 70%~75%
late veg/early flower = 60%~65%
late flower = 50%

*Late flower should be as low RH as possible at night to avoid bud rot.
*Use lights-off, late flower RH as set-point

Ambient conditions
outside temperature = +20F
outside RH = 68%

Lung room
inside temperature = 72F
inside RH = 35%
(normal household functions are adding about 25%)

Running these numbers through Lenntech.Com calculator says I need to add 0.03 litres of water the air in order to bring the tent up to 75%, but this does not include air changeovers.

The emerging strategy is:

Run the exhaust fan as little as possible.
This keeps the humidity in the tent longer & this means higher RH. Good news is I can run the exhaust and control system on 4 watts – amazing.
{This is a delicate balancing act but using the alarm set points as the safety net makes it goof proof.}

*When temperature is the controlling parameter the RH is falling, time to water. Auto water setup would really help dial this in.
*daily bottom watering currently about 8 litres or 2 gallons/day.
(could calc. that backwards to air-changes/day)

RH is the sole control at night (temperature is falling)

Temperature is somewhat predominant control in day cycle, 60/40? Varies on water and transpiration cycles.

To Do:

  • Start cycling the light power up flower (485 watts) +25 watts each day inc.
  • Look at simple auto-water system – (have a lead)
  • get 6x 12” mondi saucers

Time for a little update:

I transitioned to 12/12 and the lights are running 475 watts.
lux meter is showing 50K lux at the upper buds.
I’m maintaining about 60% RH at 80F daytime & dropping to 61F night time.
(lung room RH = 35~40%RH)

Getting closer to time to segregate the males

The 2 Sour Strawberries are doing great as well as the CBD in the back corner.
and the Jamaican team is somewhat out of control (they have been a handful!)

On the other front, the clones are doing well and are virtually in stasis. No change since planting. Spray heads on the manifold of the cloner have been adjusted so next run should be better.

Minimal light intensity, 18/6.

The plan is to segregate the males (to the living room), collect their pollen & selectively cross the F/Ms. The Strawberries and CBD will serve as ‘indicators’ as to how well I handle the pollen (ideally they will be without seed)

Looking good my friend. Just killed 3 male yesterday myself. I’m not at that point yet. Hehe…

1st week of flower

The boys (4) have been segregated and exiled to the living room.

The girls have more room to stretch out. Looks like the last undeclared (#55) appears to be a boy in disguise so he will be joining the boys club downstairs. That gives me 5 males and 3 females for a total of 15 crosses.

The Sour Strawberries (front right) are doing great, one has a hint of strawberry plant to it. It will be fun seeing how the odour and stem-rubs progress through flower.

The toughest thing for me is going to be remembering to change my clothes before opening the tent… Maybe some signage will help LOL :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Beautiful work @Gpaw !!

Look at them grow and I like all the purple stems on them !!

Hopefully  you get some nice colors of pink and purple in those lady’s

That is very interesting. I have always wondered if that would have any effect. I have often thought of slowly decreasing light similar to the natural sun for the whole grow. Maybe starting with 18 hours of light and slowly getting to 8-10 hours of light.

Just my stoned brain pondering…
Good day keep up the good work
