We got a thread on cobs. Dont worry;)XD

A friend said despite the fact that HPS does use a lot of energy, the return on my investment would be easier to get.

My new grow space will be 15 ft x 20 ft - my garage. So we have very hot summers and really cold winters so insulation and temperature controls are a must. How many 1000w dimmable HPS would you run? How many fans?

A 1000 watt light will cover five feet and fans depend if your lights are air cooled. Your question is how big of a ac do i need and that depends on area and where you live.

I think you can go on an Air Conditioner store online and calculate how many BTUs you need for any determined areaā€¦ Worth a try!

Thereā€™s a formula for that, canā€™t be that hardā€¦

I wouldnt run dimmable but rather switchable ballast. Dimming your hids ruins their lifespan. Better to switch out bulbs. For that space id do 3 or 4 lights on each side with one maybe 2 inline fans and a mini split ac. Go check vaderog on youtube. Youll get some good ideas.

If youre doing this thinking about making money youre gonna fuck it up or grow shitty weed. Grow for your head And people will be begging for your cannabis. Dont worry about money itll come if you do shit right.

Being as though most garages are separate from the home, youā€™ll likely need sub-panel installed by a good electrician. If a 1000w is good for a 5x5, that putā€™s you at 12 lights for the space. You might try and stretch the space a bit and only use 8 lights, but thatā€™s still 8000 watts. Divide that by 240 volts which is 33.3 amps of current being pulled. Thatā€™s a major load to draw, and adequate circuits will be needed. If youā€™re area isnā€™t legal yet, your power company will most likely red flag your account, so be prepared for a situation like that.

I assumed they would be legal but you have a great point. Youll have people knocking on your door real quickXD hahahahaha

Donā€™t forget about EMI too. Letā€™s hope those ballasts have good EMI filters in them.

If you went with cobs you could achieve the same light as a 1000w hps with a fraction of the power. Thatll help save your money and keep the electrical company awayXD

@lotus, do COBs emit EMI to your knowledge?

I dont believe so but dont quote me on it.
