Absolutely man. Pass those on to someone who needs them. I ran into a little extra scratch, so I’m good. I imagine I’ll run that Oaxacan IBL for Fiesta De México. It’s got a 10-week flower time while the Highland Guerrero goes 13-16.
I can’t really find anything about the Vintage Mexican, so I don’t know about it.
It’s an open pollination of old seed from Central and South America. Seed from the 70s I think. While nothing pure will pop out obviously, there should be some interesting possibilities for sure. I don’t know which landraces (exactly) made the old Haze, but I think there should be a couple of the ingredients in these seeds.
I’ve got a small pile of “old mexi” seeds that came in an old black film canister. (I miss those…handy storage).
So, we can pretend I have all of them because I have no idea what they are exactly! I do know that my young friend got one to sprout and grow a few years ago. I saw it. It was very light bright green. He said once it started flowering it smelled like skunk all over his property. So, we’re gonna see. He lost it to freeze before it finished.
@StocktonT, I loved the story. Thanks. Seems like heard something about Christiania before. As far as skunks, most Americans know exactly the smell of a skunk. Just like a skunk’s smell will penetrate about anything so would the early pot that people called skunk or skunk bud.
It was one of the first strains to get a name associated with it for good reason. And, seems like it was one of the first sort of commercial sensi strains at the time. It just faded away as new stuff came around.
I remember the smell and the smiles when someone walked into a room wit a bag in their pocket. My memory is fuzzy other than smoking it a lot.
Great! Let me know if you find anything. I saw an IG post about it, but I can’t find anything specific. Mother’s Finest Seed Co appears to be no more. None of their IG links seem to be working anymore.
You Know a Smoker in Skunk country when they take a big exaggerated inhale of that three day old dead skunk laying in front of the pile of burning car tires beside the road…
I totally get it that people growing up with the animal skunk around know that smell and associate it with some stinky weed. My point though is that the use of the name, even if people have never smelt a real animal skunk, I pretty wide ingrained into popular culture where many people who never had the smell of real skunk would say “it stinks like a skunk”. It’s become some kind of generic term for bad and strong smells even if the smell they tag with skunk isn’t exactly like the animal smell. If you grow a lot of plants you will have a small percentage of them just have a more pungent smell than others. It may be a fruity smell or a bad acrid smell or even a flowery smell but those plants are just heads and shoulders above in smell than other plants. Some of them have while growing and then it kind of fades off a bit when drying and curing while others keep it or it gets more pronounced or changes a bit after harvest. I have had plants that had this penetrating quality to the smell like you couldn’t contain it though it was not always bad or foul smells but usually it had some kind of nastiness to it.
One C99 female had this very pungent aroma and she was the one that made me buy glass jars with rubber packing to keep my weed in. I remember this time when I got a nice bag of her from a friend who had grown it. I put the zip in another zip. Wrapped it in a few plastic grocery bags which I then put in an empty ice cream plastic box and wrapped that in more grocery bags and then wrapped that in clots and put it in a sports bag. I had played golf, kept the weed in my car and when I finished 18 holes and got to the car it just stunk real bad. I went to my parents house to wash some cloths and have a shower. I put this bag in the basement of the house. Went up two floors to have a shower and when I got out of the shower the whole house stunk of this C99 flowers. I hadn’t taken it out just kept it in that bag in the basement. I opened all the windows of the house for hours and I sprayed all sorts of stuff to mask the smell. I went to the super market and got glass jars with rubber packing and put it in them and brought it out to the car. When my dad came home later the first thing he did was sniff in the air and ask me with a frowned look on his face what the fuck that smell was. I remember telling him it was my golf shoes that had been locked in the car for a week and probably molded or something stupid like that and got the hell out, lol. The glass jars are the only thing that can keep it in. Plastic bags or containers did nothing.
I had another plant that I grew myself that stunk pretty bad. It was a C99 x Strawberry Diesel plant and it had a very foul, body odor, dirty gym socks kind of edge to that rotten fruit C99 funk. It stunk when it was growing and everything in my house had this smell attached to it if it wasn’t made out of concrete or steel. Socks I used in the grow room would smell of this after washed twice and they would give the smell off to my shoes so my shoes and everything I put in them would stink of this strange pungent smell. I ran that cut for a long time and during one summer I took clones and didn’t have the space in my grow room to house the cuts so I put them in a wardrobe in my bedroom. I left them for a day and when I came back it was like I had harvested plants and hung them to grow. The clones smelt so strong. It was slightly better after it had been dried and cured but mostly due to the fact that I then kept it in jars with rubber packings.
