FourFour Outdoor - Bodhi, Dynasty, Lemon Tree, etc

I was in the garden at 6 this morning but decided to wait on harvesting. Didn’t feel right. It was dry, which is weird because there’s been dew pretty much every morning, but forecast is showing mixed rainy days and warm sunny days for the rest of the week (i.e. mold city).

Here’s everything that will be chopped tomorrow morning (most likely). I’m too lazy to want to cover anything. I’m not chopping anything super early, but a few could ideally use a few more days. Honestly though, my decision is based on not wanting to deal with the slugs and caterpillars as much as it is the weather forecast. Either way this will be the last photos of these until bud pics / smoke reports. There are lots.

Kush 4 x SSDD f2’s via @Kyumonryu

(#1 left; #2 right; #3 center)

Kush 4 x SSDD #2
I’ve had to cut a couple buds off due to caterpillar damage and mold. Skinny leaves but squat and thick. I’d like a few more days but I don’t think she’ll survive the weather. Sweet funky smells.

Kush 4 x SSDD #3
Skinnier buds than her sisters. Sweet feet funk. My favorite plant of the three. I took cuts of several plants and this is the only one that’s survived my torture chamber (wasn’t really set up to take cuts, but did it for fun in a plywood seed starting cabinet in my greenhouse. Hot temps, stagnant air, etc.). Mostly cloudy trichs, but still some clear here and there, less than 10% amber. Tempted to let her go longer, but I have a cut and can always run her again.

Vintage Blueberry via AK Bean Brains
Totem pole, still has some white pistils but trichomes are pretty much all cloudy. There was some mold on a bud (again, in a hole carved out by a caterpillar). Musty berries. Mid-flower she smelled like blueberry candy, but the berry smells aren’t as pronounced at the moment.

Blue Magoo bx3 f2 (left) via last year’s garden, and Blue Magoo bx3 (right) via Dynasty
The f2 topped herself and formed two heads early on. Almost cut her this morning, she’s ready. Sweet hashy berry smells, finished a week later than her sister. The bx3 (f1) is staying green but has the same smell. Someday I’ll grow more of this… Blue Magoo is a favorite of mine but for some reason I’ve only planted 6 of the bx3’s (f1s and f2s combined) in the last 2 years.

Lezbluerado via Dynasty
Freebie that I grew to get rid of the seeds, then got another freebie pack this summer… which I’m OK with. Nice having seed lines that are recommended for outdoor, which is rare.

Obama Kush x Blue Magoo bx3 aka Obamagoo via Dynasty
This is my favorite plant this year. One, because it’s a cross I made and Two, because it smells of heavenly creamy berries. The Blue Magoo dad smelled floral and like burnt rubber but passed down strong berry smells in the progeny. Obama is kushy and funky but there’s hardly any of that coming through. She could go a little longer, but I already found one mold spot (fuckin’ caterpillars!) and don’t want to risk it. Excited for this one.

The next two I’m on the fence about, we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

They are the mystery ‘Pot Farm’ seeds from potting soil from a commercial outdoor grow. I chopped one last week, two remain. I’d like to know the genetics behind them, they’re nice plants.

Pot Farm #1 via a pot farm
Small foxtail-y buds, lots of frost, real pretty. Hoping it’s not all show. It’s close but could go longer. Not worried about mold or anything at all with her. Fruity, almost grape but not quite smells.

Pot Farm #2
This is my favorite of the three. Nice structure, real open, bigger buds and finished later than the #3, which was chopped last week and looks similar. Grape smells. #3 is more floral. Same thing, I’d feel OK chopping tomorrow but would prefer to go a little longer. We’ll see…

The rest have another week or more to go.

Kush 4 x SSDD #1

She’s sort of a mix between her sisters. Bigger buds than #3, taller and not as squat/dense as #2. Also has 7/9 blade leaves, the others have mostly 5/7. Similar sweet funky smells. Speaking of caterpillars, here’s a little bastard on the bottom of this bud.

Sour Bubba via Humboldt CSI

She’s coming on strong at the end.

PSH #3
Surprised at how long she’s taking. Her mom was harvested end of September last year. The Blue Magoo dad did take a long time to show sex, and there’s African genes (Power Plant) in there. I’m excited for this one too, she’s small enough where I’m not too worried about mold/rot.

JTR f3 or f4, can’t remember via @ix3u
Fun little plant. She’s a little barrel made up of these little sativa-ish buds.

