Day 5 of quitting smoking cigarettes

That is truly stunning @legalcanada!!
That’s probably enough daily nicotine to kill a regular person!
My F.in L. was 3 packs a day and went ‘cold turkey’ - that was impressive, throw on vape and dip - that’s epic - pushing legendary!! Well Done!
I feel for your COPD sufferer, my sister died of lung and bone cancer and was still smoking right to the end. For some, the hook is just set too deep.

“Habits begin as cobwebs and end up as chains”
-Old Spanish proverb-

@Marcus420
Somehow this ditty became my mantra as I envisioned that chain that enslaved me and focused on it’s weak link.
And visualized myself as a non smoker.
Chains are only as strong as its weakest link.
I can’t tell you what your weak link is as it’s different for everybody.

I picked a Sunday in July, 1983.
Went to the bar that night and closed it down.

Alcohol, coffee, eating, waking up(lol) were my triggers.
My triggers were unavoidable so I had to develop coping mechanisms and rewards to deal with each trigger, brushing your teeth immediately after eating, hitting the snooze button for a few minutes instead of lighting up, etc.
I had quit many times before and used each one as a learning experience to my ultimate goal , freedom from smoking!

By the time that Sunday rolled around I was so sick of smoking I wanted to quit.
And for me that was the key, the weak link was my wanting to smoke.
No habit, no routine, no addiction is as powerful as the power of wanting.

Once I truly learned to want to quit, I quit cold turkey and haven’t had a cigarette, cigar or tobacco in any form since.
Even though I had my coping mechanisms and all my past knowledge at the ready, it didn’t matter, tobacco and I were through.

I sincerely wish the same for you.

i’m sorry to hear for your sister. unfortunately most people i know who have/had lung cancer never smoked :frowning:

i never pictured myself a non-smoker but my mind changed almost overnight. i just decided i don’t want to do this anymore one day and that was it. @spaceman is correct it all comes down to truly not wanting to smoke, because if you want to smoke you’ll find a way, it’s easy to tell yourself just one more pack or one more cigarette etc

vaping is a great smoking cessation tool, but eventually i felt like vaping was worse for my lungs than cigarettes were as i was developing a sort of dry cough i never had while i smoked, like i constantly had to cough something up and it wouldn’t come

what percent or mg of nicotine do you vape?

I quit smoking 6 years ago after smoking for 8. I actually quit smoking through using dipping tobacco but quit that 2 years ago. It’s tough but totally worth it! You are what you eat and those thing are pure filth! Don’t lower yourself and those around you to dirt!

Great proverb and thank you ! I’m wearing myself off the vape … I’m really starting to hate nicotine … Viewing it as evil poison helps …

It really does. It really is an evil little drug. Nicotine is the drug of choice. The delivery method varies. But nicotine is a scam.

You’re doing a great job
Dont give up you’re almost to the promise land

Congrats on quitting man, I was tobacco free for two years but picked it up this last Christmas, I didn’t know how to cope with the stress I was dealing with at the time. I hate how smoking makes me feel. I need to hop on that bandwagon again

Yep and viewing yourself as a nonsmoker doubles down on that.

Most folks believe the worst threat from smoking is getting lung cancer or breast cancer.( Breast cancer has a strong correlation with smoking)
As bad or maybe worse is the twofold damage carbon monoxide does.
CO has an affinity for the hemoglobin in your blood that is 200 X stronger than oxygen(O2)
The tieup can last 12 hours or longer, meaning that red blood cell can’t carry oxygen.
During that time, the red blood cell shrinks and becomes hard then it bangs around your arteries damaging those cells.
Your body tries to repair that damage by patching it up with cholesterol.
Continued smoking ties up more rbc’s causing more damage and cholesterol formation making heart attack and stroke also a major concern.

Plus nicotine constricts your arteries too, the smallest of which are only one rbc wide, and those feed your cartilage.
That blood won’t reach it causing those cells to die.
That’s why smokers often have bad backs and knees.

It is hard man…

I quit 5 years ago now but I STILL crave cigs in certain settings or when doing certain things.

A cig and redbull was like cocaine for me.

Something to consider when having that urge again might be to consider several sessions of hypnosis .
