Sometimes Growers from the tropical areas only include flowering time from when floral development is happening and they don’t include the stretch, which under lights can be 4-8 additional weeks. I’m pretty sure he listed his Malawi flowering time at 12 weeks, and looking at pictures it is definitely a legit Malawi, which flowers( unworked)16-18 weeks. His other stuff is legit too, and may be longer flowering as well. Grab some extra twine just in case lol! With some work the Malawi flowering time could have definitely been dropped but I’m almost positive it was an outdoor strain for him as were most of the other tropicals he had. It is hard to determine the flowering time of sativas when grown outdoors.
Unfortunately he has disappeared. @Guitarzan talked with him much more than me and may have more info.
I typed this a couple days ago…sorry so late…
My point being these may get huge. ( in a 5 gallon they will for sure) may want to flip the lights now…
Ps…Dankest Africa once showed me a picture of a 2.2 lb( one kilo) malawi top bud.
@corey I agree with @Upstate, you need to flower them pretty quick. I have a Columbian Gold that blew up when I put it in a 3 gallon pot. It is against the tent top, and I have about 10 weeks left with it
The ones I put in one gallon pots are tall, but manageable.
Had a friend grow some Malawi. They told her 12 weeks, at week 17 she finally cut it down. In a 3 gallon pot she had to start making it grow horizontally in the tent becuase of it’s size. Really good smoke though.
There’s a fun idea… @corey, you should run these in 30 gallon pots too! Then we can all watch while the plants tear down your walls to find the sunlight they’re missing. It’ll be glorious, as long as you don’t have to pay the repair bill and have a spare house sitting around…
@Upstate@Old-Ron. Thank you very much for the information! Very fascinating I love it. Lights will be flipped today! I’m happy to hear that they look Malawi! I don’t plan on topping now. I haven’t even fertilized them yet and they are growing like they are on steroids!
Thanks for the help and support everyone!

[/quote] if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. They are saying " I’m happy and well fed". Only fertilize if needed. Best way to screw up a grow with heirloom sativas is by adding unwanted fertilizers. They are not used to them. Takes years of breeding to get Sativa plants used to extra food.
I think they look great.
Thanks upstate. I will definitely follow that advice. It’s amazing how a plant can grow like this without fertilizer. Some are darker then others but growing at the same rate. I just flipped them. Timer is changed. 11.5 on 12.5 off.
I think in 20 years, with some breeding, there could be tons of strains out there that yield as well as today’s modern hybrids without using added fertilizer. Just good soil, compost and/or castings. Only then will it truly be a"green" outdoor crop. Saddens me that areas out west are being destroyed by the improper use of fertilizer. The Rivers in N Cali are being hammered.
Damn! Looks like our bud @corey will be in for a treat and a few jobs! And we’ll just enjoy the ride!! Keeping kicking @corey!!! You de man!@! “I see trees of green, huge buds too…!”
These Afghani plants are grown with only manure as fertilizer. Wish I had a picture of them when they are big. Plants will do what they are bred to do😁
Thanks guys! @TokerJayG they do look pretty serrated. I’ll try and get a close when the lights come on here shortly. @Upstate that is fascinating. Doing what they are bred to do is right and very cool! Personally I have never grown anything like this before. I came close with a Mazar I Sharif from RSC this past year and right before flower it literally drowned in rainwater… The plant in the bottom right caught my eye too. I’m excited that the lights have been flipped!
I’m amazed how fast these plants are growing without any fertilizer. I might give them a small dose next watering with a little bit of azomite for trace elements and some silicon. @Upstate the bottom pic is the one we have our eye on and it’s probably the greenest out of all of them.
They are growing like weeds. I gave them a quarter dose of Jacks 111 and a pinch of azomite today. I’ll do this next 2 waterings. They just don’t need much at all… pH is 6.8 and they are starting to stink!
I think these plants are going to probably grow 3 more feet… we have just enough room. These plants have not been topped and will grow natural under vivosons mh DE hid bulb there whole life.
I just switched bulbs. I know i have a tophort hps in now instead of the mh vivoson. This hps has 1/3 more lumens compared to the mh.
The plants seem a little down. I might add an mh next to the hps and see what happens tomorrow. These plants love light!!