Orange Cherries (Agent Orange x Ms. Universe) via Dynasty

It’s funny to me when plants with lady names are used as the father in a cross (Ms. Universe, Space Queen, Old Mother Ghani, etc.). Orange/cherry smells are starting to come on, which is nice. She had a big moldy area on a bud and stem of a big fan leave, didn’t look like it was from caterpillar damage… Another freebie that I didn’t care much about.

And last but not least…

Chem 91” via a dispensary

Starting to smell ‘chem-y’. My cut of this died, but she’s pregnant with some Dream Beaver seeds that I’m excited about. Seems there are a million Chem '91 crosses out there, but this one is new. I also have Chem 91 s1’s, so I’ll have some kind of reference point (assuming this one is actually Chem 91). The farm the dispensary got if from has been around a while and seems legit, but who knows. Hope it’s good, anyhow, that’s all I really care about.

There’s a yellowjacket ground nest a few feet from the ‘Chem 91’. I haven’t spent much time over there due to that… but I’ve also learned to live in peace with them, move slow and try not to disturb them. I have 3 bad experiences with yellowjacket nests but have formed a truce… Anyways, yesterday I noticed a spider built his web right next to the opening of the nest. I watched him for a while try and catch some bees. He’s pretty bold for getting so close, I imagine he could get fucked up if he grabbed one and the bee buddies decided to swarm him.

Damn that was long. It’s almost harvest time though! The grand finale of 2024 outdoor. Got a few more updates before the smoke reports, needless to say I’ll be busy the next few weeks! Peace & love, thanks for reading if you made it this far.

Love harvest season. Lookin good over there :metal: :sunglasses:

I forgot that they were all kinda “short season” plants, pretty cool.

Interesting how there’s zero branching on that one. Do you know if that was something AK Bean Brains selected for or…? She looks good either way. They all look good! haha.

I’m not familiar with that book, only Tom Robbins thing I’ve read was Even Cowgirls… when I was like eighteen or nineteen. But if a Shady Shaman story has already been written, maybe that idea needs to get canned. I can’t stand it when people bite other people’s stuff haha. Like that Zoolander hand model bit. When I saw that, I was just,”This is from a fucking Seinfeld episode!” haha.

This morning I harvested everything that I said I would yesterday, plus the Pot Farm #1. I almost held off on the K4xSSDD’s and Obamagoo. I left the bottom couple branches on them, the seeds from the Dream Beaver male pollen aren’t quite ready. I pollinated one lower branch, and I left another one just to compare the different harvest times, see if my hunches were right on leaving them for a few more days. I’m happy though, this was a season of chaos and making decisions on the fly, so a successful harvest feels extra good.

Thanks, someday I hope to grow as many plants as you haha.

Speaking of happy accidents… Some of the plants are a little too small, but I really like the smaller size. Part of the appeal of growing outdoor is having giant plants, but they’re harder to monitor for pests/mold/etc., more work to trim, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable having 20 big smelly plants that are taller than my fence out there haha.

Not sure but I think it’s a line he’s just preserved / open pollinated, don’t know about any selection. Might’ve had more side branching if it were grown bigger. I had 2 males, one purple stemmed and one green, so there’s a bit of variation it looks like. I’ll know once I pop the rest of the seeds someday (although I’ll top everything if I do the smaller grows next time).

First overcast day in a long time (rained all night) so I went out and snapped some pics while the lighting is good. I’ve been shaking the plants to remove excess water. Been picking inner leaves and any fans that are touching buds. Getting close on the rest of these!

Kush 4 x SSDD #1 is still standing (sisters are alive in the foreground with their one seeded bud ripening):

Sour Bubba really didn’t seem like much for most of its life (might be the slowness from the Bubba) but now has big buds and a smell:

PSH #3 (Power Plant cross) pistils are finally changing color:

‘Chem 91’ :

Pot Farm #2 has become a favorite. Haven’t found a single caterpillar or spot of PM/mold/botrytis. Great structure for outdoor - real open and a lot of branching. Nice grape/fruity smell. Largest trichome heads out of any of my plants this year. I sampled her sister (#3 plant) in my dynavap and it’s too early to judge the quality of the high, but I smoked (vaped) at 6pm and still felt it when I went to bed around 10. I did a last gasp pollen spray with the Dream Beaver on a lower branch to try and get some seeds. No clone, and again, have no idea what the genetics are:

5 plants left this season… Well, besides these:

Dream Beaver, seeds ripening

Dream Axis, also ripening:

