hey guys, I ended up getting allot, and I mean, allot of stretch this time around. I realized my night time temps where down into the low 50’s, and lights on where in held within a degree of 74. I do believe this huge temp difference stretched these girls out, bad. So, wired a heater up onto the controller, since it has the ability to control both heat, and a/c. So, 24/7 my temps are now kept at 74, +or - one degree. I figured that should tighten them up. Plus, all the new girls that go in should be kept much more compact.Ill post some pics of these stretched girls. So, what experience do you guys have with rooms kept at same temp, day and night?
That sounds good, but you need to research plant hormones. You need around a ten degree difference between night and day. If you get to around a twenty degree difference you start to have stretch. At the end of flower with twenty degree difference you get more color, it’s at the end so little stretch, but condensation from the temp. difference, so greater risk of mold. I hope this helps.
Yes. But, this is the conclusion I had come to after doing the research…lol Found several articles published on the positive affect of keeping at the same tempature, and also haveing a warmer night, vs day. So, I just implemented it, and it is based off of allot of research on it. If they dont like it, I will of course drop it by 10. I am hoping to hear from somone who has run a cycle keeping it at same temp, or higher at night. From my understanding, it should keep them short and stout.
Good luck! I hope it works for you. It stunted my plants in a bad way,(no growth) when night was warmer and that led to my research. Be sure and let us know how it worked.
I will, ill start taking pics tonight
After your post, maybe I should drop it by 5 degrees to be safe? Not sure now…lol
If this doesn’t work you can read up on blue light to stop stretch. (ie…LED) Also kelp foliar inhibits verticlal stretch and they synthesized the hormone that does it but i can’t remember the hormone. Hydro guys use it to get fat instead of tall plants.
Ha! Ha! I always say to stick to your guns until YOU convince YOURSELF of what is right. I wish to help not confuse.
Hahahaha, ya I probally will stick to it…hahaha I never had a stretch problem before, and its the same genetics I have grown for a couple years, but never had such a huge temp difference, and that was the only thing I could identify as being different…lol Well, I need to wire a controller up seperate if I want to drop 5 degrees at night, or program in a ± 5 on the controller, to give me say 79 for a high end, then cool to 74 with lights on. and at lights off, cool to 69 before heats back to 74. So, still not a swing…er, seperate controller.
when lights are on, ill take some pics, I would like your opinion on it.
Definitely get an adjustable thermostat. It saves money on electric at the worst. Be careful it doesn’t stay off to long if you aren’t supplementing co2. (i don’t use co2) I usually set mine ± 3 but that is not too important, 5 or 7 is an option. I always use 3 out of habit not knowledge.
I have all kinds of pid controllers. Just hate to dedicate dual controller to run a single item. I use inkbird, there only like 16 bucks, and incredibly useful to us…lol
I used gavita master controller for a while but know just use the mechanical 10 $ controller from hydrofarm or sunshine i can’t remember. You might be more tech savy than me. I am a little old school on a lot of environmental concepts, but learning.
I am not tech savy by any account…LOL Why I use them. Literally plug and play, easy programming. Can run both an ac, and heater. You can program the temp spread also. I have found them to be the easiest cheapest temp controller around.
I’ll keep that in mind next time i upgrade. I love easy.
I read the same studies on internode length and day/night temperature swings. you’re supposed to minimize the change in temps to reduce stretch.
But honestly it’s never worked for me. I don’t think any of the studies were done specifically on cannabis. I’ve kept the temps close and the plant stretched exactly the same. I switched from HPS to an LED lamp with double the blue specturm, and even that appears to not make much difference, the sativa plants still stretch and the indicas stay short.
I agree that you want at least a 5 or 10 degree drop from day-night for a healthy garden.
