Appreciate the support, thanks Gad!
Itās easy to forget that Iām comparing my mis-steps and growing pains to othersā shining examples of success. After taking 8 years off I need to re-learn a few things, and learn a lot more that I never picked up during my first go-around
Thanks @seeds2weeds! And earlier up in my log I was very proudly showing off my mistakes Gonna see if I still have some of that olā attitude lying around hereā¦
I definitely gotta chop a few of them when I go in there today. Been putting it off for too long, in denial, etc.
No more waiting, need to cut some off the tops. Had to do it a couple times already for my two largest plants. Itāll be better off in the long run but thereās always a part of me that thinks Iām throwing away some of the work that went into growing those tops
Due you couldnt have said that any better! I feel you 100%. I seen a quote somewhere that said ādont let good be the enemy of greatā or something along those lines so hey just cause it aint the best doesnt mean its the worst.
Hey man you sound just like me! Im an overthinker who spends an unhealthy amount of time overthinking the simplest moves. Do no think about anything besides where youre gonna cut haha or else you will be stressed for no reason.
I sat there for 5 minutes trying to find an excuse to worry about why i shouldnt top the plants. In the middle of that thought i got pissed off at myself and next thing you know everything was topped and manageable now. Sometimes it helps to just get the ball rolling and stop thinking for me anyways. I admire the people who make decisions effortlessly. For me decision making takes a lot of contemplation to the point it makes me koo koo
Alright, thatās enough jibber-jabber about being down on myself. Time to show some good things
Hey @JustANobody both of the Mango HPs are in solo cups for a week+. Theyāve been under 2x T5s since I received them and they want to grow, grow, grow. The taller one is about ready to move up to a bigger container, and to the main LED space soon as thereās room
Mango Hashplants
Corey Heime 2 from @hoss8455 , this baby is ready to give up a few snips and also move to a larger pot. She really took off when I moved her under the LED
CH2
Death Coast clones are a success showing roots now on 2 or 3 out of 5. Previously I tried the lazier method of leaving snips in a cup of water, but the Death Coast does not like that - lost 10+ snips trying it that way and they all damped / limped out
Itās a slower strain to take root, for sure
Death Coast snips (one of these has already been planted in a solo cup)
Also having success cloning White Rhino (forgot to take pics)
About 5 or 6 out of 7 all rooting wonderfully. Quite happy with this esp because the snips I took are teensy tiny, ranging from 2-3ā tall
And weāre 3 for 3 on Alien OG - all of them are planted in solo cups (again, need pics)
Mothership/plant is ready to give up a bunch more snips too might need to find a good home for them
Oh and hey @anon56848724 weāve got success now on both of the strains you sent me! Roots popping on out for one of each Gonna give another update on those in a few days to show off the newest additions to the garden
At this point Iām less of a gardener and more of a cloning machine
Also realizing that my emoji usage coincides with the ratio of THC:caffeine in my system
Q: What is something that can happen when your plants stay rootbound for too long?
A:They can start flowering out of stress instead of staying in veg
Exhibit A: my White Rhino mother plant
She began flowering a couple of weeks ago. Had been in a solo cup for her entire life, about 4-5 months. Zero change in soil. Zero pruning/maintenance done on her roots.
I moved her into a 1/2 gallon pot on/around 9/21. Waiting to see if sheāll re-veg now that the roots can be allowed to grow out
White Rhino mother plant, flowering
So this will be interesting to fix. Ideally I would like to keep small or bonsai moms, similar to how Oldtimer1 showed in his classic guide
Iām thinking I can resolve this by focusing on the roots. They need room to spread. That means they need to be pruned so they can start growing again
These will either be placed into larger pots or Iāll cut the roots smaller & add soil to the bottom of the solo cups
All my rooted White Rhino clones are showing signs of flowering, so those will need to go thru a re-veg period. Also seeing signs of flowering on my single Blue Dream clone even though the mother plant is not showing flowers I can see (although she is still in a solo, so a prime candidate for this stress flowering)
Mother plants to check & manage/maintain:
Blue Dream
GDP
Vortex
Alien OG
Grape Pupil
Fruity Pebbles
All of these have been in solo cups since the same day, about 4-5 months.
Hey @Gadarien im glad i finally pulled the trigger and stopped being scared to chop them down. Its made a huge difference so far and i will definitely be topping more often now that i see its not as bad as i worried
Thanks for the interest @anon56848724, always appreciate you stopping by. And welcome @Flower!
I need to take pics. Some of what Iām seeing makes sense, while other things have me confused.
White Rhino received a trim to remove all obvious signs of flowers. The cola was almost as thick as my thumb, which is about one thumb bigger than I want it to be when the plant is in veg.
I had also taken clones from this WR sometime before my previous update. The clones have also started forming small flowers. Itās interesting. The snips must have been taken when the plant was already telling itself to go into flowering mode, so the clones are starting off in that same way. Hoping the clones will show signs of re-vegging soon.
Got more info on the other plants, but itās late atm
Will be back for more soon
Until then, thanks for stopping by the Lily Pad
I just read through this, your plants are thriving! Youāre finding ways to work within the limits of your environment/equipment, keeping everything way happier for way longer than I think I would have managed (especially having to manually water everything!), and no moisture issues even with the tent packed.
Once you get your plants through harvest, youāre going to be SWIMMING in bud. Youāve got the cloning and vegging down solidly, so youāll have things stable there as you venture off into the next stage of the adventure. And youāve got plenty of clones if something does get messed up!
Welcome to the Pad @C_in_CT! Thank you for the kind words. Wow, youāre really helping me keep things in perspective. Sometimes I see all the amazing flowers people have harvested here and I get so down on myself. Comparing myself to others for not completing my goals. Itās a great reminder that I have a lot of positive things here when I focus on them - and many exciting things to come (as long as I make it happen!)
