I agree!
Quick response here…
Look for brown spots on the stem and peel back the buds of all the plants as best you can for inspection without damage.
Botrytis starts inside the plant before you can see it on the outside.
Also keep the soil as dry as possible, water 2 times a day if need be, but keep the soil real dry.
Keep humidity low but not super low.
In a tent run the vent fan 24-7.
If possible blow air across the buds gently.
The environment is being kept in check to the best of my abilities but at this time of year temp and humidity fluctuate violently so there’s only so much I can do.
If you can keep your lights on and off temp as close to the same as possible it will stop the RH from jumping up after lights off.
If the trichs are cloudy on the buds and they don’t go amber, I would say they are done and remove those and leave what’s not ready, to finish, and monitor closely, as others have suggested.
I hope they pull through without further problems,
This is what I was going to suggest. It doesn’t look quite done, but you can also try letting it dry in place. It’ll probably be several days without water before it needs to come down while it takes up the rest of the water and starts to use up reserves in the fans.
My first protocol for bud rot is to cut back water, or stop completely if it’s close. Remove affected stems, split dense buds that may be hiding rot and dry anything that’s unaffected on the stem.
I always carefully inspect it, but keep buds with no visible problems.
I agree!
As a general rule…
I think we need to water less at end of life.
Keep the medium dryer.
This helps to prevent bud rot, by limiting transpiration.
Thanks for the input guys. I’ve been at a farm and just noticed the rot before I left.
I’ve done a very close inspection and can’t find any more rot.
I’m going to ride it out and limit the water.
Really I don’t care if I lose a cola or two what I’m concerned about is catastrophic crop failure.
There’s nothing special about the bud that got hit. Which makes my mind wander. Logically, there are buds that should be more at risk (like one touching the tent for example, but it’s fine.)
Oh well. We will see what happens. There’s another plant that now that I’ve looked at it a bit more could be close to done too. I’ll have to check the trichs. The foxtails are still white but the rest has browned off. I’ll have to scope her.
What I’m going to do is chop my MMHs and let them dry for a week. I will grit my teeth and check for rot everyday while limiting water during this time.
Barring any more craziness I think this is the move.
The MMHs will be overdry because I dry in one bathroom and use the other bathroom as a form of humidity control. One fan exhausts them both so I can’t have it both ways.
“Alexa, play off key yodeling music.”
Also increase airflow yea or nay? I can pump up my fan a little but it’s already sucking in and I’m torn between better airflow and potentially moving spores around even more.
I am of the opinion that mold ect. is everywhere.
It is looking for a weak plant to attack.
So I suggest air movement.
Seems counterproductive I know, but with botrytis it seems to start inside the stem and work its way out.
Now I do not know this is true from scientific research, but those are my personal findings.
I have not studied botrytis much.
Inside the bud, outside really, but the inner bud has its own environment.
It can be very humid between the foxtails ect.
If you can move that air between the inner bud, it will work to remove the moisture created by transpiration. AKA the plant sweating moisture.
Also if there is no visible signs of rot/fuzz there should be few spores left circulating in the room/tent.
Could be anything like less air circulation, trapped moisture at the side of a tent, trapped moisture from surroundings of any kind, etc. Probably environmental in that specific area.
So. I’m riding it out. Unfortunately the weather is at its worst for me to do this. When it’s warm and rainy, which it currently is, my humidity spikes. So not only am I riding it out but I’m also forced to live with imperfect conditions.
Hold on tight.
Anyway, I have taken down the Maui Mango Hazes. They were very nice to grow and smell very nice. I got a very short and a very tall pheno. The short one is going in the hash bin and the tall one will be reserved for jars.
A pictorial elegy for the MMH in no particular order. I don’t know how to do the grid so bear with me:
If it is any consolation, most guys I know have told me, when those sativa type start throwing foxtails like that, and the underside looks done they are done.
I have been told they can keep throwing foxtails for a long long time if you let them.
I do not have very much experience with the foxtail-sativa types.
The few I have grown have done just that.
The one I did let grow real long, never quit, but it did get bud rot.
I’m going to scope them and see what’s up but right now the plan is that I’m going to leave them standing for another week (which should make it 12 weeks) until my drying room is empty and then I will make more decisions.
If I get more rot I’ll cut it out. If it gets really bad I will reevaluate my priorities.
Lots of unknowns here but we will get through it with at least something to smoke even if yield is gutted.
Ain’t that the truth. Especially hard when you have so much invested already. I’m hoping that cutting the water will help solve it for you. Transpiration issues are a b**** at the end sometimes.
I’m pleased to report that I see no more rot. I remain vigilant.
I have cut the water back. They are now getting about a cup a day (I’m not measuring) which is very low for plants this size.
I have also cut the feed. I figure there’s enough nutrition to be consumed in leaves I would end up cutting off anyway. For 2 weeks/10 days it shouldn’t matter.
Humidity seems to be (relatively) better, probably by making sure the rootballs remain dry.
Plant 1 was the one that got scoped previously and was mostly clear/cloudy. Pistils have all receded. It is also the one with the excised rotten bud.
Plant 2 still has a way to go. I haven’t scoped her yet because there’s still time but she’s starting to look a little yellow and ugly. Best I can figure is over feeding based on extra water consumption from being right in the middle of the light. It needed to be watered the most often thus got more nutes too. She’s way behind the other 2.
Plant 3 is my favourite. The buds are huge foxtaily and airy. And huge. Did I mention huge?
