Thanks @Badger. I’m excited too. As ng as the thieves leave me alone I should be fine. Man they take a lot of organic ferts. I hope it pays off… I’m sure it will.
As far as no till goes this is my perspective on it. All the people who I know that plants corn and soy beans around here tell me they just do it with there smaller fields because it saves time and they don’t really loose a whole lot but they still do and that’s why they work there big black dirt fields cuz they yield more when they work the ground. But they are using synthetic ferts as well. It’s just a time table basically.
@Tinytuttle I need to hear your opinion on this because growing grain and growing good weed are 2 totally different things. I know synthetic ferts can only be up taken by a certain percentage… I’m just gonna stop cuz to much to…lol
@Gramps I think you were right about the Nitrogen. The plant I’m giving chemical ferts to is green real green. I’m just new to organics. It’s slower. I guess I’ll know for sure when all plants are ready to smoke
Ahh boy @Badger is spot on! Lol Just look at today’s farmland soil profile very little organic matter Probably less than 1% organic composition , continual destruction of the soil profile, destroying of fungal networks , compaction after repeated plowing etc which makes for anaerobic soil layers etc It’s been proven that organic notill methods can outperform traditional farming methods YouTube some of Elaine Inghams work with farmers around the world see is believing!
Iv posted a couple of Gabe browns videos as well
Two different crops yes but really the same in essence the best soil will yield the most in any situation
It just pisses me off every year when deep cut plows turn over clods the size of cinder blocks they are loosing much top soil when the Wind blows it all away
Man I wish I could hear you battle this out with one particular person who I know who I think is a know it all. I’m not gonna dispute you at all brother. Actually I tend to agree with you. When I was a kid my dad would plow under the soil a foot and said it mixes the topsoil with the clay for a better yield
I agree with you @Tinytuttle. If I have the funds I’m gonna place and order for a 12 inch layer of compost on my garden then manure and I would not want to mix that in with the clay
I think it would defeat the purpose of growing bigger plants
The only thing that should be tilling the soils nowadays are earthworms they take organic material right in top and take it down into their burrows they can move an unbelievable amount of soil if you allow them to do so. There’s another point why would anyone want to slice and dice the worm homies and destroy the very tunnels they’ve created to take water way down into the soil ? Gabe B soil is 10% organic material or better by now and he has rich dark soils probably 1.5’ deep so much water can penetrate and stay there in drought like times
Did you see the clip where it rain over 13” in like 24 hours on his farmland and it all soaked in? And not a bit of runoff , his neighbors land was flooded and running off creating more erosion?
I wouldn’t go that overboard but a good six will do! … you at times have to watch out for manures as well some can have salt in them and with time can buildup unless you nowhow your critters are being taken care of.
Correct just right on top !
Not to beat on your dad or anything but that’s your old school typical farmer mentality a lot still do it that way cause that’s how they were taught.
Your clay will start aggregating within months and continue to to get softer every ear and will work deeper each year.
Roflmao! Plus 20
Well stated man.
To sum it up, when top dressing the worms will mix you soil for you, and help to aerate it. This helps the moisture to get down to the roots.
When you work the soil you kill worms and fungi, and allow the soil the pack too tightly. This keep the roots from getting most of the moisture.
Correct?
I knew when I said that tiny would be on his rant.
No I didn’t see that man. But I sure can imagine. I bet his sump pump ran hard.
@Tinytuttle you convinced me enough. I will try your way for two years…
Black Widow.