Iāve checked out your thread too, and Iām impressed by your hydro setup. Thatās always seemed intimidating to me. The closest Iāve done to hydro is growing in straight coco coir, and watering nearly every day with the GH trio. Technically āhydroā but not quite the same dedication as DWC
Thatās why I try to keep extras of anything I donāt want to lose Makes the tent congested like rush hour in Atlanta but it gives me practice & peace of mind
Hoo buddy is that a familiar thing. Growing is one of the few areas I have been able to (eventually) actually make some progress and move forward in a while, so basically every other area of life and also to some extent my grow. itās a process. With health issues, I do what I can and sometimes those goals change as I go.
There was some āmakerā-y youtube video I watched a while ago that was like āIf at first you donāt succeed, adjust your criteria for successā. On the one hand it sounds trite, but on the other hand: itās a super valid point! For some people āsuccessā is harvesting flower. And thatās a valid type! But ābeing able to stuff a tent full while vegging and not getting moldā is also one! And so on.
Your setup is so much more intimidating to me. I do things with my reservoir once a week maaaaybe more, I peek at the plant(s) (probably less than I should), and thatās it.
My main design principle was frontloading as much effort as possible so I donāt have to be able to have effort on demand. Iām also doing like one step up from the easiest possible nutrient regime (and still fucking it up in varying ways each time! ) and just leaving it the same through flower. So Iām doing my own version of a minimum viable product and figure Iāll put more detailed effort in at whatever point it becomes necessary. I tend toward wanting to over-optimize things as early as possible, so this has been an exercise in not doing that.
I donāt know what your garageās environment is like, but my basement is like 45-50% humidity, 64-74 degrees most of the time, and I made a little area on a shelf that has reflective bubble insulation around 3 sides, and plastic trash bags along the front and top, and (combined with the bin o lightly damp hydroton I suppose) itās keeping my rooted clones surprisingly content at around 57% humidity. Theyāre not thriving, because theyāre under a shitty little light at ~50% power, but theyāre surviving! You might be able to create a clone area outside the tent to free up a bit of space. Not sure your wife would like āextra tent and extra extra-tent stuffā, but it might be something to consider!
Ooo I like that! This phrase would be perfect for a wooden sign. We could all put one in our grow spaces
Part of the reason the 2 x 4 āTuba Fortā tent is so congested is that I decided to use 25% of the floor space for a shelving unit. The top shelf is where clones go when theyāre being rooted. Fits a seedling tray & plastic dome perfectly
Lower two shelves for rooted clones & seedlings, and the remainder of the space for vegging. So far itās working decently, and no need for a separate cloning space (Just a need for a separate flowering space, luckily my wife is on board with me using half of the garage)
On second look it seems everything is a lighter shade of green than what Iād like. I did recently give them all pHād water with Epsom salt, but no nutrients. Probably need to give a real feed soon. Havenāt seen those happy āprayer handā leaves in a while. Iāve also been neglecting to check them as often as I should Another reminder to myself why I need to update here more frequently! Because I definitely keep a closer watch on them when I post to the log
Got more to share & update later. Iāll get more pictures soon, especially for the plants that are re-vegging. Plus I have another interesting āLesson Timeā topic that Iāve been researching because of my plantsā¦ something thatās had me āseeing redā for a couple of weeks (and this time itās not my bullish temperament! lol)
Yeah your in-tent shelf is a great solution! I was just thinking if you ever need the vegging room, but youāre handling your tree [by] fort space well.
I look forward to seeing how the revegging is going!
I realized well after the fact that that should have been ātuba treeā and it was going to bother me if I didnāt at least acknowledge it
Looking good man everything looks green! Do you have an eta on the flower tent yet? I was just catching up on the thread and wanted to say whats up! Also dont get down on yourself. I had to toss out my entire outdoor 3 weeks (there abouts) from harvest! Shit happens when your farming.
Hey, thanks for the kind words @OHGrow21666!
Always great to have you drop by the Pad
I saw your posts about the outdoor crop All that wet weather we had in late Sept / early Oct really did a number on those plants. Do you still have the indoor run going?
Been meaning to message you as well. Let me know if I can lend a hand either with cleaning anything up, or with sourcing seeds/snips/clones for a fresh start. In the meantime I also have the quick & dirty on our dispos - over the years Iāve learned a few things to grab when theyāre in stock and even more to avoid
Thanks MOX! Technically itās my āfirst time back,ā and it feels like first time around for a lot of it. Thereās been a lot of knowledge picked up that I didnāt have before. Much more patience, as well - maybe thatās the main difference between now and ten years ago.
This grow is the first time for a lot of things. Indulge me while I list a few. Makes a good exercise in gratitude
First time using good quality genetics instead of bagseed (although that bagseed was still incredible to me at the time, despite being harvested easily 3+ weeks early)
First time using grow lights instead of DIY-ing a janky assortment of CFL bulbs (in my defense, LEDs were lower quality & more expensive at the time - but youāll almost never see a lighting setup worse than the one I first made )
First time having a dedicated grow space instead of impulsively taking up a portion of the bedroom with the grow tent (my wife & I were dating at the time, I have no idea how she was okay with that!)
First time having an exhaust fan and carbon filter to control odor, instead of hoping for the best & praying that my clothes donāt smell like weed when I went to work
First time working with clones, which I now realize Iāve been doing for six months?? Dang time keeps on slippinā, slippinā
First time growing while being part of a likeminded community (Iām talking about you, OG!) instead of going full silence, lone wolf. This has been one of the biggest positive changes for me. Espousing all the reasons why would create a full new post in itself. Just know that the words of encouragement have been huge, and so has being part of this place to see what you all have goinā on