Gabagoo auto’s from @Carty. First time growing autos. 9 out of 10 germinated, 3 died from super hot/dry conditions, and a couple more got eaten by slugs. I started these so late, figured I’d go with a ‘survival of the fittest’ approach. That upper middle one has slug slime on it but no bites. Might have to use that for some anti-slug breeding:

Nangarhar Afghani x Panama Red (Snowhigh) - I was reading through the Snowhigh thread a while back and people were talking about the terrible germ rates, so I planted some freebies I got (after a few hours soaking in kelp water) and 5 out of 5 germinated haha. Four remain:

Trying out a new drying technique this year. I’ve always hung plants/branches, but I’m trying out this drying rack. I bought it for foraging/mushroom picking, but my shed is really cluttered right now and this takes up less space. Rotating buds/branches once daily. Seems good, except some of the buds are getting a little flat/deformed.

I really love how you’ve got these tiny, delicate, “single nug” plants growing. Most people are posting pics of massive outdoor shit and you’ve just got these tiny plants. I love it.

Yeah, that one looks super-intriguing. I like the narrow leaves and all. Too bad you didn’t take a cut, but I get it. Today was the day I was thinking about taking some cuts from my plants, but when I got around to watering, I was just like,”Fuck that… I’ll do it next time…”

That sounds good.

Haha! I’m following that thread, too. Or one of the Snowhigh threads, anyway. Seems like a lot of the people on there can’t get seeds to germ, not too sure what that’s about… Glad they worked out for you, though haha.

Psh 3, assuming I’m reading the labels to photos correct, looks to have a spot of mold?

Girls look great brother!

Ha, that is pretty funny comparing it to most people’s outdoor grows. I’ll be chillin’ while everyone is complaining about trimming and not knowing what to do with all their bud.

I wish I did, but at the same time I’ll pop more seeds next year and get a plant or three that checks those boxes. I’ve never taken clones before this year (and it was a half-ass effort). I’d love to have a little bonsai mom library of the standouts, but I still prefer planting seeds. It would be nice to grow all landraces or something one year, but also have one or two clones growing that will for sure give me good bud.

I did find a few little spots of mold on the Pot Farm #2, so I chopped her this morning. Looks like the last of the good weather is gone. Trichomes are super sandy, makes sense, whatever farm these came from was probably growing for hash/extracts. I need to ask my aunt if she knows the name of that farm…

I am planning to get an indoor setup going but that’ll be a little bit, so I have nowhere to grow these out right now haha. Like I said, I figured those seeds were bunk! Maybe it’ll motivate me to get set up faster.

Thanks man! Yeah I’ve only grown 4-6 plants outside in the past because I’ve always grown them big. I get a good variety this way (which I love) and can make a dent in my seed stash.

Good eye, friend! Yeah I’ve been monitoring that spot for a couple days, it was mold. I had seeds from 3 different phenos, not sure why I chose to plant these ones - the mom was the biggest yielder, but that’s one thing I don’t really care about - it had mold issues (the other two didn’t).

What about next year are you going to take the same approach or tweek it some. You got me thinking i could hide a couple in my backyard amongst the kudzu

You should! Some of my plants you’d never know what they were until you get right up to them. Much easier to hide.

This year was totally unplanned, but I definitely like having more, smaller plants. I’ll do a couple things different next year:

  • A lot of the plants are too small (I’ll get maybe a 1/4 oz. each on the Blue Magoo bx’s and crosses), so I’ll plan to sow anything with Afghani-heavy genes and anything that should stay squat a little earlier

    • I like the size of that Pot Farm #2 above, about the size of a tomato cage
    • I’ll probably do some bigger pheno hunts and keep those smaller. Might even get those seeds going earlier, top them / take a cut and plant the cuttings outside end of June or so
  • I will top everything - with larger plants I’ve pretty much always let them grow naturally. The single spears are cool looking but I’d prefer an oz. minimum per plant

Cool man i have numerous plants that i only get 7 to 10 grams off of that i flip fast. There all single cola too. The good thing is yiu have an idea on there growth and feeding habits for future grows. Better than nothing is what i say. Come back when their all dry

That’s how I feel about it, too haha, is that I’m never really disappointed with anything I grow from seed, so why bother taking cuts? There’ve been a few, though, that I wish I kept around, if for no other reason than to share them with other growers.

Yeah, I’ve done it twice; both times were pretty half-assed haha. The first time, I actually got roots on them, but I threw them all out for some reason, can’t remember why.

Anyway, yeah, if you’re sitting on a bunch of seeds, might as well just keep planting them. That’s the fun (for me), is the not knowing and being surprised every time I start a grow.

Haha, just put them on a windowsill or something.