I had one plant that had a real strange floral smell like fresh tulips and it was really strong. The smell gave me a headache it was so sweet and sticky. It also had that quality that it stuck to everything and I remember sitting at the office during daytime (a totally different place) and a delivery guy came up to me and sniffed the air and asked me what washing fluid I used as he thought it smelt so good. Didn’t smell like weed at all, lucky for me but it was so strong people looked at me strange.
Christiania was a cool place back then. It changed some over the years but in the 90s they had a lot of cool stuff. I liked it better than Amsterdam as it was all in one place. You could basically walk down this one dirt road and see all the stuff they sold, smell it and buy a little of that, some of that and a pice of this other thing. Go sit and roll a few, smoke and if you weren’t all stoned you could go back and get some other things or more of whatever was really nice. Good education to be able to smoke the whole hash rainbow and compare the different old imported hash and you could see a lot f the named varieties and even the old imported flowers from Asia, Africa and South America. In Amsterdam one had to go to different shops and get a few of their varieties and then go to another so you wouldn’t see the whole offering in one short stroll. Nice for a young aspiring stoner to educate the pallet and to compare all those things to each other.
Read those quotes in order. I was laughing my ass off! Only a weed lover would find such a repulsive smell, and then replicate it time and time again! Sounds like you’ve had some Great finds in c99 throughout the years. Next summer I’ll run some for sure. That town you describe sounds wonderful. Is it like that anymore?
Hahaha yea it’s a weird thing but it was kind of like that, not exactly like it. The one I describe above was the C99 x Strawberry Diesel and that SD added a lot of those dirty smells. C99 on it’s own usually have a more fruity to rotten fruit kind of funk. A friend grew another diesel cross once that when he opened the jar in a room it was like “who farted”. It was a G13/OG x ECSD (probably a OG x G13/NL1 to the diesel). We would all laugh when he opened his jar as all the others smelt pretty nice and then out came that foul smell. You’re right though, only stoners can appreciate those smells when it comes in weed form. I had yet another Diesel cross (to an Afghani) that smelt like cooked liver meat. I hate liver meat so I wasn’t all that pleased with that smell, luckily it didn’t taste like it smelt hehe
Ahh, yeah, I’m laughing hard as well. I agree with @StocktonT about “Skunk” as more of a generic term to describe really dank pot. Nobody in those days was really looking for “skunk” but more for “skunky” weed. It was the first time real “stank” weed was grown locally in the early days. Skunk was just the first thing that came to mind when trying to describe the smell and I know some did smell closer to a skunk by I sort of feel like the myth became larger than the reality.
Speaking of really dank stanky weed, I grew a cross from a forum friend of Selene x Pineapple Chunk. It was one the most unique strains I’ve grown and the buds turned out dense with a smell from the jar or smelly socks and something more. But, this stuff was so unique I loved it. It would keep a spark in the bowl for huge amounts of time and would fire right back up. It was choke weed, too. It’s still maybe the dankest strain I ever grew. I need to grow it again. I’ve been thinking about how I never grew anything like it since. I almost started some for summer.
I almost hated the smell but only almost, lol. It was too unique to pass on. It lasted longer than anything else, too. It was so dense. It looked hand manicured but that was natural.
I love the cool stories. Man, that would’ve been so cool to be able to buy so many strains of hash at once. I guess they just shut the town down when laws changed? peace
Ahhhhhh yes. The old fart weed, lol. Great cover for gassy people! Dankest Africa on strainly has one called death breath. Sounds like a winner. He says all sorts of gross smells come out of that one. I just ordered Malawi from him( again…my 1st order didnt make it due to covid-19). Hoping he sends some as freebies.
I may pop some now for the hell of it. It was almost 7 feet tall indoors, lol. But it was wide and very open. Perfect plant. I think I have a few of the Selene f2. It’s supposed to be shorter. I never ran straight Selene.
Hahaha yes you can, household plant. She flowered for a long time but also in a pot, it’s better to stick them right in the ground if you can. So it was limited by that pot basically, but a nice smoke. This was a year ago or more. They were pretty nice ones.
